How to Prune Indeterminate and Determinate Tomatoes for Healthy Yields || Black Gumbo

In this video I’ll show you the difference between determinate and indeterminate tomato plants and how to prune them for maximum growth, health and high yields. If you don’t prune, your tomatoes will grow, but will sprawl, become difficult to manage, and will invite diseases and pests. Pruning promotes earlier and healthier harvests and tidy plants that are easier to care for. I’ll speak about plant anatomy, specifically stems, suckers and leafing branches and will show you how easy it is to care for a young plant so that it will become a prosperous and enjoyable project.

Great video. I had a problem growing tomatoes since I'm in a wheelchair. I found an easy way of growing tomatoes. Here in Puerto Rico most of us have gates and what I did was put a big pot and put 3 tomatoes. As they grow I made them to go over the gate. It was so much easier. I just put my hand over the gate and pick my tomatoes. I didn't let it grow touching the floor and and let it grow. Just had to cut the leave and water it everyday. Gave me tomatoes for a year. I replant the see but this time I put 5 tomatoes. They are growing beautifully. Loved and Subbed.

On a determinate plant, it is nice to pluck the suckers up to at least one foot, sometimes even higher if the bush size is large. If you leave all the sucker in low, then you get a mess of a plant and it can get so thick that much of the plant doesn't get proper sunlight.

I subscribed because you are one of the few people who actually get this right. This really applies to all determinate vs indeterminate plants, cucumbers, beans, etc. BTW, on my indeterminate tomatoes I use a piece of strappiing (1x2x8) for a stake. Plant will grow eight feet tall. Cages are too short unless you make your own out of 8 foot fencing.

I use 3/4 inch PVC irrigation pipe for cages. There are 4 uprights for each cage. I let the main leader and 3 additional leaders (suckers as you call them) grow and trim off all the rest. I tie the main leader and the 3 additional leaders to one of the uprights. Works very well. Most years the plants grow to the top of the cages (which are 6 feet tall) and hang down and reach almost to the ground. I have to give away a lot of tomatoes I get so many of them.
