How to put up an Awning. 

I ordered a standard 3m manual and it arrived within 48hours which was perfect. I installed it today and 95% was a one man job, I only needed help for 5 mins to lift it into place. The instructions aren’t great so watching how to get it right on your video was invaluable. Hopefully it will last as long as yours - thanks for sharing.

Super video and super detailed. Minor observation: at 3'40" the washer order should be (a) fit bracket to bolts then (b) place flat washer on bolt on TOP of bracket then (c) spring washer on top of flat washer (no washer should be fitted behind the bracket)? You've corrected this by 4'52" after you needed to reposition the brackets.

The 2.5 Standard manual awning arrives and did not have the expansion bolts as shown . Primrose say that the 2.5 model need only raw plugs with screw in bolts. Make sure the bolt holes are drilled tight for the plug to fit tight and the screw in bolts to hold the whole awning well. 8-9ft off the ground seems a good height to fix brackets and ensure they are less than 88 inches apart or the awning wont fit in the gap between the brackets. 2 ladders and 4 hands manage the fitting easily and its ideal when installed. I also bought the winter cover for severe winter weather.

Thanks for sharing. I'm planning to fit mine this weekend and this is a big help. Your situation is ideal for the budget one as it's fitted under the soffit board, protecting it from rain during the winter. I've gone for the half cassette which protects the retracted roll from the weather where it's more exposed. It's £200 more but I don't think the budget one would last more than a couple of winters without being under the soffit.

Nice awning and good value. Just watch out for heavy rain; a friend left hers open and forgot about it during a downpour. The weight of the water buckled one of the sides.

I ordered a budget version. Does not come with metal anchors but large plastic rawlplugs so I got some M8 shield anchors from Screwfix.👍

Used your vid before I put up my Primrose 3.0m multi stripe awning yesterday. Really pleased with the colour. I finally set the centres for the fixing brackets at 2.86M and would say that is about right (maybe 2.83M).It gives some sideways movement for adjustment. The bracket positioning is a really small gap so it has to be "fairly" accurate. Measured it in the box - it worked out ok on the wall. Used your tip on using open ended spanner, really useful, thanks, as the bolt ends push out too far to using a socket to tighten them up.

Just had my 4.5m awning delivered from primrose. It looked like the best company to buy from. I'll be fitting at the weekend. If all goes well I'll be buying another 2.

I now have three of these awnings, and yes they do fade (from green to bluish in my case) - and on the non-cassette types the outer edge and valance get rather mucky if you don't buy cover bags and put them on for the winter season. Primrose do supply replacement covers, and I found it easier to remove and replace them WITHOUT taking the awning down - provided you have clearance at the end away from the winder. As a tip, I found that filing the sharp edges of the slot ends to a small taper eases entry of the new cover with its plastic rod inside the hem. Also be very slow and careful when a seam is entering the slot, to avoid catching the edges of the material in front of the stitch line.

Thanks or this. Very useful. Mine is almost put together on the living room floor (came as a split 3m one as a kit!). I must have absorbed the instruction book well enough so I had realised there wasn't enough head space. I made my two errors assembling it! I'm going to look at the 3 years on now.

You need to consider the weight support above the awning for the anchor bolts... Ideally 6-7 courses of house brick (40cm) above your brackets... Or alternatively use spreader brackets (long downover brackets) that will dissipate the awning weight stress into the lower brick courses. Looking at your first try, I'd reckon this wasn't enough ... Your second try by coincidence has probably saved you a wrecked wall/awning.

There I was looking for an awning for our patio. Ended up on the Primrose website and blow me, who should turn up on the installation demo. Yep, that's right none other than "plumber Al". Well if it's good enough for you and Jan, then it's good enough for us too. Ordered our awning today so just need a hand to install it, are you busy at all next week Al? lol. Good demo by the way

I cant believe that you are selling this for 109 pounds. I just bought one that looks very much like it at a discount big box store in North Carolina for $300 American dollars. Which at the current exchange rate is 225 pounds.

