I just realized why your video was so calming as you gave your information. There was no loud, inane and annoying music ruining it. Thank you, thank you!
Actually, pruning is a very good idea if you have a LONG growing season too, (I’m in CA with my 1st frost date is 12/10). We get powdery mildew issues as the leaves age, so pruning and growing vertically helps keep the plants healthy for longer.
You're right. That's another good reason why to prune ... You could always mix baking soda with water and spray it on the leaf. That helps too for powder mildew .. thanks for watching 🌱
This was excellent. I have been leaving too many large bottom leaves. I knew they were not needed but your information gave me the extra confidence to prune down to 8-10 leaves. My area is a bit crowded anyway. Thank you so much.
I accidently grew my squash vertically this year. My cat kept laying on my new plants so I put tomato cages over everything to protect them. I decided to leave them because I really like the way they keep the plant off the ground. It is so much easier to spot squash that are ready to pick too!
This was wonderful and simple information. Thank you! I love squash plants so I’ve planted a lot this year. I’m definitely going to try growing them vertically this year so save space!
@@Greentgarden yes they are very delicious! I’ve seen others grow them vertically, but I’ve never tried it before. You make it look easy so I’m excited for this year. I’m in Utah so we don’t have a very long growing season either. I think this technique would be very useful
Don't have to be sorry! It's not your fault, I am sorry it's happening there ! I feel bad for the animals and people who live around there .. I bet it's tough to breathe or see anything over there .. hope it gets better soon 🙏🏾🌱
Another benefit of pruning is that the leaf, stem and flowers are also edible! Stuffed zucchini leaf and many other recipes to make with the leaves and stem and flowers.
I got so discourage about planting zucchini because of squash bugs, so I don’t plant it anymore but now I think I’m gonna try planting it again 😂😂 I subscribe to your channel and hit like too…so glad I found your video,,, thanks again and God bless you and your family…🙏🙏🙌🙌
New subbie. Thank you for posting. I'll be 67 in Sept, and I've decided to grow my squash vertically for the first time ever, although I confess, I love the huge leaves of squash plants. I actually kept seeds from a butternut squash and planted and they grew like crazy so I researched and the recommendation was to trellis it, so I moved the plants beside our fence. I never grew it before, but I learned the canned libby's pumpkin puree is actually 75 % butternut squash and 15 % Dickinson pumpkins, which I'll plant in July with the intention to can for the winter. My neighbors also love squash so I planted five more seeds which all sprouted and I need to transplant them I'm also growing corn, the three sisters, corn squash and green beans for the first time. Gosh, sorry for the long response. We finally moved from an apt back into a house, and my first garden in three years. Gardening is mt greatest joy and passion, although my back thinks otherwise !!! Thanks again for your great tips. Pruning is the absolute right thing to do. My friend is a master gardener and was the head gardener for the huge amusement park here. He has a masters degree in horticulture, and preaches about pruning and using a plants energy for fruit production, not leaves. I live just outside richmond, va. Again, sorry for the long comment. Happy gardening ...
You don't have to be sorry , this is amazing 🤩 Your doing amazing job , and lucky to have a master Gardner 🙏🏾 also Your neighbors are lucky to have you .. thank you so much for sharing this 🙏🏾 and thank you very much 🙏🏾🌱
@@Greentgarden dude, that was the wrong thing to say to me. I could talk gardening forever. But after watching your videos I went out that evening and pruned all the plants. Talked to my son asking for his help over the weekend to stake everything. We are going vertices. But overnight I got my first yellow squash. 3 weeks from seed to bearing fruit. The others have buds. I'm weird, but this scientist hooked ekg monitors to the plants in his lab, that were there for personal beauty. He was shocked he got a reading. When he cut a piece off one plant, his words, the plant fainted. Using quantum theory he experimented with simply think he was going to trim them, all the plants fainted. He won a prestigious award for his research. Now before I cut my grass I tell it to faint, just to be cautious, and as I trimmed the squash and tomatoes I explained why I was doing it. Every plant in my garden is from seeds this year for the first time in my life. But an old farmer who went to college to learn about restoring the soil, etc ... work, plant smart, not hard, but he told me right before frost to till in garden and plant clover in October. Even when there's snow, the clover is restoring the soil, and then till it back into the soil just before the date of the last frost. I will stop, but sincerely thank you for sharing your wisdom and experience. My garden is really small with only plants I like, but it's going to easily feed four families, and I keep planting seeds through the end of June, then August for fall veggies, and the excess I'm donating to a program I'm trying to start with opening a mobile outdoor soup kitchen targeting the homeless, but also donating to senior housing. And we're canning and freezing as much as we can. Last thing, do you grow cabbage? I bought so.e Russian giant cabbage seeds for fun. The seedlings are huge. I have extra. Do you want me to send you some? Patricia
Wow ! That's amazing! God bless you for all that donation.. I really don't grow cabbage , I was trying back 2 plants this year, I feel like it takes up too much space and too long lol but thank you .. keep up the hard work and the amazing donations! I always end up giving family, friends and neighbors, but if I have enough this year I do want to make a donation to to my local food pantry.. next year I want to start donating seedlings so I might end up seating a lot. And that's good you're doing all your plants from seeds , same here.. the best way
Going to plant in containers next year! Seems such a good way to make both pruning and finding fruit (so you don't accidentally let on grow to be enormous, as I did!). Thank you for sharing!
