Employer when your future applications call them "he was a terrible employee and failed to give notice when he quit for no reason" The places you apply to" *throws resume into trash*
@@deusvult6920 A) if your job was so toxic they you felt they didn't deserve notice at all in the first place, they were never going tio give you a good reference regardless of whether you gave notice or not. And B) if the new job calls your former employer, hears that kind of straight badmouthing as a reference as tosses your application without hearing your side of the story as well, they are likely just as bad as the old job and have saved you a lot of time from being wasted in your career path
Nah, always make them fire you when possible, that way if it's wrongful termination or a toxic work environment you can either sue or get unemployment. I never did either but looking back I could have millions right now from s3×ual harassment, gender bias and wage theft.
Every time I gave notice I was treated like a slave, given crap jobs, or treated with hostility. When I quit and walked out, I never had problems finding new employment.
Yep. We workers do not understand our power and we have been scared into lies and towing the line for abusive employees. There's ALWAYS a job out there.
No good deed goes unpunished. Had the same issue when I worked at the casino of service of 7 years. They treated me like crap and HR was the most useless with my supervisors interest so I left because of how soulless they were. I gave them my 2 weeks notice even though it went against my better judgment but I did like an idiot. Won’t make that mistake again especially if they don’t deserve a notice
@neal cassady no. I'm older than 12, however I'm proficient at my job and don't have to deal with abuse from an employer. Treat me right and I'll treat you right.
@@red2g - Well, when I quit my last job they had replaced my old manager with a new guy that was both sexist and racist and was really super critical of everyone for anything. This new guy spent 10 minutes berating me about something someone else had done ... he just kept going on and on even when he was informed that it was not my responsibility. I just got fed up and quit on the spot and walked out.
I once quit a job during my lunch break. I once quit a job at the beginning of my ten minute break. I emailed my resignation on my way home on the bus. I once quit a job right before the beginning of my shift. In each case I had left a hostile and toxic work environment.
The irony that as workers we have to give notice as a professional courtesy, especially to get a good reference, yet employers can terminate you without notice has always been mind boggling to me.
Yeah I'm starting to question this whole reference bullshit too. I have enough credentials and skillset to do the job. If you're worried about my interpersonal skills, then interview me. Take it or leave it. I left my previous employers for a good reason, and I'm sure as hell not begging them to have my back because clearly they didn't have my back when I actually worked for them. If you can't make a decision on whether to hire me based on talking to me, then I will go apply elsewhere. I'm done with this references crap.
@@AlexeiArntzen References are bullshit. When I was a supervisor at Borders I was told to never give a response one way the other to potential employers calling for a reference, and that it was standard practice in the retail industry to refuse to do so. Besides, the only reference that would really matter is most likely the one entity you don't want knowing that you're job hunting.
@@EddyOfTheMaelstrom nope but sometimes the business owners/operators know each other or call and check references, then you're screwed. Doesn't stop me tho.
I quit a job on the spot. After being there for 14 hours when I was only supposed to be there for 8, those assholes told me I could finally go home but I had to clock out first THEN countdown my section which would have taken about 45 minutes. I took off the apron, handed it to them, and left without a word. Done.
fuck them for trying to make you work off the clock. 14hrs is fine, i love overtime, but asking you to clock out and give them another hours is not only bullshit but actually illegal.
Early in my career I worked in a really hostile environment. The manager would fire experienced employees on a whim and then just rehire them back. It was during a recession so he got away with it I obtained a job that paid quite a bit more plus had commission. I was going to give a week's notice but the manager was so rude I said I was leaving immediately. He said I was required to give 2 weeks notice. I reminded him that Virginia was an at will state and either party could terminate employment at a moment's notice. I also asked if he gave employees 2 weeks notice when he fired them. His face turned so red it was all I could do not to laugh.