Thanks for the vid always nice to see the job done. Just had mine delivered and preparing to fit. Just one point - the instructions don't give the fitting width of the brackets? I only have 2 brackets but am assuming just in from the end but before the sliding joint of the arm. On the 3.0m width it looks a rally narrow gap . You seem to have about a foot to play with. In the box at the moment mine looks like 0.5 of an inch either side.

Was wondering if those bolts were used in preference to the coach screws and plastic plugs provided? Also did you mention the 15 degree drop and the need to allow for the door to open below - so setting the awning up 300 - 500 mm above the door.

Mine has just gone bent and disjointed after 4 years...Something snapped and the end guards flew off...Handy man had done his best to retrieve arm with ended up over next doors garden and tried fold up and balance everything up... Can you let me know if anyone in South Wales repairs these... I phoned someone and they wanted £ 65 as a just a call out charge. I am not paying that...

Hi! I bought 2 identical awnings about 6 years ago. The material was shabby so I decided to get some new material sewn and replace. I also cleaned up the awnings and repainted the places where rust had set in. Yesterday I tried to reassemble the awnings and everything was fine until I wanted to shut them. The problem is with the articulated arms. The stif arms retract ok but when it comes to the spring loaded arms the mechanizm stops and you can't turn any further. I may think that it is something to do with the position of where the arms are mounted on the pole which goes through the awning. When dismateling I forgot to mark the position on the pole. Is there a measurent where the arms are supposed to be mounted onto the pole? Do they have to be exactly the same distance from the ends of the pole? Can you help at all? I hope so! Hi. Hope you can advise… So we bought a 3.5m XL half-cassette with 4m projection from Primrose. I’m slightly confused as I’ve opened it up tonight and there are 4 wall brackets. There is a packet of large bolt screws and plugs, enough for 4 wall brackets (8 bolts, 8 plugs) However there are no instructions stipulating the use of 4 wall brackets anywhere. The most Primrose mention in all the literature are either 2 or 3 wall brackets….? The bolts supplied are not expanding bolts either, so I’m wondering if I use no-nails with the supplied bolts/plugs would it be enough support given there are 4 wall brackets? Hope you can help with a bit of advice. Thanks.

Hello, nice video. I wondered about fitting a 2.5m or 3m (two brackets) awning on two existing concrete posts which are 190cm apart. Can the outside brackets be moved along the rail without obstructing the arms? In my case, either 30cm or 55cm in from outside edges. Thank you.

One question. Where I am mounting this awning I have a laminated beam that is quite thick but it is of course made of compressed wood. Can I mount this with simple lag blots that come in the package? They are 6 inch lag screws or for your part of the world about 15 cm. Will that work?

Hi Al, just a quick question i know its been a while you put up the awning, the total width including the end bits are 3.5 meter or the fabric is 3.5m plus the end bits will make it like 3.6m wide please ? i have exact space of 3.5m which will fit perfectly but if it is any wider than 3.5 i have to get 3m one. thanks in advance

solair awning [ about 20 yrs old ] motor will not retract...only goes down, not back up. I had to use the manual pole to get it back up....any ideas? I even changed out the switch....how can I fix it?

Hi I'd like to ask if it was a 14mm anchor bolt used ? Anchors didn't come with our awning, and cannot be got here in 14mm. Would 12mm bolts be enough to hold the 3m awning. Thanks Derek

Good video made me laugh when you dropped the nut and drilled the hole wrong.......classic mistake I'd make too......

Hi Al. i have just bought the same awning as you but a 4 meter one, could you possibly help me, i would like to install the canopy against a garage wall, the only trouble is its a single wall (with support pillars every four foot ) the wall was left up when i knocked my garage down, as a dividing wall from my neighbours. i was thinking of resting a joist on the pillars, (after i cut out a section in the pillar, then bolt the brackets through the joist and the wall with threaded rod) Any help apprieciated, Trev

Great Vid. Looking to buy a 2.5m cassette version but the website doesnt mention if I need any room on either side of awning to take into account the size of the cassette. I have 2.5 meters give or take a couple of centimeters so if its bigger than 2.5 meters with the cassette then it wont fit. Any ideas ? one side is the corner of the house and the other side is the main toilet pipe so really only about 5 cm wiggle room. Cheers
