Thanks Daniel, the main problem is that your 20 minutes videos involve hours and hours of study and thought for us to digest it.... :-) it's not a negative comment in any way of course, respect for all your hard work. F

My man I hear you! I have spent hundreds of hours on Dan’s vids. That’s the magic right there, Dan can condense all that into a short video that I find super easy to follow and digest. I find myself bottlenecked occasionally by techniques that I’m not great at but hey that’s what practice is for amirite!! Dan you need to consider changing your channel name to DanHawkinsBassWizardry……😀

Dan gives ten or more times what he is getting back. His Beginner to Bassist course is a prime example. A free twenty minute lesson from Dan will cost hundreds of dollars from an instructor at a local music store. He is extremely generous.

You have my respect for playing in covers bands - a lot of learning and high expectations! I used to play in barn dance bands back in the UK. It was similar in that it wasn't unusual if the first time I'd played with the band was live on stage in front of the audience but the advantage was there were almost never any prescribed basslines so even with unfamiliar tunes I could just hit the root notes with a danceable rhythm until I knew the piece (though that was usually expected to be second time through the tune).

It took me a long time to recognize that I didn't have to play every note heard on a recording when playing live. You have to play the key recognizable parts, but you can simplify and add your own flavor. Makes it easier to remember songs if you add your own bits.

I've been working with bands in my country where I stand near guitarist and watch his guitar neck and just go on with him. In that cases u can see of what u're made of, not to sound cocky but not so much players can do that. After gigs you are mentally exhausted, you must concentrate on every tone. So I rather preffer when there is time to do rehearsals. Great tips mate, very useful!

Many thanks, Larko!! I’ve actually never used that combination live or in the studio (I just use the Monique in the studio on its own). I bought the power amp after hearing it at a small gig. It was one of the best bass sounds I’ve ever heard so I bought a second hand one immediately. It’s there if I want it sometime in the future. A review/demo one day would be fun!

@Badz_B34chst4r Год назад
I find this a great concise summary of intro to playing bass in songs. Thank you Dan! My question is about your recommendation on playing minor pentatonic with rock songs. Do you mean rock songs are usually in minor keys so try to keep your bass line in minor pentatonic of the key the song is in or do you mean within the chord progression if say chord Am comes and we stick to notes of minor pentatonic in A, then chord D comes up and play again notes of minor pentatonic in D, etc, or something I can not imagine right now. Could you please clarify? Thanks in advance...
@OnlineBassCourses
@OnlineBassCourses Год назад
Thanks! I was making a huge generalisation which is to be taken with a pinch of salt. Lots of rock songs (and funk and pop) use the minor pentatonic scale. So learn it in all positions and you’ll be able to figure out the song quickly and memorise it easily because you know the shapes and sounds. Of course, you’ll then be able to improvise using it once you have the shapes down.
@hbriem
@hbriem Год назад
Roman numerals are used in classical and jazz harmony. The Nashville numbers system is actually when you use Arabic numerals instead of Roman. So a Nashville session musician might say to another, "it's a 1 4 6m 5" in A and they'll play "A D F#m E". Thanks for all your great content Dan.

Do you use some pedal effect to get this sound, like a compressor, for example? Nice video
@OnlineBassCourses
@OnlineBassCourses Год назад
Thanks, Juan. Nothing, just straight in with no EQ or compression although I think some of the tone on this bass is coming from Elites ground wound strings.

@OnlineBassCourses
@OnlineBassCourses Год назад
Great question. There are no rules at all with where you play but lower is generally what people want from a bass line. If it’s a written bass line you just move it as best you can to whatever key is called. Sometimes you have to adapt and that’s ok!

Hi, Itumeleng. It depends but normally flat to be honest. If I’m using my StingRay 5 I’ll boost mids a bit but it depends on the gig, the room size, and the bass.