Also have your two week notice in your pocket anytime you go looking for a raise and make sure your boss sees it. If you don't get the pay raise that you were looking for, you pretty much have to quit. If you stay after being denied a raise, from then on your boss will look at you like somebody he can walk on and get away with it. You will receive no respect from there on out
I just told them I was job searching and asked if they could be a reference I had great reputation in my office and field… once they called for reference check I was offered a miraculous raise Because they knew I was in demand for my skills I was sure to interview like every other year
My experience when leaving a job its bc bad treatment and not offered good pay and work burnout. The 2 weeks just makes them treat you worse. Just leave bad toxic work environments. They dont value your courtesy.
Don't tell an employer you are interviewing with that you will leave your job today to start work with them. They will assume you will do that to them.
And if a job you've interviewed for wants you to start right away without giving notice to your current employer, remind them of that down the road when it's time to move on from them.
Every employer needs to start assuming that their employees can do that to them. You give me compensation for the value I bring to you, and if you piss me off, I WILL leave and someone else will pay me instead. You need to value YOURSELF because no one else will
I had an interview once I didn't even tell them about the jobs I just walked out of I just told him I had a few temp jobs but nothing full time. I was Hired.
Every job I've interviewed for, it's been a conversation of "when can you start?" Obviously earlier is better, but they won't complain too much about 2 weeks. I usually say about a week and a half out. Give time for the background check and drug test, hiring documents to go through, etc, give a reasonable amount of notice to your old employer (if they deserve it), etc. Never had an issue with that policy. I am always worried about employers who are pushing to get you to start the next day or the next Monday. They are either aggressively understaffed, which is likely to be a pretty toxic work environment, or they are using high pressure sales tactics to get you to say yes, which means that you are less likely to make a good decision about your new job. Starting in the 10-14 days out range eliminates or manages most all problems, and keeps everyone happy, from your old manager, to the new, to you.
Where did you work? I don't mean what company, I mean what industry. My sister worked in a medical facility and people were being laid-off. People discovered that they were out of a job when security came to escort them out of the building. It's standard in a field where the employees have access to sensitive, personal information about patients, or clients, say in a law firm. It's to keep disgruntled ex employees from messing with the files and such, as that has been an issue for employers in the past.
@@Lutherson1962 what did it used to mean? Maybe if jobs gave raises that would at least match inflation (even pre-covid they never did), then people wouldn't quit without notice.
@@UndeadChallenges not in the US, employees not under a specific contract with notice both ways can always just quit. In some parts of Europe and in Canada yes, but, in Canada at least, you better be special and hard to replace or they'll be laughed out of court (also if the working environment wasn't good they also have no case).
You're doing a great thing by posting these videos. so many people aren't aware of their rights. I even feel "triggered" from some of the things you say, not because of you but because it makes me so mad hearing about what some employers do to people. Thank you for everything you do to help people.
Yep. It's about respect, and you can give as much or as little notice as they've earned. In one memorable circumstance I gave like 6 weeks notice because they were trying to promote me and I was going back to college. They appreciated not wasting time training me for the new role, and gave me plenty of hours for the rest of my time there.
Only one job has ever earned a courtesy notice of me quitting and it wasn't the company itself but to notify my coworkers so that I didn't leave them with a dumpster fire.
I left my last job to care for my dying husband but he was in hospice and really didn’t need me. His mind was gone and after 45 years of marriage he did not know me. The real reason l left without notice was the work environment with an office manager who knew nothing about being fair to the office staff while piling most of the work load on me.😡
Especially in at-will states. Most places will claim you're ineligible to get hired back if you don't work your two weeks, as if anyone wants to work at a shithole that actually has to harp on such a detail.
I doubt that would be a problem - if someone's leaving a job because they dislike it intensely, it's highly unlikely they will want to go back in the first place - there is a reason why people leave such organisations - it's usually down to their bosses !
I’ve had relatively good managers at my jobs who (after a few months) treated me with respect. After putting in my two weeks notice, they told me they appreciated me leaving courteously and that enabled me to put them as a reference in the future. Obviously this wouldn’t work for every boss, but sometimes doing something to help out your managers and coworkers can also help you in the future.
@wwjccsd nope, personnel reasons. In fact 1 dude tried to come back a month later but we'd already filled his position. The manager in question is by far the best manager I've ever had in 25 years of working.
