Excellent! Thank you for a simple editing lesson, and a very informative tutorial! Sometimes we can get bogged down with too many options. But this makes it much easier to do a quick edit. Thanks again!

Such a nice video tutorial. I've been using Lightroom for a while, and I am very happy to find your Darktable tutorial, because I tried to use it once with not much success. As a programmer, I rather keep myself on Linux environments. The OS performance is so much better, and was really noticeable when I was using a dual boot machine: Windows 10 vs Mint/Ubuntu just felt like two absolutely different computers. This gives now the opportunity to fully switch to a open source alternative and avoid dual boot or virtual machine. Thanks a lot!

Back in the day I used to spend about an hour on the photo sometimes, working with Photoshop Elements and using layers, painting on masks, dodge and burn tools, sharpen and blur etc. Then I took the plunge and subscribed to Adobe package and Lightroom was a godsend! A few moves of sliders and there we had a basic snap transformed into a “professionally” looking photo pretty much most of the time! However technical issues of late resulted in having to drop Adobe software (for now) and looking for alternatives. Darktable looks to be it. It may have a steeper learning curve and lack the immediacy advantage that Lightroom offers but with a bit of work and time spent learning the software it’s a great option to have, and at a zero cost. Thank you for a great tutorial.

This is very similar to my "workflow" (consider I'm an amateur). Good tips on the levels and tone curve. I will definitely try those. Thank you very much for sharing the knowledge!!

Hey Riley, Does any of your vids explain how to apply a change to multiple images as such in a timelapse images? Thanks
@RileyBrandt
@RileyBrandt 6 лет назад
You can copy the History Stack from one image and apply it to many in the Lighttable view: www.darktable.org/usermanual/en/history_stack.html
@MrBorderman01
@MrBorderman01 6 лет назад
Thanks Riley. So this would be the same as what u have in Lightroom with the sync images features where once one photo has been touched u select all the rest of the images to apply the same effect.

Thank You Riley for the introduction video's to Darktable. Question: I imported my Rawfiles via an USB drive from an other computer, but I want to change the naming on a new system. Is it possible to delete the old database of filenames and start again? I use Darktable on Linux Mint system (18) but I realy can"t detemine where the database is and how to delete it. Could You help me out? Regards, DutchTugMaster

That isn't something I ever tried. But, I know there has been a lot of talk about it on the darktable mailing list. I suggest searching the archives: www.mail-archive.com/darktable-user@lists.darktable.org/

Thanks Riley. At 1:02 minute when you select "exposure", you get this "tee-pee" kind of window that I don't get. Also it adjusts only the highlights but for me it adjusts all the image exposure. Can you explain ? Thanks.
@RileyBrandt
@RileyBrandt 5 лет назад
Hi Gilles, you need to right-click on the exposure module to get the "tipi". The exposure module effect the entire image (unless you are using a mask), not just the highlights.

Any views on Darktable V/s Raw Therapee. Nice tutorial btw.
@RileyBrandt
@RileyBrandt 2 года назад
If I recall correctly, Raw Therapee didn't have selective editing. I couldn't make adjustments locally, to one part of a photo, only globally. That was a deal breaker for me. Have this changed over the years?

Darktable and Adobe Lightroom are fantastic software. But to use it your eyes must be 20/20 and your body in their 20s. The menu text is way to small for someone older than that. At 3 or 4 pts. my eyes have to strain to use it. Thank god we have other softwares like GIMP to use for RAW format images.

darktable is good if you have no money for lightroom , it litterly does the same as lightroom
@LZ2SM
@LZ2SM 5 лет назад
If that is simple stuff,then I better not shoot raw at all
@ma3xiu1
@ma3xiu1 4 года назад
Shoot both raw and JPEG. The JPEG out of the camera will normally be reasonable, and if you later want to learn how to process raw files, you'll have all your old images in raw form to experiment with.

Unfortunately the presenter zips his tiny black cursor around so fast it is extremely difficult to see what he is doing. I had to review parts of the video over and over to figure out what could have been presented by moving a visible cursor at a viewable pace. The presentation can be easily and significantly enhanced by allowing the cursor to be seen.
