How do we avoid predatory cats in a town getting at a low robin box? i've a suitable garden fence with ivy for coverage... but the cats walk along the top of the fence and the neighbours might object to nails driven into the top of the fence and cut sharp!

Many experts say Robins use open fronted boxes mostly but I've seen a Robin 2 times come and go from the bird box I put up recently, which is a circle hole entrance box! And the box is about 3m off the ground screwed and cable tied to my back wall which is made out of brick! Although the robin isn't nesting in it, he is definitely roosting in it. So I refuse to believe that an open fronted boxes are wat robins prefer lol.

Thorny bushes help

@@DirigiblePlum69refuse? Just because they use it as a roosting place in cold winters doesn't mean that's their ideal place to nest and have younglings.

but how do you fix it to a tree trunk?
@dengueberries

You can tie it up or screw it in

What kind of maitenance do nest boxes need? Do they need to be periodically cleaned? If so, how often?

use a screw if the back of my nesting box is anything to go by. unfortunately screw hole is made of wood not plastic so i hope it doesn't rot. a plastic insert would have been better.

Any decent quality wood should last many years. I've seen some nest boxes in wood up 15-20 years without them falling apart/falling down. Try to avoid plastic if you can, please.

Difficult in Urban areas thanks to Cats, Squirrels and Magpies ,they are relentless.

Songsbirds often have greater nesting success in urban areas due to fewer birds of prey.

Looks like 10 to 12 feet off the ground would be good.

Just got a pair of oak tits bringing nesting material into the nest box I built. I found the dimensions online and made sure to keep the opening small for tits or chickadees. I hope they are successful. So many other birds are around at our feeders I worry it's too crowded. Ours faces SE and gets some morning sun but stays shady after that.

jsmcguirelll: Soultion: Don't feel you need to provide a daily feeding frenzy for every bird passing through your area. probably half of them are migratory and heading somewhere else soon no matter what. Feed them occasionally, not daily, and observe what part of the feed mixes get wasted, then avoid the mixes that emphasize the waisted material. Try to determine which seeds your preferred birds are consuming. Example: Our juncos are very happy with uncooked oatmeal which I happen to have way too much of. Our scrub jays enjoy filberts or Hazel nuts (cracked and removed and broken up a bit). My Hazel nut farmer friend gave me several years supply. I know most birds love sunflower seeds which can be a really expensive choice and is why I have not yet figured out how to draw in the Chickadee yet, but I haven't put a lot of work into chick dee dee dee yet. So my simple rule of thumb for my place is feed and house the loyal and ignore those just passing through. 🐦

@@notsohandytim5090 Update - Mr and Mrs Oaktit managed to fledge FIVE and we watched each one squeeze out and jet up to the nearest oak tree. It was a gift to witness. ~6 months later there are 4 tits hanging around and may be these same birds. Its late Feb so I see no signs of nest material gathering or associated behavior yet. I took your advice and dialed back the volume of seed for the welfare finches. They are hogs at the trough, but if they get spooked the nuthatch, warblers, woodpeckers and chickadees zoom in for a few minutes of calm eating. Here on central california coast there are many full-year residents, while the migrants come through in Spring and Fall. I think I want to help migrants since they need all the energy and advantages they can get to fly their thousands of miles to breed or overwinter. That's when we are sure to present the full buffet. Let's hope these tits repeat last years breading extravaganza!

Driving an iron nail on a tree is not a good idea as it hurts the tree. Use wire around the tree 3 or 4 times and it will stay....

Actually, bird young are protected by British law, stealing chicks can get you a hefty fine, or maybe even a jail sentence depending on the bird's conservation status.