Mine simply said “Dear Xyz, I am resigning my position with abc effective immediately.” Then they offered me a large severance package that I declined, I sued them, then retired at 52 a few months later with the settlement. You have to be smarter than your employer folks, especially if they’re breaking laws. Good luck all!
Now, one of my coworkers said if you walk out of a health care patient contact job. They can get you for pt abandonment. I told her I've walked out of so many hospitals and been just fine. I don't give a shyt. I'll leave anywhere. The jobs can suck it from the back
Two weeks notices are for employers who earned it. Couldn't have put it any better. You leave because a better opportunity came up, but you still liked where you used to work. This is good if the new job falls through. This happened to me. I left, but on the way out, my branch manager literally said to me he was "losing one of his best guys" by me leaving, acknowledging that I was making a better move for myself and there was nothing more he could do. I was proud of that. I left on good terms. And the new job didn't work out, either. I quit after a week, and without notice, as I had zero intention of staying. Months later, my old job offered me a new opportunity with much better pay. The whole branch actually got a pay bump after I left because upper management realized they were losing too many good people. If you have no intention of ever coming back on the other, then don't give a two weeks notice. Don't give them that honor.
In the middle of this right now. Company wants me to commute 5 hours at a cost thats higher than my daily wage. Not to mention a toxic work environment 😂 if all goes well ill be free by tomorrow ✌️
I once walked out in the middle of a closing shift when I was the only one there who knew how to close. Moral of the story don't string people on about raises
I’m this person; if you treat me well and i feel good, respected, understood, I’m going to respect you and your time/value you gave me. But if you treat me like I’m less than, I’m going to show you why you should have treated your staff better
Thanks Ryan!! Thank you separating to use wise judgment!! I definitely understand the one part where it’s unsafe and it feels hostile environment! And I like how you put examples together from the beginning of this short!!! Extremely helpful!! I’m about to get ready to take flight with my wings here soon to move forward and gain experience as well wealth of continuing education in my career and growth. Especially to earn more because now I have my experience so I can make more than where I am now…I want to properly learn and grow from the education you provided Ryan!! Thanks again Ryan!!❤️🙏☺️💯
When I left my last employer for my current employer I gave them like a month and a half notice. I felt comfortable doing this because I had a good working relationship with my bosses and I knew that I was safe for that time anyway: I was one of only two people in the company supporting a finicky client, and the other person (my direct supervisor) called me while I was filling out my acceptance paperwork to tell me that she'd just put her notice in. But in our industry you want to be really careful about those bridges. Someone could be your boss today but tomorrow could be working for you due to the way people move around.
I love your videos, so many people don't know about their rights at work and giving really straightforward analysis of common situations. I'd love to see you cover unions and the rights you can get when you have a union at work versus a non-union workplace
I got screwed out of unemployment because I wrote too basic a resignation letter, I didn't specify the reason for quitting which was because the work environment was unsafe and my concerns were being laughed off
This is ALWAYS one sided. I live in Oregon which is an at-will state so i can be fired any day and i can quit any day. Yet when a company does it without notice it's a "business decision." So when I took a new job paying me 47% more than my previous one (after working really hard to "prove I could handle more responsibility" like my boss told me to), my boss asked me for 4 weeks. I gave him 2 weeks as a courtesy and told him (with HR CC'd) that I'd be willing to stay for a couple weeks more if they paid me my new salary. I argued the opportunity cost was too much. Sorry, it was just a business decision.
Plus, don’t feel obligated by their trap to include why you are leaving. There is not reason to include why you are leaving. My own boss tried to make me say why I was leaving in my resignation letter. Just say when you are leaving.
I quit my previous job, told them i was done & i quit. Got a letter in the mail from them in case i tried to get unemployment and "terminated due to job abandonment" was what they checked and claimed to terminate me when that was never the case.
I've always given a two week notice. My coworkers don't need to be short staffed regardless of how I may feel about my supervisor or the job itself. Plus, I prefer to be the better man in that situation.
it shows class and professionalism because the only ones you are hurting is your former coworkers and your reputation should you meet that former boss..... as the hiring manager at a future job (and yes, executives from different companies do chat)
or you can treat them like a family member or friend you have a falling out with- turn off your phone and don't go back. Eventually they will get the hint and leave you alone.
