In this video, I will show you how to prune Verbena bonariensis. These are the basics of how and when to prune it. Right after flowering is the perfect time to do this or you can leave it over winter and prune in spring.

New to growing verbena this year also and I put two plants in pots but wondering about transferring them into the ground, is there a better time to do this? Thank you for explaining how to do this.

Hello!☺️ Thank you for watching and for your comment. Best time for planting/transplanting is usually autumn/spring. It depends on where you live, in colder climates (like UK), verbena dies down over the winter and then resprouts in the spring (or the seedlings start growing). But if you are in a warm climate, it should take replanting relatively well, as long as you don’t have a cold spell or freezing weather.

I just planted my verbena this August and it is mostly flopped over , hanging horizontal . Should I prune those accessory branches now or wait until winter to trim all the way back in hopes of straighter branches . ? Is neem oil something you can use for the powdery mildew?

And sorry, I forgot to mention neem oil. I’ve heard some people use it but I don’t have any experience with it, so can’t 100% guarantee. Hope this helps.☺️

question: My verbena plants are maroon at the base; is this ok? the leaves are prickly and are dying off on the bottom, I am pruning them and think that the plant didn't get enough water and that is why the leaves dried up on the bottom.

Hello Demethress! Thank you for your question. Yes, unfortunately this is lack of water. Verbena is very drought tolerant plant but also only to a certain extent. All you can do is continue what you are already doing and and keep it watered more regularly. Good luck and enjoy your plants😊🌺

@@LuciaBukovaLushspaces Thanks, Lucia. My Verbena plant got overwatered because I was slow to bringing it in when we began to have rather a lot of rain. It became very woody and still is. I brought it indoors. I changed it to a bigger pot, loosening the roots a little and placing the plant in new soil. It began to show signs of new, green leaves. Now, the new leaves have begun to look weak, with little burnt edges. I would be happy to send you a couple of images and to pay for your advice. Do you think you can help?

Hi Mark, no problem, they’re good plants, they will grow. Some people prune them for winter, I like to leave it for the seed heads and structure in the garden. Good luck with your gardening.😊🙌

What part of the world are you in? Does frost not kill verbena?

I live in London. We have quite mild winters. The best thing is to take cuttings just in case or if you live in a colder climate, you can treat it like an annual and sow every year. They’re quite self-seeders as well, which is great!

Hello Marjory. Is it brown as in dead? No new shoots coming through yet? Yours might start growing slightly later being a bit colder. Or perhaps it’s not hardy in your zone? 😊
