Today I'm talking about how I rate movies and the pitfalls I've seen in trying to create a consistent movie rankings. I use a numeric scale of 1-10 but the most important thing is how you think about ratings and reflect your true feelings in the ratings you give.

I think it is difficult to rate a movie without any kind of emotional attachment, but omitting a category for enjoyability must help. This is the difference between favour (subjective); and greatness (objective)

Great video! For me it’s: 10 = Masterpiece 9 = Amaziing 8 = Great 7 = Good 6 = Okay 5 = Meh 4 = Bad 3 = Awful 2 = Terrible 1 = Disaster

I really liked the perspective you offered about not being afraid to give movies fives. A lot of the time I end up dismissing movies as bad if they're not great and you make really good points about it being a gradient and it not being great but a 4-6 rating is a really natural place for a lot of movies to end up at.

Thanks for the feedback. It just seems very rare for people to just say a movie is ok/decent. Everything is called ‘good’ or ‘bad’. I see decent movies all the time

I agree! Rates are good for quick communication, and you can expand on that with arguments. I also prefer the clean 1 to 10 scale. Pitchfork goes hardcore by adding decimals 😅

Thanks for the feedback. Rather than add decimals, I note what the next closest grade is. So, if a rating is 6, then I will note the range is a 6-7 or a 5-6. That way, I know if it was closer to a 7 or a 5

When I talk about movies, shows, books, games, etc, to my friends. I just put them into tiers: Tier 6: Dogsh*t(don't watch) Tier 5: Forgettable(had decent ideas but failed as a whole) Tier 4: Mixed(might be worth seeing, but wouldn't recommend to others or hype it up) Tier 3: Solid(worth checking out, probably better if you're already into that particular genre) Tier 2: Spectacular(definitely worth seeing, resonates with me) Tier 1: Iconic(hit me deep down, and most likely inspirational to me, whether it comes down to writing fiction or my personal approach to life like specific mindsets, interests, or hobbies)

That’s pretty much covers it. Tiers 3&4 are the ones I expand a bit because they covers a lot of movies. For me, the majority. Do you know about the podcast I have on this channel? Look under Live content. Just did the latest one and it is posted with chapters for each movies.

When you can watch a movie multiple times and never get bored of it, that's when you know it's a ten. For me that movie is Joker and Gladiator.

I usually say that for a 9 or a 10. There can be a very rewatch able movie that nevertheless has flaws that prevent them from being 10s. As a fan of the Die Hard movies, Die Hard 3 comes to mind as a 9.

I recently started rating movies and I realized my ratings are flawed as I easily gets influenced from imdb ratings and other online reviewers. I was searching for a video on how to rate a movie efficiently and I think this video is the best. I appreciate it so much. I would love if you can make a video on giving examples on movies that are flawed in some ways and explanation on how to find flaws. Like what is missing in Die Hard 2 that you think it's not 10, but 8/9.

I liked hearing about how your rating system is done, mine is sorta similar but allows me to categorize a film, on being amazing to terrible in technicality, while leaving space to be specific with how I felt about it. for me 8-10 is classics, 10 beings films with a profound impact on me, while 9 being maybe just as good but didn't reach that personal spark you'd need for a 10. 8 out of 10 is meaning I enjoyed it quite a fair amount and think the work in it is stellar, but there wasn't any peak of major enjoyment for me that stretches it into the higher scores. 5-7 are more run-of-the-mill movies, and the rating of 5 to 7 is purely on enjoyment, and allows a 7 being something I'd still recommend while it's being a newer film. while 2-4 are films are what I'd consider bad. the twist is usally a bad film that I give a 4, I usually enjoy more then the run of the mill films I give a 5. but this all really allows me to to add an extra layer on my rating system, so when looking back at it I cant really know what a number means. and for what 1 means, well... I try not to go there. In short I usually decide to rate a film on the 3 categories of technicality, then choose one of the three rating all based on how I felt.

I see what u are saying. Sometimes movies are very technically sound but not good otherwise. I will make a follow up about what I think goes into whether I like a movie, and how technically sound it is plays a role

@lowkeyclassicmovies yai get no enjoyment out of these 3 movies so I rate them 1s there not even fun bad a I think I was actually offended by TMNT 3 as a kid and notice the quality drop as a kid so that's saying something

@@UrbanThrillSeeker I remember feeling the same way the first time I saw TMNT 3. Like, what happened? Also, did you ever notice that in TMNT 2 the turtles didn't use their weapons at all. The only weapons used were make-shift ones.

Your point "You should grade a lot of movies as 5s" is flawed. In order not to waste my time, I avoid mediocre or terrible movies. Usually, my established rule-of-thumb is, if it has less than 7 stars on IMDb, I'm not gonna watch it, unless it is controversial (i.e., probably a lot of unjustified downvotes) or a cult classic, ...or I'm just in the mood for something trashy to "cleanse my palate". Hence, most of the ratings I give are 6s to 9s, with 7 being most common.
@lowkeyclassicmovies
@lowkeyclassicmovies 5 месяцев назад
I guess that if you miraculously only watch movies you end up liking, you may not rate many movies a 5. I can only speak from my own experience and even after figuring out what kind of movies I prefer, I see a fair number of average /mediocre/ok films. Sometimes, they just fail to deliver on their promise. Other times I’m trying out new creatives or subjects/genre not in my preference. I would contend that that there may be a lack of discernment if one would recommend every movie they ever see. You do mention rating things 6, which by my scheme is below a “recommend”, but just barely.

@@lowkeyclassicmovies Hey, thanks for replying as well. I guess I somehow adjusted my own rating scale to be "equivalent" to the IMDb ratings which I consult usually. Therefore, a 6 for me is already in "meh" territory; still enjoyable, but not really convincing. I also only very rarely give a 10; maybe once or twice a year. BTW, the reason I came across your video is that I wanted to harmonize my own rating scheme to be more consistent and fair, and I think it helped.
@lowkeyclassicmovies

@@hymen0callis Thanks for the positive feedback! My recollection is that the imdb rankings are very condensed. The very best movies are maybe an 8.9 at most and absolutely terrible movies don't dip below 3.5. Tons of movies are between 6-7. On that scale, 6 or even 6.5 is an "average" movie score.
