One of the stars of the early season flower border is Creeping Phlox. While all the other plants are just peeping their heads out of the cold ground the phlox was dazzling me with a series of pale pinks, mauves and shocking pinks! If you want the best display now is the time to give it a hair cut, so I have put together this short video to give you the ins and outs of pruning your creeping phlox to get the best out of it next Spring.

This has been such a useful video. Yesterday I had started ripping out my phlox as they were going brown and scraggy and I thought they were dying. Today I am going to go and give them all a trim and hopefully they will pick up for flowering next year. N. Lincolnshire UK

Thanks for the pointers, my Phlox is still in bloom and newly planted this year, but I will give them a bit of a trim when they finish flowering.

Your garden is so delightful. Wish mine was this far ahead. The temps have put many plants off. There's always next year!

Ah of course you are having the horrible high temps! We are having a bit of a wet summer. So lots of water for the plants but lots of bugs and pests too :( There are never the perfect conditions :)

I always have to wear gloves because it's so prickly I don't know how you do it without gloves on. I did end up finding the Red one I had asked about earlier in the year (Michigan Bulb Co). I have 3 of them coming in fall and so glad I found them. As you know I will be able to split them in the future and spread them around like you have done.

I haven't been successful yet with taking Phlox cuttings, I will try again this year. I've grown cuttings for Hebe, Hydrangea, Buddleia, Spirea & Lavender. It is very rewarding when they survive and flourish for many years. Most of these are now on my channel header and I made a new Hebe video which shows these cuttings on their journey into big shrubs.

Nice one James. I literally chop a bit off, making sure I get some roots and stick them in the ground and they seem to take no worries 😀

I have tried this beauty many times. It used to grow at my old house, but now where I live it just shrinks and shrinks. Also at this house I have a huge rabbit problem. I cannot pinpoint why this is happening here. But yesterday I bought over $200 of phlox subulata. I am determined to get it growing. Do you have any insights as to why it might shrink?

Fantastic video. What type of shears are you using? Mine are more like pruners and bind up when cutting my plants.
@TheOptimisticGardener
@TheOptimisticGardener Год назад
I use some that have long blades, sort of like scissors. I talk about them in this video - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Bw4yxjSbFCY.html

I just noticed only the top of my plant is green and flowering, the parameter is brown and dead-looking. I planted it last year. Is it okay to prune now? I am on PEI.

I just bought 24 plug plants of creeping phlox, I’ve re potted them into small pots and am going to wait a month or so then plant them in my borders, does that sound correct? Should I be bringing them in at night or will they be ok outside? I assume they won’t flower this year as we’re now in spring? I’m in the UK
@TheOptimisticGardener
@TheOptimisticGardener 3 месяца назад
You could plant them now, no worries, but if you want to be safe and let them grow on a bit, that is cool too 😀

My phlox seems to be dying in the middle, should I give it a hard prune or do you think it’s dying and no chance of reviving?

How do you manage lupins? Here, they are eaten up radically by snakes.
@TheOptimisticGardener
@TheOptimisticGardener 3 месяца назад
Ah well, I could never really grow Lupins when I lived in Cornwall, UK as they were gobbled up by slugs and snails. Here in Nova Scotia they literally grow like weeds, so I actually have to pull some out or they will take over, so I can't really give you any advice!

I've never pruned my phlox and it's not looking too great. It's green on top but brown on the bottom. If I trim it back will it green up or just look horrible? I have no idea what to do at this point. It's very straggly
@TheOptimisticGardener
@TheOptimisticGardener 2 года назад
Give it a good haircut, it will thank you for it. You can dig a few cuttings from the edges so you’ll have some spares.

Should I wait until all flowers have faded before trimming back? They still have lots of flowers but some are starting to look straggly
@TheOptimisticGardener
@TheOptimisticGardener 2 года назад
That is up to you. If you feel the display has passed then trim away or you can wait until the flowers have all died. It won't hurt the plant, you can be very severe with creeping phlox :)

My phlox I planted didn't grow an inch the whole summer. It looks like a plastic plant. Is it dead?
@TheOptimisticGardener
@TheOptimisticGardener 11 месяцев назад
If it isn't green, then yes, but if it is green, give it a chance. They are very hardy plants as a rule.
@alyssapeters6271

Would you not propagate the cuttings? Seems a waste not to!
@RealBradMiller
@RealBradMiller Год назад
You can try, from my experience root cuttings in fall and winter on stems that have flowered are more successful. A stem that hasn't flowered yet is more likely to root than one that has. Not a hard and fast rule. Doesn't hurt to try, and to experiment with different methods(bottom heat, humidity dome, leave em to their own, etc.)

@@RealBradMiller good to know! Thank you! I've never had poppies before but really want to plant some at my new house.
@RealBradMiller
@RealBradMiller Год назад
@@alyssapeters6271 You are welcome, though I should clarify, cuttings from roots in fall and winter, and stem cuttings from stems that haven't flowered yet during the warmer months. 👍👍☺️ Edit: this is for creeping phlox(Phlox Subulata), not poppies! Didn't notice it in your last comment because I've been dealing with California and opium poppies all afternoon. 😋
