How to QUIET a squeaky belt

Belt squeal, squeaky belt, or belt noise? Learn how to quiet a squeaky belt in your car.
I show you how to temporarily quiet the belt using WD40 so that you can drive to the parts store without the annoying squeal. The serpentine belt in your car powers the accessories such as air conditioning, power steering, the alternator, fan, and waterpump. There are three types of serpentine belt wear, pilling, glazing, and abrasion. Pulley wear will cause your pulley to squeak. A worn out pulley bearing or a worn spring in the tension pulley can also cause squeaking.

A belt transfers power through friction. If friction is reduced, power transmission is also reduced. This can cause overheating (slow water pump or fan), insufficient AC, insufficient charging or electrical power, loss of power steering. A belt makes noise when misaligned or slipping. Lubrication just causes the slipping to increase and usually drives any noise up in frequency so we don't hear it. Lubrication is counterproductive in any belt type friction drive. Belt dressings are usually either an adhesive formula to increase friction temporarily or a lubricant. Neither one fixes the problem and usually end up making a mess to be cleaned up.

Sound from my car went after 2 n half month drive and every garage said to change the belt. Actually they misfixed it . They told me multiple reason like the 3 bearings has gone or change the belt, put original mercedes belt. Trust me dude just, ask the garage to re-fit the belt. Do it 3-4 times, automatically the sound goes away if only the belt is the problem.

There is a product called DOOR EASE and comes in the form of a wax-like crayon and is housed in a metal tube. It was designed to quiet hinge squeaks and all you have to do is apply a very small amount to the contact side of the belt (Vee, or ribbed) and the best part is that it doesn't evaporate and actually improves the belt life and lasts a long time. You can get this product at most real hardware stores and it is inexpensive, too.

First you have to check where the squealing is coming from. If it's continuous, or rises and falls with slow changes in engine speed - it might not be the belt itself. If it's intermittant and only occurs when you blip the throttle - especially when starting from cold and a lot of power is going into the alternator - it's more likely to be the belt friction surface and a light spray of WD40 will change the friction coefficient just enough to eliminate the noise. It does this by tending to break down any glazing and as it evaporates away very quickly it leaves a "stickyer" surface. Because you are only using a light spray, it only affects the suface to a depth of probably only a few molecules with no measurable effect on the strenghth of the belt itself.

The WD-40 dries up quickly, but while it is wet it dissolves some of the glaze that has built up on pulley or belt, leaving a rougher surface. The squeal is caused by glazed surfaces slipping past each other.

Ive been chasing down what I and my professional mechanic friends naturally assumed was a slipping alternator/fan belt. Upon starting there was this horrible screeching sound and the volt meter would sag until the screeching stopped which might be 2 or up to 20 seconds. After pursuing every possible solution including changing the alternator (and adding tiny teeth to its pulley with channellock pliers) the problem persisted...tho every remedy seemed to make the screech go away for awhile. You know what it was? On this engine (3.2 litre Isuzu v6 used on rodeos and troopers mid 90s) the pulleys are press fit onto the harmonic balancer and can work loose. The screech was metal on metal. Pulley slipping on the balancer. Tightening the belt (by itself or when you replaced the alternator) increased side loading of the pulley which diminished the slippage for a short time and led you to believe you were on the right track fixing it. My mechanic buddies had never seen this but apparantly the gurus at planetisuzu forums say its common.

I have tried wd40, silicone spray and candle. Wd40 works for 1 day only. Noise comes back after 1 day. Silicone spray same as well. However, by rubbing candle onto the belt and let the wax melt into the belt while idling, works like a charm!! It has been many days already and the belt is quiet and never reapplied the candle except that one time. Cheaper and works. Will replace belt soon but this buys me more time to shop online and wait for delivery. Try it. Only cost pennies.

My Dad once used belt dressing on his 2003 Dodge Ram. It only made it worse. It sounded awful. He was using a rag and some lacquer thinner to clean it off while running it. I do not recommend doing that because one slip and there goes your fingers!! I once used belt dressing on my car (one I no longer have) and it did not make any horrible noises. The best thing to do is if you can't live with horrible noises, replace the belt. Then it won't drive you insane. If you want to drive other people insane, the belt dressing is worth the chance.

Hi Chris, you do know WD40 is not too be sprayed on rubber? I know you only sprayed a small amount, but some people watching the vid might go overboard and spray an entire can on the belt, which will dry and destroy the belt. WD40 is designed to suck up moisture (a wet spark plug) for example. I've often found the squealing sound is from pulley bearings, and WD40 is a great fix. Maybe tell people not to go nuts spraying a belt. Keep the vids coming, you've got a great channel.

Just spread two or three inches of anti-seize on both sides of the serpentine belt and start the car. Repeat if squeal doesn't go away. If two treatments doesn't work, problem may be elsewhere. Bryan Young yep. In the farthest dark reaches of the supply cabinet. Thats how often most people require a water displacing solvent(usually for a wet distributer, a part most cars dont even have any more) The ignorant have long promoted it as a do all solution to all lubrication, corrosion prevention and parts loosening needs. It does none of those as well as products purpose designed and in many cases (use when long lasting grease is spec'd) using it is worse than doing nothing. (What little grease that was there gets removed by the solvent properties of wd which dries out in a week leaving a dry mechanism) Add in the fact it smells positively ghastly and the good mechanic has no use for it. For a spray lube use white lithium spray grease. (Ironically wd40 brand is the best on the market due to their new sprayer design which dispenses with the abyssmal red tubes) For a penetrant pb blaster is awesome. For anticorrosion that depends on application. There is a food safe wax like product that is good for years. Light weapons oil lasts for months. If you are lazy and insist on a one product solution castrol syntec makes a spray oil that rocks and smells like honey. If you can find it. In summary I bash wd40 because the only people using it are ignorant amateurs or lazy. Oh and NAPA sells a great belt dressing.

