@@ariyanhossain-vb2zpHey hello...im a 17 yo student with a comm background...i got to know about research and want to do...do Harvard accepts it? I don't want to do regarding physics... I'm more interested in finance...and Do they pay for it? What is the duration of research? Learning python necessary? Plsss help
Great Job, Hayley. I can see your work was done by yourself. It's the real purpose of research. I didn't know there are a handful of platforms for HS publications. Thanks for your video. I'll encourage my son to publish his research paper which he is still working on for his AP research on one of your suggested journals.
Thanks for the all the tips and guidance Hayley, I’ve recently finished a 20 page paper relating to the topic of alcoholic fermentation that’s going to be presented at a university’s academy of science. I’m glad I can take steps to have my work potentially published at the age of 16! Again thank you!!!!
@@makkiewakkie9267 I got in contact with my science teacher at the time, and from there she included me into a competition being held at the academy of science. In short, make sure to check with your science teachers for such opportunities!
Is the process any different for social sciences? I'm a high schooler doing research on imperialist biases found in history textbooks. I don't have an "experiment" per se, but it's organized and systematic, and it would be awesome to publish my findings.
Hello Hayley! If I may ask, what level of knowledge did you have of physics/math at the time you had published your paper? As a high school student myself, I’m just trying to gauge how feasible this is for me with the classes I’ve taken so far. Thank you!
I was wondering if we have to research something new or if we can just do deep research into something that is already known. I want to do research and write about a specific disease to find out more about it. Do you think I can still get this published?
I've got so many research ideas and my teachers never showed me the way nor encouraged/motivated me in this direction. I have zero clue where to start. Yet all ive been told is not to share my research ideas with anyone and do it myself. But i dont know where to startttt.. need to discuss with someone, may need funds etc. I even want to know whether my research idea is even worth it or not. But who do i talk to?
How did you chose your research topic and how did you come up with a problem to do research on? Can you give a guideline over how you to select a problem to do research and write a manuscript?
Congrats Hayley. You have really motivated me to take it seriously . Earlier I was confused. I'm old though - I'm 20. You did great job way earlier.. GREAT WORK.. Love from INDIA :()
Great work!! I have a question- does it have to be in an experiment-result format? As in, does the experiment have to be carried out, or is it alright if it is derived and proven mathematically? I'm writing a paper on astrophysics, and it's not exactly possible for a high schooler to have access to advanced tech required for a lot of experiments :(
Hey AND THEREFORE, i am 17 years old. I also want to write a research paper. But if you don’t mind can i get your help as i am really stuck in one thing. I don’t know where to write our research, whether in soft-copy(on laptops) or in our regular notebooks?
That is really amazing and helpful! Good job! I thought it would be interesting for students in my school to learn how to publish their research. Thanks and keep going!
Wow and there are brilliant students with incredible potential living in underdeveloped countries not being able to either find or afford opportunities to showcase and develop on their talents. If only education was less business focused and more equity and development focused.
Most of the teachers just want to sort of" recreate" a research in their country that has already been conducted in some other country so they have a premade template to follow instead of having to start from scratch. Hence they dont encourage new ideas. :/ where do i go with these ideas? idk.
Thank you so so much. I live in India. It's not common here. I want to start my English literature research paper writing from grad school. I know I'll have to do it mostly alone and Independently. Thank you so so much!
@@scootybeet5485 gotta be dedicated. With all the corruption, gotta do it mostly yourself unless you haaavee to do it under a prof or you have someone u trust. Also, in my grad, we are already "assigned" with writing papers
Hi! I recently got a spot in a lab for the summer, and I was invited to stay for the school year, which I would love to do, but I’m worried I won’t be able to, as I’m starting my first year of IB this coming school year; I’ve heard to expect at least 5 hours of homework a night. Do you have any tips on how you managed your time during the school year and were able to balance IB and research?
first of all, congrats on getting the lab research opportunity! i think 5 hours of homework a night is a bit exaggerated; i personally spent probably an average of 3 hours max? (though this could just be me, and i procrastinate a lot lol.) so i'd say don't worry about it too much, and the only piece of advice (which is pretty generic) is to create a schedule so you can keep on top of things. hopefully this helps!
How did you find a spot at a lab. I’ve been looking and I can’t seem to find anything. Did you just call up labs in your area to see is they would take people?
@@szymongwozdz2338 hi! so i started early, in like February, because I wanted to start in the summer, but you can start whenever, depending on what time you intend to start the position. I would say to start digging and sending emails out about 3 months before you want to start working in a lab. I went to my local university website, clicked on the department I was interested in (psychology/neuroscience for me, but it could be bio, physics, chemistry, comp sci, whatever u like), and clicked on professors to see what they were researching. If you search up yt videos on how to land research spots for highschoolers, you will find them, youtube was the most helpful resource in getting me started. I personally wrote emails to the professors whose research and labs I was interested in. So you’re gonna have to write a lot of emails, because many professors will say no or won’t even respond, but I developed one email template and then substituted different info ab each professor in, to make that process easier. In your emails, make sure you bring up that specific professors research to show interest, and talk about why you would like to intern/be in their lab. if u would like to see the email template I used, drop your email and I can send one!
