I cant tell you how many times ive forgotten to tie and clip my pants until im on the ice warming up >.< I am so glad im not the only one who struggles with jerseys. What ive decided i like best is putting it on before i put the chestie arms on. I slip the jersey over my head, then out the chest pad arms into the jersey sleeves then put my arms into the chest pad arms. And unfortunately my equipment doesnt fit well so whenever i have to adjust my mask or drink water i usually slip a whole arm out of the protector to reach x.x

Looks good. A couple things I do differently is none of my gear touches the floor with the exception of my leg pads, which input upside down against the wall. I put my skates on before my pants cause being 44 years old my feet seem to get further away every year. I am a chesty tucker as well but what I do is remove my pant lace from the top eyelet on each side, bring the lace up through the loop on my chesty, cross them, then back down to the top eyelets of my pants and then tie together. Great work.

Great video Maria! Some old-timers say "breezers" instead of pants and "sweater" instead of jersey. My toe-ties are tied to my blades (not over the boot) and I never untie them. After undressing, I twist each skate and tuck the blade into a corner of my pad. Then I use a strap (I have those old leather straps) to hold each skate in place. Then I cross-buckle the tops of my pads together and throw them over my shoulder which leaves plenty of space in my bag.

Been playing goalie on and off since the late 1980s, so I figured I probably wouldn't see anything new in this video. But I find it interesting to see how different goalies do things, so I watched. As it turned out, it has never occurred to me to use a skate lace to tie the pants to the upper part of the chesty like that. Gonna try that out myself this week. Thanks, Maria!

Four tips to share with the group: 1. I have always worn wool socks with a garter belt, with my knee pads OVER the socks, but have recently been told I should be wearing the knee pads UNDER my socks. After trying both ways, I am sticking with the knee pads OVER the socks, with a bit of clear tape underneath each knee to make sure they don't sag. 2. Knee pads are a MUST: I prefer less bulky (Vaughn SLR 2's), to Warrior's which feel like my knees are hermetically trapped and hamper my mobility; 3. On my chestie, I have worn NOTHING underneath for years, which serves to keep me much cooler when in Spring, the rink warms and the ice is soft; And yes, strap the Chestie down in the back, and lace through your pants to keep it from rising; and 4, I always adjust my mask tightly before i step on the ice. Inevitably with the sweat and stretching on the straps, your mask is going to become looser and you don't want it obstructing your concentration.
@goalietraining

Great tips all around Scott - - thanks so much for the insight - good tip on the mask, I feel like mine gets a little sloppy during the game, might try snugging it up a little.

Maria, You always bring a smile to my face😁 the laces through the chesty 👍🏻 As a female, I’ve always struggled with keeping my chesty down!! Same with my player gear. Suspenders help keep it down from swallowing my head! I swear one day, I’m going to get a custom piece for my T. rex arms. I was in a Bauer Senior Small, now a Warrior G2 Senior Small, I always have to creatively customize / shorten the arm straps with duct tape. I’m 5 mos post rotator cuff sx as of yesterday, and the Jersey is a REAL struggle now… guess I’ve got to get stronger in that arm. Grateful to be back on the ice. Thanks Maria as always ❤️

Glad you are back on the ice, good luck with the remainder of the shoulder rehab... you will know you are back to 100% when you can pull that jersey on :)

Being a beginner goalie, but an experienced goalie parent, I knew exactly in which order to put my stuff on. And it is almost exactly the one described in the video (I use suspenders that I setup exactly the same way, don't feel the need to lace the chesty though). The only tiny difference is that I put the neck protector after I put on my skates, having something around my neck while I'm bent forward to lace my skate is uncomfortable. And being a hockey parent, I switched to waxed laces a long time ago.

After watching this for the first time about a week ago, I was pleasantly surprised with one little trick. I’ve recently had issues with my chest protector riding up when I’m either bent over or in the butterfly (never had that issue 40 years ago as my chest protector was basically a baseball catchers’ protector) , and because I wear an XL protector it almost felt claustrophobic. I made a snap for the back of my protector that hooks to my pants, but I tried the little skate lace trick and tied it through my chest protector front and what an amazing difference it made, THANKS for that little gem of a comment.

