How to put old Xbox hard drive into a 360 Slim 

2020 my dude and you still out here saving lives

This trick is saving my childhood. For kids growing up in the 2010s, a lot of our fun was had virtually through games. I spent so much time playing minecraft xbox 360 it is crazy. All the worlds made from hours and hours spent sitting in my basement grinding away with my friends having the time of our lives, all the places we visited, memories made, are on a single OG xbox hard drive thats been sitting silently in my drawer, waiting. I look forward to seeing those places again and the nostalgia it will bring once I get it into my 360 E. Thank you for helping me do that.

I got my slim for free and i bought bf4 and i couldnt play it..thanks you saves me 100$

This works. I bought a 20gb external HD from gamestop for $14. Took me about 5min to disassemble and install the HD into the slim. Now I can play Destiny which for some reason wouldn't work using USB flash storage..thank you for posting this video

Thanks! This is very concise and helped me out. A very simple process. I folded two sheets of printer paper [will hold no static charge] separately to keep the harddrive from jiggling. One folded piece on top, the other underneath. Worked for me. Just thought I'd share. Thanks again.

Thanks, very helpful! I didn't have the Torx T6 so I also just hacked my way through the casing until I could get to the inner portion. It takes a while but it can be done. Then I stacked a few thin Lego strips under the drive in the Slim cavity, it's perfectly snug! Great vid, can't believe anyone would thumbs down this vid when the instructions are so clear.

Donot use this.method just go out and buy a new one.I was using this and had to take it out after a few says because soon it will begin to over heat your.xbox due to expose metal not being covered on the hardrive. It will also began to corrupt games causing them to freeze or nolonger work until u take it out

I purchased a used Xbox 360 Slim years ago and six months ago it failed on me (does not power on). I discovered that the previous owner installed the hard drive in the same way you did, by pulling it out of the og Xbox 360 hard drive casing and plugging it in to the Slim with cardboard to hold it in place. When I replaced my Slim with a working model, I put the hard drive into a proper case to better protect it from jostling around.

ATTENTION IF YOU DONT HAVE SCREWS!!!: (only works on 1st set of screws) grab a lighter and a knife from your cabinets. this may seem unsafe but it WORKED. heat the plastic around the screws till it becomes liquidy and then cut circles around it with a knife.

You can buy the 360 case/cover on Amazon for $6 so it's secure. $110 for a 250GB hard drive in stores!? That's Ridiculous! The 320 GB one is $60 on Amazon in case anyone was wondering. You can use a laptop (2.5') hard drive too. But look it up first because you will get banned from Xbox live if you don't do it right. Needs to be certain brand and hard drive needs to be flashed for it to work. Easy to do actually. I'd do it but I'm way to poor. Will just put my old 20 GB in.

Saved soooo much money with this thanks! An HHD of 250 was 30$ at my GameStop and the HDD of 250 for Xbox slim where 175$

Did this for a friend a few years back and used bits of packing foam to secure the HDD instead of letting it knock around in the cavity.

I ripped off the plastic case with my bare hands now I'm working on the metal. Wish I had tools but I can't wait to play "ground zeroes".

Sweet dude. Thanks. Just so you know, if you put tape on the hard drive that extends past the edge it's super easy to pull the hard drive back out. Also, I folded up some paper and pressed it inside in order to keep mine more secure.

Okay, so I’m way behind the curve, but I found this video very helpful. I was too cheap to buy the t-10 bit, so I just pried it open. I guess Amazon has an enclosure to secure the HDD and make the installing and removing it if, in the unlikely event that I’ll ever remove it. I may be too cheep to spring a few bucks for that as well. Thanks again.

mate this worked perfectly, my old xbox 250 HDD memory card from the elite worked as soon as put it in, I just used a pair of pliers to get the screws out, it takes time but its ok, I also taped the sides of the Hard drive to assist with pulling it out, and to make it more secure I put card board around the sides and over the top to make it nice and snug, you saved me money and time, thank you!

Ah so i see it's pretty straight-forward, no weird stuff to do or anything, just basically "take it out of the old shell, and if you have a slim HDD case, put it in, otherwise it's ok still"

A small knife at the right angle will take care of the screws, make sure you use a knife you don't care ab messing up though, once the the screws break loose you can pretty much unscrew them with your hand

I did it and it works perfectly! I also added some paper towels in the spaces between the Xbox and the hard drive to keep it stable

there's a connecting adapter that you slide off of the hard drive.. it's like any external hard drive: the casing is what makes it look so "technical" shit is a brick and it fits like a glove into the slim's "hard drive port"

No unless you're actually trying to break it. Just make sure you ground yourself often by touching something metal before you touch the mobo.

Just a suggestion: If you are going to use something like pliers then I would put something like a piece of rubber between the pieces of metal and the hard drive on each side. It will add a little cushion for pressure (still don't push it any more than you would have before), but will also keep you from scratching the circuit board.

Nice video. Works just fine. I bought a 1 tb hard drive for 60 bucks. When I plugged it in it only allowed me to use 32 gb of it. So I just used this trick to plug in the 60gb HDD I had from my xbox 360 arcade.

As a tip, you can buy replacement enclosures on Amazon for just a few dollars. Grab one of these and it'll make you HDD much more secure.

It works, I just did it. It's a bit hard to get the hard drive into the bay correctly, but it's worth it. Toke me 3 minutes max to do so. Oh and don't think that you're going to cut you way into the HD case to get the hard drive out, becuase I tried that and ended up buying a torx. You can cut threw the plastic, but its when you get to the point where the metal frame is screwed INTO the hard drive that things get dicey. I highly recommend just buying a torx and doing it the nice way. Good vid

The hard drive can also have it's internal casing on but it does require bending the metal.

To give the drive more support inside the console you can tape electrical tape around it but not to much

A better way I've seen taking it out of the xbox is to first before putting it in, put two tabs using electrical tape so you can just grab the tabs and pulling it out. I'm sure this approach is fine but if you grabbed it and squeezed to hard it might brake.

yep, you could ue my duct tape idea. works fine. (put tape on sticker side of hard drive and fold it over to sticky side of tape) so you have something to pull on.

on amazon they have cheap replacement hard drive cases for the new xbox so when your doing this handling the HD wont be as risky

Thanks for the video. I grabbed a 60 GB and will try it as I have the slim 4GB with hard soldered flash chip which crapped out when Microsoft sent the corrupted update. Lots of peeps have suffered from Microsoft's software update. They are staying quiet. I've been using a usb drive but the system cant update due to the 4gb chip now being read only