I then borrowed my wife's poultry skewer from the kitchen drawer (couldn't find my awl right away), turned the belt so that the grooves were facing the outside of the belt. I then proceeded to dig out approximately 287 itty bitty little stones that were partially embedded in the bottom of each of the grooves along the length of the belt. I replaced the belt and the noise was gone. Just something to try before spending a lot of money on parts. Also, It might be a good idea to use something that didn't come from the kitchen - just sayin'.

DO NOT spray your belt with WD40!!!! The only reason why you could spray your belt with WD40 is if you KNOW your belt is the cause of the squeak. If you don’t know where the squeak is coming from DON’T do it. WD40 will cause the rubber on the belt to decay and rot faster. If you know the belt is the issue and you’re going to replace it asap after the fact then this is an okay option. Personally I would rather use a bar of soap on the bottom ribs of the belt or a deodorant stick. Preferably bar soap. You may have to apply the soap more often than the deodorant stick but the deodorant stick has more potential to collect dust on your belt.

I just watched a video on how adding belt dressing or any petroleum product makes the belt worse the reason why the belt squeals or chirps is because it's wet and needs to be cleaned off so you have to take the serpentine belt off and clean each pulley with carb cleaner and with a tooth brush clean in between them.

By the way great looking intake manifold. That must be old enough of an engine so that it is metal rather than plastic. I have already replaced mine 3 times over the span of 10 years. I typically run a car till they won't go any further.

WD40 has silicone in it, which will usually cause the belt to squeal worse than before, after a minute or so. Chris, I notice that you steer a lot of folks toward replacing the tensioner, when in most cases, it is just a bad belt. When serpentine belts lose tension, it is because they have either stretched to the end of the tensioner mechanical stop, or there is corrosion where the tensioner pivots and it cannot react quickly to changing load demands from the accessory pulleys. For me, I turn the engine off and run my fingernails on the ribbed side of the belt - if it is hard or cracked, it is in need of replacement. WD40 is great for diagnosing a bad belt, but won't fix the squeal. I have found that a few drops of power steering or transmission fluid on the belt actually works better for quieting an old dry belt for a few days.

Did you watch this video? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-AEUe6uKxTv8.html I just try to give the facts and explain what could cause the problem. Thanks for the tips!

Its odd as it sort of sounds like a small bearing having a squeek :-) The number one sound i hear is the alternator belt having a screeeeeeem after someone has just started there car, so so common. I know its eather a worn or loose belt, and the semi discharged battery giving the alternator a hard day lol. I enjoy your vids chris :-))

So i recently had a serpentine belt change and I hear squealing from a belt. I originally thought the belt was too loose, so the garage tightened it (and all other belts), however issue still persists. I then go to thinking if its a pulley, which I still suspect might be, but this video gave me pause to maybe it is simply needing a bit of WD40. My squeak is not as severe as in the video and only happens at low revs or while turning so I suspect it could just be that.

WD-40 is petroleum based and will break down the rubber in the belt. If you have a squeaky engine belt, it's because it needs to be adjusted for tension.

Not recommended for 2 reasons: wd40 contains a light oil as well- that will modify friction required to turn the accessories like AC compressor - they may start to slip and not function correctly. 2: this will leave oil on the pulleys which then contaminates the new belt when you put it on- could cause new belt to dry out faster/squeak/slip - just live with the squeak until you can replace the belt

Sprayed too much WD40 on my Voyager belt and it flipped off! Had to use a spanner with the empty socket of my ratchet screwdiver jammed on the end to get a long enough lever on the tensioner. I now have no fear of serpentine belts. My brother in law sprayed a silicon "treadmill belt" lubricant only onto the grooved side and the squeak would go completely, but then come back after a few seconds as the fluid dried off. To me this confirms at least that it was a surface rubbing noise rather than squeaky bearings. It now has a worse, louder "chirp" than ever which I'm guessing means that the fluid has left a sticky residue which is improving the grip?
@chrisfix
@chrisfix 9 лет назад
JamesBolivar DiGriz If it got louder it could be that the tensioner pulley is weak and needs replacing because there is not enough spring tension on the belt.

The wearing out of the belt was becoming visible and i had it replaced by another after market brand cheaper one bando and am still using it after more than a year. In my country the original mitsuboshi one cost near a 1000 roupies at toyota agency and the bando one cost about 450 roupies depending where you get it from. Just a quick bit of information, I personally wouldn't recommend using WD40 or any amount of lubricant on a serpentine belt because the belt needs tension to function correctly. If you lubricate the belt, yes, it will stop the squeak, but it will not only cover up the problem instead of fixing it, it may lead to a larger problem (belt may slip off). Anyways, to each is their own, if you REALLY want to fix a squeak go for it. Just be careful :)
@abdelkabiranouar81
@abdelkabiranouar81 2 года назад
I'm totally agree with you. But if you spray just on the belt and the squeak is gone that's mean the belt needs tension. If the squeak continue then you need to check the pulleys.
