Tips on how to raise/elevate a sprinkler head.
A lot to times a sprinkler head can be in the right position for watering, but other factors can affect it's performance. In this video an ornamental grass is screening a Rain Bird 3504 rotor from watering correctly. One solution is to raise/elevate the rotor to improve it's watering performance.
Video also covers how to install a nozzle, radius adjustment, setting the left stop, and arc adjustment on the Rain Bird 3504 rotor.
Parts in video are annotated.

Thank you - I've gotten SOAKED way too many times adjusting stops (just yesterday), and never realized you could do it without the water running! Boy do I feel like a dummy.....

I need to know exactly where the water is coming from. Is it leaking where the head threads onto the nipple? If so try tightening the body of the head a little more on the nipple. You will get small amounts of water from the nozzle and sometimes a little from the shaft when it pops up. You shouldn't get any more than what you see in the video.

I think you can find a longer sprinkler head instead so you don't stomp or trip with that stake.

Isn't there something called a slip-clutch on the rain bird 5000 which allows you to adjust the left stop rather than rotating the whole rotor body to get the left stop position? That way, you could screw the rotor all the way down firmly and just use the slip-clutch to fine tune the rotation.

Yes, newer Rainbird rotors have the slip clutch feature.

The nozzle and the filter broke off. And I am unable to replace them because the thing(I don’t know what it’s called) in the ground is inaccessible. Should I dig it up like you did. I have a Rain Bird nozzle and filter. Is the thing in the ground called the rotor? I have an in ground sprinkler system. When I turn the system on the sprinkler heads come out of the ground.

The black body is the sprinkler head that pops up (Rain Bird 3504 rotor in my video), the gray pipe is a 1/2" Schedule 80 PVC nipple, the nipple connects to a threaded tee in the sprinkler line.

When you say "decrease the arc" or "increase the arc" are you talking about the radius of the spray?

No, radius is the distance the sprinkler head will water. Arc is the pattern the head waters, like 90 degrees (1/4 circle), 180 degrees (1/2 circle), etc. You adjust the radius with the radius adjustment screw on the front of the nozzle and the arc/pattern from the adjustment slot at the back of the nozzle.

Okay, that's what I meant by radius, not necessarily the distance out from the sprinkler head. I meant the 90º, etc. as you explain. When I think of arc, I think of someone shooting a basketball into a goal, the flight path of the ball creates an arc; a vertical arc as opposed to your horizontal arc, but I get it. Thank you. I have a septic sprinkler head I need to fix(ran it over with the mower). This was helpful.

Alan C Your basketball analogy makes sense but in sprinklers the flight path of the water is termed "trajectory". Most spray heads and rotors have a 25-30 degree angle of trajectory.

Sprinkler heads are on the zone side of the valve so you wouldn't need to shut off the water supply. The only caveat to this is don't elevate the head if your timer is due to come on.

I have Rain Bird ESP with two zone sprinklers. The water supply is a pump about 100 yards from the controller. The Rain Bird will turn on the pump and go through the cycles as programmed BUT fails to turn off the pump when finished. Any ideas? I've had the ESP checked at dealer and he says is good.

Steven Slusher Sounds like the relay isn't disengaging when the timer turns off. I would take a multi-tester and check that the timer isn't sending power (24-29 volts) to the relay when the timer shuts off. If the timer is still sending power to the relay the the problem is in the timer, if the timer isn't sending power to the relay when it shuts off the problem has to be the relay.

Turn the silver screw in the top of the nozzle clockwise until it enters the stream. This will cut down the radius/distance the head will water.

I need to raise a rotor head several feet to get over plants. Is that recommended. I see like 3-4 footvrisers for the pop up spray heads. But not with rotor heads.

I would support the rotor with something. Maybe a steel post or if it's near a fence a post in the fence.

Ok thanks. Its in flower bed bed next to patio. Ill just get some spikes and drive in next to it. Or maybe something a lil longer like a stick of conduit

The solution presented on this video is only practical in areas where you can place, without any danger of tripping over it, support stakes to protect the new or longer sprinkler. In this video the sprinkler is close to a wall where supposedly nobody would be walking The other alternative is using a combination of elbows an fittings to lower the insertion point of a longer body sprinkler that would rise its sprinkling head to a higher point. Of course, this would be a different set up.
