How To Put A NEW Hem On Your Jeans | Step By Step

Let's hem some jeans that are too long! There's two ways to do this, a professional way where they keep the original hem and this way where we make a new hem. I like this way better because it looks cleaner.
You need a sewing machine, a ruler, some chalk, and a safety pin or a sewing pin. Mark your jeans with the chalk and the safety pin where you want them to end. Make sure you're wearing shoes so that you can get the length right. Then flip them inside out and draw a line with your chalk straight across. Measure one inch down from there and draw another line. Now cut along that second line and tuck everything inside.
All you are doing is sewing a straight stitch right across, and when you're done you're done! It won't look exactly the same at first, but that's because it needs to be worn first. Once you wear them a few times the difference won't be noticeable at all!

this is really helpful. my roommate gave me a pair of jeans which needed to be shortend at least 5 inch. and it is a slim fit jeans with very narrow pipes at the end. So I told her: we want to keep the original hem etc, but that's not really possible, 'cause 5 inch up it's much more wider, so this is second best option. luckely I've got some oker yellow thread, which matches the original thread.
@tolitsaso

I came across this video because I was searching how to fix regular hem. I had my jeans shortened but the tailor didn't keep the original hem. Was bummed about my jeans having regular hem but turns out it will just get distressed after a few uses or wash as said in the video. I'll see if that's true! Thank you!!

FYI, If you put your pins in vertical instead of horizontal, you can sew right over the pins ( keep ball part out of the way though) Then take out pins after you’re finished. The sewing machine needle has never hit the pins, if it does to slides to the side of the pin. I’ve never had an issue hitting straight on a pin. I was taught this way and been doing it for years. Having pins in side like you do, I would think it could move the fabric sideways a little. Idk. I would suggest to start sewing on the side of your garment. When you go all the way around and reverse a few stitches ( to lock stitching in) you might see it if it’s in the front. It won’t be noticeable if you start on the inside side seam. They also have jean thread in stores. ( for normal color thread used on jean seams, not white thread) You’re doing an awesome job😘
@amierichan1428
@amierichan1428 2 года назад
Hey, there, just have to own my disagree:-) -- I would never, ever recommend sewing over pins. It will be okay much of the time, but the rest? Broken needles, which if broken in the exact wrong way can end up down in the feed dogs, it's just an unnecessary heartache. Also, sewing over a pin will make that stitch ever so loose, also not a great idea.
@littledancingfawn
@littledancingfawn 2 года назад
@@amierichan1428 ive been sewing for for almost 40 years. NOT once have I’ve ever had an issue. Again. This was the way my sewing teacher taught thousands of students to do it. But hey, you do you boo. It’s all good. Personally I wouldn’t want to keep stopping every 2 seconds take out a pin.
@amierichan1428
@amierichan1428 2 года назад
@@littledancingfawn Okay, maybe you start breaking needles over pins in years of sewing 40 - 55:-D. (Oh, that very dangerous game of stating one's experience or credentials-- someone can and will always top you.) Full disclosure, I have never taken a sewing class in my life. When I started in 1967, it was with an immense deal of input by my aunt, a children's fashion designer. I have no idea how it works now, but during her education at RSD, the students did all the sewing of their designs. When she was working at the big children's fashion companies and for McCalls patterns and their magazine, she did all of her own sewing of the prototypes of her designs on the companies' machines. She drilled into me that the companies were adamant that no matter how fast they were working, to never sew over pins. It could injure the designers and it could break needles, and even a couple of stitches with a broken needle could mean a very costly repair to the machine. And here's one of her tips with pinning-- don't, when it comes to zippers; use masking tape, instead. Works beautifully!:-) To some degree, our own individual experience is neither here nor there. Anyone reading this thread, please, please contact sewing machine repair shops and ask them if you should be sewing over pins! I would trust them over me or anyone else on this thread (who isn't a sewing machine repair person!). And I would be very hesitant to refer to someone as "boo", not knowing their age or anything else about them. I'm sure this won't make a difference to you: but please don't do that.
@littledancingfawn
@littledancingfawn 2 года назад
@@amierichan1428 lol, I’m not reading all that. I seem to have struck a nerve. 😂 Again…. YOU DO YOU BOO! I have not EVER hit a damn needle doing it that way. My grandma, mother and teacher of about idk 30 years taught me to do it that way. Calm down the world is not coming to an end because you were taught differently! Waste your time taking needles out every 2 seconds, idc..🤣

One thing I started doing (out of convenience but is actually really helpful).. after cutting off the original hem, I take that chunk of jean and lay a few inches of stitching down on the hem of the off cut pieces. I try to get right next to the original stitch. That helps me dial in perfectly the stitch length and color and makes sure the machine is ready to stitch through multiple layers of denim. It's easy to see the slightest difference when the two stitches are side by side. Thanks!

Stylish Dad yes, it was me. I'm an amateur at sewing. Basic skills. There are a few tools in my toolbox and you've mentioned most of them. But, I couldn't live (okay, sew) without my sewing guide that ensures I get a straight line. I also suggest a magnetic pin case to help keep those sewing pins from wandering. When we moved into our home, we had to sleep on an inflatable bed until our furniture arrived. The lady who lived here before loved to sew. We were sleeping in her sewing area (basement family room). You guessed it, our bed deflated from a sewing pin (or several)! And, as you've said, they're sooooo painful when stepped on!

Very true, just as easy but I'm not a fan, this was supposed to release after that video, and this one will make more sense then.

The video looks great, but that thread tension is making me break out in hives! Top tension looks much too high, or bobbin tension is non existent.
