How to "punch in" using GarageBand iOS (Record multiple takes)

"Punching in" is a way to record a part in multiple takes (sections) and can make playing tricky parts much easier by separating them in to chunks.
In this video, I show you three different ways to "punch in" using GarageBand iPhone or GarageBand iPad.

Im a very whiney perfectionist, I always resorted to recording riffs, solos, or whole bars of chords in one big take, I dont know why lol Recently, I started sucking up and punching in multiple takes :)

I use the 2nd track method. Even in desktop DAWs with playlist features. Something in my mind can see things better as separate tracks. And then maybe comp the takes on one track. LOL.

Agree. I tend to lay things out like that. I never use the “multi-take” features on tracks either. Get so confused by which version of which take I’m playing. Would rather have desperate tracks for each take.

Hey there. It can be a little fiddly for sure. Make sure your cuts are right on a bar marker so you can line them up more easily.

Put down any idea you have, later on you may find something you’d put down doesn’t fit the song & you’ll most likely end up editing it, it’s ä byootiful world editing.

Hey there. I haven’t used the Zoom to record in GarageBand iOS yet to be honest. I use it with my PC but only for live streaming, and found that the gain is usually around the 12 o’clock position to get my faders at 0 and have a nice signal. But it’s definitely a matter of trial and error depending on the mic or device you are recording.

In the first half of the video, where you're explaining vocal punch-in, the top 2 tracks appear to be on mute (bright blue color and X'd out). So we just ignore those tracks, right? For the method where you're punching in 2 bars before the target area, I guess the drawback is that you're effectively muting those 2 bars, as well. To me that's not quite a true punch in because you're missing part of the performance leading up to the target area.

How are you bringing up the window with the gain slider you're using to turn down the new vocals, eg on-screen at 5'10"? If I ever apply automation to a track, which means that the vol slider in the left-hand pane is greyed out/non-functioning, I'm stuck with re-entering and using automation to tweak overall volumes. Is this a way of changing the overall level of a track that has automation?! That would be a game-changer for me... Thanks so much for all these videos - they are incredibly useful.

Hi Pete, I haven’t tried the nondestructive alterations with a guitar. As I have said before when I cut and paste you sometimes get a click, it drives me mad. I will give it a try in the morning and see if this works. Thanks again.

It’s a great way to approach it as you can have audio before and after and find a nice spot where the volume is low to split. Still not perfect for a resonant instrument like guitar. Perhaps I’ll show a cross-fade technique using two tracks and automation for guitar at some stage.

Hi Pete, I have put a video onto the FB Page where I have recorded, Cut and Past, Punch In and finally used Automation. I don’t understand why in certain sections there is no click. Automation appears to be the best solution to resolve the issue but it’s frustrating. I’ve asked, in the video, if anyone else has any suggestions. Cheers mate.

Every time I am recording vocals and I want to punch in my vocals always sound louder or lower then the other part. And I don’t like how it sounds is there a way to fix that?

It really comes down to making sure you are using the same settings on the track and trying to keep your distance from the mic consistent.