Not sure why I clicked this video, I've been playing goal for like 25 years, I know how to put my gear on. But, I'm glad I did, it was fun to see how another goalie does it. I do a number of things differently, and some things the same. I keep all my gear in my bag, I have it packed in a very specific order so that the first stuff to put on is at the top, and the last stuff is in the bottom. This is my order: Padded under shirt on first. Then my jock. I wear lightweight in pants/leggings over my jock to help keep it in place. Then my hockey pants go on (no suspenders). Next are my skates. After that, I put on my knee wraps. And then my leg pads, my leg pads have been around awhile (almost time to replace them) so I still have leather straps and buckles, so this step takes awhile. Now that all the lower body gear is on, and the remaining gear is pretty quick to put on, I take some time to breathe and clear my mind, and then some visualization. After that, my neck guard goes on, and then my chest protector. Chest protector over the pants. Now it's jersey time, and fortunately I'm pretty small and the goalie jersey my league team has for me is really big, so it isn't as much of a struggle. Don't forget to tuck that jersey! Finally, glove, blocker, and mask goes on last.

Learn a tip, and give a tip:) I love the pant lace through the loops of the chesty. Can’t wait to try that one👍🏻👍🏻 One thing I would suggest is adding hockey socks over your knee guards. I found they got stuck on the inside of the pads a couple times when I didn’t use socks. With socks on I apply sock tape on the top and bottom of the guards to keep them in place better. You may find that helpful:)

Great video! I think we all forget something at one time or another. Like that you use the G-Form knee pads, I do too! I will also use the G-Form elbow pads as I like the little extra protection in case the chesty's elbow pads move on me. I have had that happen. When I pack my bag, it is packed in the order in which I put the gear on. that way it all remains in the bag till I need it and if I have to move for some reason, it is still in the bag.

I can't wait to get into a locker room full of goalies. One question: Don't you have shelves and or cubbies in your locker room? My glove, blocker, water, and mask go on the top shelf. Sweater and chestie get hung. Pants/jock, socks, under shirt go on bench. Skates and pads stay on the floor. Regular laces. Haven't tried the waxed laces. Seem "fussy" (to borrow your word) to me. My only difference in gear sequence is to secure the goalie pads(Warrrior RTG2) toe straps to the skates first before putting on the skates. Was a lot of blood. Another lesson I learned wrong way :-))

Always fun to see how other goalies go about getting dressed. While I also lay out my gear and take up more space than I probably need (social distancing, yeah, that's the ticket), I also pack my gear in a specific order before heading out. Following the same order ensures A) that all my gear fits in the bag and B) I don't forget anything at home. Pulling it out at the rink, gear goes to its "assigned" location and then it's similar to Maria's method. Minor differences: I wear hockey socks to keep the knee pads secure and I put my trapper on before the mask because I like it very secure and tight to my hand and, weirdly, I can't get the same torque when I have the mask on.
@goalietraining
@goalietraining 2 года назад

@@goalietraining My mask is custom-fitted, so it slides on and sits perfectly 99 times out of 100, with the 1 time serving as a reminder that I need to get my hair cut because the mop is too thick. I might be more particular to the way my trapper is set than my mask; I fiddle with most of the velcro straps on the trapper to get the right feel and with the mask on, I don't have the same visibility. I ended up getting used equipment for a shinny league. I had a friend who was supposed to come to the rink with me to help me get dressed cause I had absolutely no idea what I was doing. I would have been decently ok, but I didn't have laces or a strap on my pads, so they kept spinning around worse than an amateur pole dancer. I tried the skates on, and they seemed a lil snug but nothing too bad. Until I got to the rink, put them on again and actually STOOD UP in them. I can't see what width they are as it's second hand and worn off but ow ow ow. Way too narrow. My feet still don't feel right and it's been 4 hours. I only had the funds at the moment to get a player helmet cause it was $65 vs like $200 on average, and I felt I kept eating the foam bit for the chin on the cage. Everything just wants to ride up on a goalie - so I thank you for the tips to help keep everything down. But I'm not totally discouraged yet. I'll find a wider pair of second hand skates, and try getting dressed before the rink again. I'm just such an awkward shape. My ATK measurement puts me in 26" pads claiming I should be 4'10 when I'm 5'5. Despite the awkwardness ad the pain however, I signed up to be there, so I at least floundered onto the ice for 10 minutes partially hanging onto the crossbar for dear life before my feet were probably turning purple and I was in tears. PS the skates came with waxed laces, but I think they were a lil bit old because they did not move like yours did. I was having a large amount of trouble getting it loose enough to get my foot in there.

It can be confusing, but it's great that you have the desire to learn how to do it yourself.
