Too much rear has been my bad habit. These videos are a great help to realize my errors. My last accident was a braking emergency on the freeway. I went down before I impacted another vehicle. I think I went down because I looked down and that saved me from smashing into a car who stopped on the freeway because a big spool flew off a trailer. Full gear, no injuries. Broken clutch lever and a scratched windshield. It could have been much worse

This video just saved my life, literally. I hadn't been on a bike in 20+ years and once I started riding again about a year ago, I watched this video (subsequently subscribed and watched a lot of your videos) and made a habit to practice short, panic stops. Well, this morning on my way to work, a young girl stopped very suddenly in front of me. I was able to squeeze the brake without grabbing it and manage the foot brake without high siding. Not enough distance, (my fault most likely) so I still hit her, but am definitely alive and not all busted up. Thanks.

Today, I was riding in the right, slow lane, and a car was in the left lane. All of sudden I see the car making a last-minute change into the right lane, making me swerve and to emergency brake. Still managed to drop my bike and I having minor cuts and bruises. However, as you advocate all the time here, I was wearing my full gear - armoured jacket, gloves, riding boots, and full-face helmet. Even though the bike dropped, it suffered very little damage. With the help of some "Good Samaritans" who just happened to own a bike repair shop, they fixed the minor repairs on my bike such as my handlebars were slightly bent and they straightened them for me along with adjusting my headlight and turn signals. They are really amazing people who are U.S. Military Veterans such as myself. Shout out to Thunder Alley Dundee in Clovis, New Mexico. I appreciate everything they have done for me.

I had to stop fast this weekend to avoid crashing into a person and I stalled. Not the end of the world except I was middle of a railway crossing and there was train coming pretty close! I'm still here which means I managed to start my bike and get out of the way... But my story illustrates why one should practice emergency stop until it becomes a reflex - and why it is important not to stall.

Thanks for all of your videos, I've learned a lot from them! I'm a new rider and practice emergency braking every time I ride. In the MSF course, we practiced from 20 MPH in 2nd gear downshifting to 1st, braking, and coming to a complete stop. But what do you do if you're in 6th gear and have to brake in an emergency? Do you shift down 5 gears as fast as possible while braking? Or is it more important to simply get the bike stopped? I understand why you want to be in 1st gear when you come to a complete stop but it seems like a lot to do all at once...brake hard and downshift five times as fast as possible. Thanks again for all the great videos!EDIT: Maybe it's in this video here...I'll go check it out! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-rT3dTUoUlS0.html

You're welcome! Keep in mind, if you're going more than 30mph, swerving will be your better option over braking...but the same thing applies if you're in 6th gear and decide to stop...same technique. Sure, if you can downshift to 1st before stopping, do it...but if you had to pick, stopping before you hit the car or kid is #1 priority.

The problem is you see a thousand videos of people locking up the front and the bike violently bodyslamming itself, and as a new rider it makes you terrified of pulling the front brake too hard. I lock up my rear all the time accidentally but at least I'm starting to get a real good feel for when it locks up, and it seems like it's only slightly more effective than engine braking. I cover the front brake and baby it (just enough) to do the necessary stopping when the rear doesn't cut it. Emergency stopping at 20 miles an hour is fine - daily lanesplitting basically requires it. What I'm worried about is stopping as short as possible at 70 miles an hour, and how am I supposed to practice that? - I've only tried once out of necessity (on the freeway in the right side fast pass lane) and I remember the moment I realized that if I didn't squeeze harder I was going to crash, so I squeezed just hard enough to stop about 2 feet from the car in front of me. My first thought was I wish I could have practiced that before it happened.
@MotoJitsu
@MotoJitsu 5 лет назад
Why not watch videos of people practicing really good braking instead of crashing videos? lol if I'm going 70mph, I'm not going to do emergency braking...I'll swerve. Pretty much anything over 30mph, swerving will be your better option.
@TaskSwitcherify
@TaskSwitcherify 5 лет назад
Then can start on a bicycle - the same technique applies :-)
@Surpriseify
@Surpriseify 5 лет назад
The technique is the same, no matter the speed. I'v taken my bike to 200kmh and practiced stopping as fast as i can. I agree your better option is to swerve, but i'v had situations on the autobahn where both lanes suddenly were blocked, gotta say i was happy that i had practiced stopping at high speed. Start out easy and do it many times, the bike wont suddenly do something strange, completely the same as when done at 30mph.
@Rgh71fish

#1 priority is to not hit the car that pulled out in front of you...practice stopping really fast first. Then, learn to always be back in first before you stop...for quick or normal stopping.

Had a wakeup call yesterday riding on hwy 1 along the coast near Point Reyes with a buddy. We were just leaving a 35 mph zone on the last turn before a straight away. I was following several bike lengths behind him and he hit the gas as he completed the turn. His bike has loud pipes, which spooked a deer standing in the bushes on the right side of the road, which promptly darted out into the roadway only 15 feet in front of me. I was probably doing about 35 mph. Luckily I was still covering both brakes as I exited the turn, but probably used too much rear brake because the rear end started fishtailing a bit. I was on a 600 lb Honda Shadow Sabre 1100. As luck would have it, the skidding sound of my rear wheel caused the deer to reverse it's tracks just before I would have made impact, so nothing happened other than me having to change my shorts! Time for more parking lot practice drills, which is why I reviewed your video again. Thanks so much for all your great videos.

My neck hurt first, then my shoulder and hip, but now my shoulder is still hurting bad. I am thankful to God this happened to me today in the school rather than on the actual roads. Great video! Would you be able to make a video on how to slow down before and in corners, and stand up the bike? I've seen it before in Mulholland rider videos where someone wipes out in a corner and the rider behind immediately has to go from knee down to standing. I'd be very curious to see how that's done quickly! As a new rider, I know it's hard to stop before corners like this as you often can't stop suddenly since you'll just end up going straight. I learned what you said about the hard way by grabbing the brake (didn't think I could make it, saw traffic in oncoming lane), ended up going down. I know the solution in this case was to slow down gradually and try and make the corner and I likely would have, but what if there were debris in the corner?

I'm gonna start practicing this technique as soon as I get my new license for the increased size of bike I'm riding (in Sweden we have three different motorcycle licenses). I cannot practice this yet though because if I get used to doing it this way (allowing the rear to bounce up a little) I would most certainly fail my driver's test. In the Swedish driver's test for motorcycle, you have to be able to stop quickly, effectively, and *controlled* (emphasis on controlled) from 50, 70 and 90km/h. They do not consider letting the rear wheel lift off of the ground to be a controlled way of braking.

One more tip we learnt on emergency braking without ABS is not to pull the clutch during the stop. It is amazing to see the effects it has on preventing the rear wheel from skidding. Your thoughts 💭
@MotoJitsu

The clutch has nothing to do with anything...and you always want to be in first gear with the clutch in when you come to a stop just in case the person behind you is texting or whatever and can't stop....you're ready to always take off.