Yes, someone understands. You have to earn my 2 weeks notice. If you promise me full time and give me part time I’m just going to walk out one day. Fuck the place I work
Last job that I literally just quit did that to me. I put up with that and workplace bullying for 8 months. I handed my apron and keys and all I said was “yea”. The manager looked so pissed.
Employers don't bother giving YOU 2 weeks notice before they fire you for some dumb bs. I've never worked a notice but once. The one time I tried ro, they screwed with me the entire time.
I love your content!!! What if you give your 2 week notice b/c you found a new job, but at the end of the 2 weeks the new job says they can't have you start for another yr due to their own internal issues? Now I have NO job 😭
Might as well just leave the company. If they're bad enough, they're gonna figure out a way to screw you out of PTO and any other benefits that should be coming to you. Be aware of your rights as an employee.
Why is it expected for employees to give a 2 weeks notice before quitting, but not expect for companies to give a 2 weeks notice before firing an employee?
So far all of my employers have all been respectful, never quit a job before but I would do the 2 week notice as long as they have been respectful to me which all my employers have but I wouldn’t be suprised if they are mean and I still get them a 2 week notice cuz it’s respectful
I've read in some areas that if an employer can prove that your leaving (without notice) has caused monetary harm to the business, they can come after you for damages. I don't know how common this is or if it's easy on them to prove, but it is something I am wary of.
Don’t forget to use all of your sick leave on the final days or hours of your notice because your employer will pay your vacation hours off but not your sick pay unless you use it. Use it all up, and after that, give the exact time & date of your last hour as an employee. Remember you can use ANY EXCUSE for using sick pay. The best excuse is “mental anguish” which of course, they caused.
That’s exactly what I did. Sun and Monday my last sick days. Tue-Thur my vacation. Friday I worked. Saturday today…I resigned ✌️and I didn’t give a 2 week notice before I resigned because they didn’t deserve it 🤷🏿♂️
Had this horrible job which involved overseeing very harardous chemicals. My manager and her boss made it crystal clear they didn't have my back (or my team's for that matter). I gave them a day notice before starting a new job that paid 20k more
I liked your tweet that was something like "2 weeks notice is for employers who have earned it, assholes deserve to be short staffed" about a year ago I quit a job and gave 1 week notice only because the cool manager was out on vacation, the owner was a dick. I gave enough notice so the cool manager wouldn't have to shorten their vacation. the owner was lucky the manager was on vacation or I would have quit the day he yelled at me for not paying attention when I knew every detail of what happened before he opened his mouth.
Giving notice can be a good idea if you might want to work for that company again in the future, or if you're in an industry where management moves around a lot too, and you don't want to burn bridges.
Nowadays, if you give notice companies will walk you out the door the same day. Most companies are not loyal to their employees. Find a new job and quit one day before you start the new one
I've also been told that if you don't give two weeks notice the company won't hire you again if you decide to try to reapply for that job. I don't know if there's a legal reason behind that but I personally know that that's not necessarily true. You just need to wait long enough until the company forgets you. When I came to orientation no one actually realized that I had worked there four years prior until they looked at their paperwork and realize my old email was still in their system. I still currently work there.
Well, as a manager, we have to fill out forms and bad employees are put in no hire zone. So I still have documents dating back years and some try to come back. Hell no I didn't forget
so I am Canadian, and I’ve seen a couple of your videos. Out here in the great old frigid north, I’ve left jobs with more than enough time not enough time, and less than an hours notice. (New job said now or never for a 9$ an hour increase) I’m just wondering, who still needs to know this shit. Honest question.
weirdly enough when i left my last employer to join up with my current one, my new employer demanded i give my previous employer two weeks notice. Was an interesting time
It's weird no one ever gives the caveat that it makes you ineligible for rehire which means if there is ever a background check from a new employer they will hear that.