Hello Green T, from the Colorado prairie. This is a great video, I love the steady camera work, the no music and you are very kind to share what you know. Why is there world hunger if we can all grow Zucchini? lol. Stay well and happy and garden on!
First time here. Really great info and I am now subscribed. Only suggestion I have is to explain the difference between a male and female flower. I just learned this elsewhere and if I hadn’t, I would not have known what you were talking about. Thanks for the great info.
Thank you Karen 🌱 sorry about that , I I did quite some videos on male and female flowers and hand pollinate , I try not to do too much of it. Sometimes I feel like it's too much for people but you're right.. should of pop that in.. thanks for your feedback, it's always good to know ... Thanks for watching and subscribing 🌱
UPDATE: 2 weeks later I wanted some new potatoes with dinner tonight so I decided to dig into the bag and see how well the potatoes were actually doing. We are about 90 days from planting. I have to say I was thrilled beyond all measure that I got 4 lb and 20 potatoes from one 5 gallon grow bag. I have every confidence that when the rest of the grow bags mature, the harvest will be over 60 to 70 lb for 14 grow bags. We live on drained swampland and I have never been able to get the soil amended to the point where it would grow any more than just a few small potatoes. This way of container growing potatoes is epic! I will never grow potatoes in the ground again! Thank you so much for helping me learn to do it right.
Thank you for this video. I live in PA and I am growing in 45 gallon grow bags. I am going to try and prune my zucchini and squash. I didn't realize that I should do this.
thanks so much....i always prune my tomatoes and wondered about the zucchini? now I am not afraid to prune them as well! they can get so big, and hog valuable garden space! we want fruits, not just immense vines and leaves. Happy gardening!
Zone 6b. Back yard garden. Limited space so this is what we'll be doing for the 1 we have. Your pruning and tying knowledge you share, I'm grateful for.
Thank you for a great tutorial! Last year, my 2 zucchini plants took over my raised planter and the leaves were everywhere and there were so many times I couldn't see the fruit until it got so large or the fruit rotted before maturing. I'm getting ready to plant golden zucchini for the first time, I will keep your instructions in mind and I think my yield will be so much better. Subscribed.
Your welcome and I totally understand.. definitely try my way. You will save tons of space and get a faster Harvest. Better production and thank you so much for subscribing. I very much appreciate it...
Great video quality & detailed info. I'm curious about the short stake supporting the plant as it grows taller, and also how do you keep the pots from blowing over in the wind? It would be great if you post a follow-up video after the plant has grown twice as large. Subscribed. 👍
So That's a 3 ft stake and I do add another 3ft stake to make it 6ft as the plant grows, it gets windy here but the plant never falls over before , keeping 🤞.. if the wind gets really bad I could always put all the plants in containers closer . An absolutely! I will keep up the video on these plants as they're growing .. and thank you 🌱🙏🏾
Brilliant video my friend learned a lot I have a lot of zucchini’s going mad I was afraid to prune them not anymore I wii be out in the tunnels tomorrow good luck fro Ireland 🤝
Thanks for all the tips...I just learned about pruning my zuke and summer squash....and, they are doing better..they can breathe...I live in SE wisconsin, but, I have had a good production this summer!!
Your welcome 🙏🏾🌱 and that's awesome.. keep learning and pruning it helps so much .. I am a big fan of pruning.. glad you had a good summer harvest.. my summer plants are coming down to the end too.. time for fall garden
Very good information so far I got it for growing in a container. Usually I grow in the ground but I takes so much space for it. So I am going to try in a container. Thank you so much.👌
Thanks enjoyed your video. First time I’ve ever seen someone demonstrate this method and have always wanted to know how to do this or if it could be done. I have a long growing season but intense heat and pest pressure so would like to get the plant to produce quickly. Also I have raised beds and not a lot of horizontal space to grow so many large leaves.
Thank you so much 🙏🏾🌱 that's really nice your have a long gardening season ( Florida maybe) but dealing with heat is tuff .. Definitely pruning will help speed up the growing process with your plants...
I planted my first zucchini and am staking it! I need to still find a yellow summer squash but the nursery I was at was out so fingers crossed I’ll find one yet.
I hope you find some plants soon ! Summer Squash are super delicious 😋 and they produce so much more than zucchini plants... Growing Zucchini and squash vertically is the best way!
…..I am in my mid 50’s, grew up on a farm and gardening my whole life. Just now I learned that there was male and female shoots off the same plant…. I am feeling so ignorant right now!!! But Super informative, so thank you.
Thomas , thanks ! good to know. talk again sometime. thanks for the quick response. by the way , planted some tomatos few weeks ago, some leaves turning yellow. any suggestions? gbob
So if the tomato leaves are turning yellow, it could be two reasons. One reason would probably be too much water , the other one will be lack of nitrogen , Maybe you could add some organic fertilizer or some used coffee ground to give it a boost.. also remove some lover leaves and suckers from the tomato plants.. your welcome Thomas 🌱
We don't have short summers in North Carolina, but we do have a lot of problem with powdery mildew, so I like the concept of pruning the leaves close to the ground to prevent mildew and so the zucchini that need to be harvested can be seen.
