Another informative lesson, Thanks Brian! As a PSA on the Switchbox, ALWAYS have a spare empty SwitchBox with you along with the spare switbox loaded with flyline you may use so the flyline that comes off your Reel has somewhere to go.......I speak from experience of forgettibg to bring a spare empty!!! Keep plenty in stock Brian!!!

Nice and easy. My chimp brain was staring at the loop to loop connection of my old fly line and dacron backing, and I was properly struggling to figure out how to proceed.

Well thats a hell of a lot easier than what i just did lol. Did it like a loop to loop and ran 80 foot of new line through the backing loop. That took about half an hour or more with all the knots that line made.

Or ... you could just carry spare spools already loaded up with the alternate lines. That would be quicker and easier to change when you're out fishing. It's a more expensive solution but to me the time is worth more than the money.

Some people have WAY more lines than reels or spools. On a given trip, Brian says he may take 3 reels and a few spools but maybe 10 lines. This is also probably more geared towards changing at home than on the water.

I have a question and I’m a complete rookie to fly fishing. I got my first rod reel combo last week and my son got the main fly line stuck in our ceiling fan and it snapped it about 2 feet from the leader. He tied it together using a knot he found online. I can’t seem to cast it more than 15-17 feet no matter how hard or soft I flick my wrist. I argue the knot disrupted the whole weight of the setup and the line needs to be cut off and attached back to leader without that extra knot in the middle. Can you confirm this would mess up the physics of my cast? Thank you! Love your videos!

The other way to do this is a LONG Bimini loop, and then you double it by tying two equal size double surgeons loops. That way it gives you four point loop to loop connection. I rig my tarpon rods this way.

This would be less expensive than keeping an extra spool loaded and ready.

Yes, but that’s also an option of course.

If someone were to like fishing big brown trout (24in+, 6lbs+) on 4/5 weights would you still recommend nail knot ?

So if the nail knot could be a issue for the backing knot couldn't it also be a problem in the leader section due to the shock from fish especially in salmon and steelhead or bigger fish
@Madriveroutfitters
@Madriveroutfitters Год назад
Different story, much different grab with mono vs. dacron.
@OregonFishingAdventures
@OregonFishingAdventures Год назад
@@Madriveroutfitters yeah mono makes sense cuz it has more stretch but what if your using flurocarbon leaders

So why does the nail knot connection between the backing and the fly line snaps but the same connection between the but section of the leader and the fly line is the best thing to do?
@Madriveroutfitters
@Madriveroutfitters Год назад
A few reasons. Backing cuts mostly, mono grips. Feel free to call Brian at the shop if any further questions.

Do u not use extra reel cassettes or spools?
@Madriveroutfitters

Sure!

😢why don't you have extra spools, for that reel 🤔. With different types of line. So that you can change out quicker, as you can get extra spools for the reel you buy " & have a spool case " , for different conditions 🤔.
@Madriveroutfitters
@Madriveroutfitters Год назад
With as many fly lines he has and uses, no way to afford that many spools. This is more geared towards changing lines for different trips so doesn’t have to be quick.