Hiii Haley thank you so much!! This might sound like a dumb question but I was wondering if in my research paper I have to discover something new or just write about the topic in depth? This would be my first research so I literally know nothing about it. Also I was wondering if the program you got published with is international and if everything is done online?
Hello Hayley. I am currently a high school student and I want to do research in economics but the data is not available on internet. So can you please advice me on whether I should do cold emailing to proffesors or try to do research on my own? Hope you help! Thanks
Its great you showed some pathways. But it lacked basic information like how to select a topic, how to collect data for research, how to analyze it, what methods were used, how many steps were involved, etc. This is bulk of the work. You shared like the last steps of publishing.
Hi, firstly thanks for the video. I am really curious about math and physics I m reading university and maybe a Ph.D. level book with myself but in my country(Turkey )Professors don't want high school students (I tried speak face to face) Have chance to work with professor from abroad or what can I do with myself?
Hey there 👋 I'm Palwasha from stardust research, if you need any information or help related research, thesis & review articles. Or if you need any kind of help in publishing your article Do let me know. I have a great experience regarding research and currently working with research agency. we offer guaranteed fast track publishing in international journals like °Scopus °Web of science °Pubmed etc
You mentioned that the entire research process took you about 6 months, but could it take less time with high-quality work with the least need for corrections?
You are great Hayley. Thank you very much for your help 😊. I want to publish my own research as well. One question, how much did it cost to you for publishing your research?
i'm not sure about the other journals (you can check the websites or email them to find out) but the one that my research was published in-the Journal of Emerging Investigators-only accepts manuscripts from middle to high school students who haven't graduated yet. hope this helps!
Hey there Haley! I was wondering how you sent your figures? Did you have to send a separate document or did you just send your paper as a whole? Thank you :)
i sent the figures as separate files so the manuscript didn't have the figures but i was asked to include the figure captions in the document. hope this helps!
hey I am a high school student who wants to email a professor and impress them and possibly get a positive reply. Since u mentioned that we should read reasearches/ works published by professors and mention that in our email to have a good impression of us on them, how can I as a high school student do? :( I tried to read the professors work but i couldnt understand anything bcs I just passed out of high school and have no knowlege in my field what so ever. What can I do? any suggestions?
thank you! conducting the experiments didn't take too long, i did two different ones and they took probably two hours max. the first draft of the manuscript took about a week to write so again, not very long but it underwent a lot of changes during the review process :)
How did you chose your research topic and how did you come up with a problem to do research on? Can you give a guideline over how you to select a problem to do research and write a manuscript?
I'm not sure if you still read comments, but do any of (Edited auto correct did me dirty) these journals (or other unlisted journals that target high schoolers) publish in the field of philosophy?
Hello thank you so much for this video it is so helpful I wanted to ask - did you use a rubric or an outline for the research? What standards or rules should we follow for the manuscript? Is it just like a research paper where there are usually 5 paragraphs?
no problem! i didn't have a rubric but i did plan out how i was going to write my paper. as for standards and rules you'll have to refer to the specific journal you're trying to get published at. there are no limits on the number of paragraphs you have (though research papers tend to have a lot more than 5 paragraphs haha).
Hi Hayley! I'm a high school senior and also want to publish research paper. I viewed the website ''Journal of Emerging Investigators'' and also checked your research paper. It was so well written btw!! I have a query about the process. Do we have to submit fee to publish our paper. I searched a lot on the website but couldn't find a reassuring answer. Can you please guide me about the fee submission process? Another thing: Are you comfortable giving advice on research topic? I want to do research in a physics topic related with mechanical engineering. Do you have any suggestions?
thank you! nope, there's no fee involved for publishing, it's completely free. as for research topics related to mechanical engineering, this was the first result when i googled it: www.mcgill.ca/mecheng/research you can look through the different sections and see if anything interests you. i personally decided on my research topic after coming across an article called "the physics of crumpled paper" or something like that, and i thought that was really cool so yeah :)
@@HayleyChu And one more thing, as I discussed about writing research paper with my senior friends(they're in Uni)... They told me it would be a difficult process because I need a teacher or professor to assist me.. In short I should probably give up lol.. Did your teacher assisted you too through-out the process? Due to corona, It's impossible for me to meet any teacher or prof and I need to write the research paper until 20th of May..
@@blether_weather you're welcome! the publication process was definitely challenging for me bc i didn't personally know any other high school students who had published research, and like i mentioned in the video although my physics teacher did agree to be my mentor (which i'm really grateful for!) i did most of the work myself (like writing the manuscript, submitting the different versions, etc.), and i think it's very doable bc the editors are willing to support you along the way. i'd still say go for it!
