Great info! Thanks for being so detailed and specific. We just had our 1st broody hen, we have one baby chick hatched today, waiting for 2 others to hatch.
Thank you for your gentle compassionate explanation. I’m a total softy and don’t think I would be very good with little dead chicks. I have a very broody hen (on repeat), so am thinking about giving her some fertilised eggs.
Very interesting info. We had brooding hens back when I was a child, but I never fully understood the process, since I was just a child. Thanks for taking me back to those wonderful days of my childhood.
What a wonderful short film. Your enthusiasm and knowledge are shared so gently and kindly. 5/7 eggs hatched yesterday. Followed your wisdom and that of an old book by Ray Fetwell. Between you both, I have some beautiful little ones with no great expertise on my part at all!
Great video thank you so much for sharing I was wondering about the chicks getting damp and dying. When is it OK to let mom and babies run free in the garden I'm afraid of the dew in the morning I live in Tennessee
Very interesting and comprehensive, I like the idea of Mum brooding, hatching and looking after her chicks, showing them what is good what is bad, surely it is better for the little ones to learn from Mum, I have the time so I most appreciate you sharing your knowledge Phill. Thank you!
I have a problem with eggs not hatching altogether, 1 has hatched almost 4 days before next 1 ,3 days later 1 more but not doing well ,still has 7 eggs to go ,no signs of pippin, all eggs where placed at the same time ,why is this happening, please help any advice would be greatly appreciated
This is not uncommon as a hen will only lay an egg a day, so regardless of fertilisation, they will often be staggered when hatching. Usually they will all have hatched out within about a week of each other at most, so if you have any that have not, it would be best to candle them to check that they are all viable