My favorite was when a former employer fired me on the day I was going to resign, because the owner found out and ego. I was also the last of 2 people who ever worked there that understood how a core part of their software worked, and I was willing to write out docs to help them and all, but instead they wanted me to leave immediately, which made it so they had to do a ground up rewrite of the software, costing the company millions for the rebuild. Pro Tip: Don't let your ego/emotions/self importance get in the way of business.
Ima be real. I’ve seen so many places treat employees last 2 weeks like dirt. There’s a reason with both my previous jobs I just quit and said don’t worry about my upcoming shifts I won’t be there
Everywhere I worked, the minute you resigned the guards gave you 5 minutes to get your stuff in a box, then took your badge and escorted you out the gate.
I found my employer opened an acquisition to replace me, my manager is a work place bully, I had to miss two days for a medical emergency and she is replacing me. When her boyfriend at work had an accident on the way to work and had injured his back she held his job for months. He moves furniture so being able to move your back is a big deal. I got my mouth busted then thought I was having a heart attack but the DR said panic attack from hostile work environment. She screams at me, belittles me and bought everyone new work chairs even though I was the only one to request a new one as mine was broken. When I asked where my new chair was she told me I was too fat and I would just break it.
Understand that if you don’t your employer will document that. You may not be able to go back to that particular company. Also, if you’re in a position to get a federal government job or some other job then they’ll ask you to sign a waiver for a more thorough background check. This waiver allows the employer to give a more in detail description of your time there. As long as they follow well documented points of your employment there, including your well documented departure, you may find that you don’t get that position and you have no legal recourse against your former employer. Even if an employer is mistreating you, it’s best to take the high road and then move on.
Some times the high road causes mental damage. So many abusive employers affect the mental health of employees. Dont allow that. They wont think twice about you when you leave. Some still give bad references bc they are nasty.
@@athomewithrobin292 mental damage? I’m not of this generation, and while I acknowledge there are some real issues with mental health, we blow mental health out of proportion many times over. People are not working at the mere hint of anxiety, and anxiety is a natural emotion used for human survival. People are out there just trying to survive and the last thought in their head is mental health. Talk to someone in North Korea about mental health, see if they care that your boss is trying to force you to work Saturday. I wonder if they’d look your way as they step over the dead bodies in the street, laying there due to starvation. If you want to be successful you will need to be strong sometimes. If you don’t you will face consequences for your decisions.
@paulcarter6962 Totally insensitivity to the problem at hand. Just because there are other horrible situations doesn't mean gloss over mental health. This world has " damaged" humanity. No one seems to care how to treat eachother and the world is going to shit. Basic human decency respect and courtesies. That went over your head.
@@athomewithrobin292 again, I recognize real mental health issues. I’ve seen them first hand. I’ve also seen people overcome real adversity. Dealing with a boss that isn’t your cup of tea, or is making your work life bad is not a mental health issue. If you’re going into a situation with an underlying condition, then fine, do what you have to do, and get out of there. If you’re just feeling some anxiety, or whatnot, then nut it up for a week or two. Have mercy! The world isn’t sunshine and roses. Nature doesn’t have any regard for your mental health. You either survive or you don’t. That’s why I bring up people that are really going through things. Those people don’t have a choice to survive. What do you think is going through their heads if they were to hear about an issue like we are talking about now? Here’s the facts: you don’t work you won’t have a home, car, food, healthcare, and any other thing that you need money for. No one will just give it to you. Survive or be eaten. You disagree then fine, good luck with that.
Employers don't appreciate or earn this anymore to begin with. in fact typically they'll tell you that your services are not needed anymore and you can leave immediately. then they put it down on paper that you quit because most people don't know to get it in writing or youre still employed. Get it on paper that you were fired... because that's what it was. UI payments will be all but guaranteed then.
Learned a lot of corporate was going at me personally. Lot of talk behind the back. Sudden butchered hours but never got a memo, warning or even a talk that my work has to improve. So with all that, I just left.
I am a rental worker is there anything my bosses or company can do to protect us agents unsolicited religious preaching or lectures from customers?
