My cousin has a Christmas cactus that began as a cutting from our grandmother’s plant. When she got the cutting, our grandmother had been growing that plant 50 years, and she has been dead 27 years. Thus, my cousin has a 77 year old Christmas Cactus! Oh how I wish I had a piece🥰🥰🥰.

Holy smokes - how epic!!! Talk about a family heirloom.
@lorettarussell3235

Ask for some pieces of the plant & grow from those peicss/cuttings like your cousin did from your grandmothers plant, then you will have a piece of your grandmothers plant.
@lorettarussell3235
@lorettarussell3235 2 года назад
You could also ask for your cousin to start you a plant from hers like she did from your grandmothers since she obviously has success at growing them. That way you will have a descendant of your grandmothers plant if it means a lot to you to have a piece of your grandmothers plant like it seems to. That is what I would do.

I looked it up. the Christmas cactus was introduced into cultivation around the time of the American civil war. Although the plant can be grown from seed, most of them are passed on by cuttings, so if we count in the line of plants your grandmother got her cutting from, that plant could be about 160 years old. If your grandmother had been able to pass her plant on to someone else, it could still be alive. These plants are heirloom species and can live for amazingly long times.

Seeing you pot up a Christmas cactus brings back memories. My parents came from West Virginia which, at that time was an area known for bitter poverty. Large flower pots were scarce then, and most farm families couldn't afford one if they had been available. The same thing went for steel cookware, So most people cooked their meals in Aluminum pots, which didn't last long. Sooner or later, they became leaky and useless for cooking. So when a West Virginia housewife had a large plant to pot up, she would take an old, leaky aluminum stockpot, punch some more holes with a nail, and use it as a plant pot. One of the big plants planted in these kettles was the family Christmas cactus or "Star Of Bethlehem" ( a White flowered epiphyllum. The petals represented the star, and the stamens represented the straw in the manger.) I must have been fifteen years old before I could remember seeing a Christmas cactus growing in a clay or plastic pot. To this day, when I think of a Christmas Cactus, I remember my Aunt Rita's plant in its beat-up old aluminum kettle.

It's incredible how little we value things like a simple terra cotta pot you can buy at Bill's Dollar Store for, say, under $5.00 easily. With Biden's inflation raging, I'm sure even those are out of reach for the average person! 🙁
@emmitstewart1921
@emmitstewart1921 2 года назад
@@daleandrews3552 I use common plastic pots, which are much less expensive, but I know what you mean. I'm on a fixed income, so I am hit harder than most. I've been experimenting for years with drilling holes in Dollar Tree containers. Finding containers in the right size and shape is a challenge. Oh well, necessity is the mother of invention, so I expect thousands of inventions in the next few years.

Thank you so much for the tip about using orchid compost for these types of cactus,our easter cactus is now 25 years old and flowers with no fail each year but tends to get droopy after flowering time is over,have been using ordinary cacti compost but to treat our old little cactus i will try the orchid one this time as its due to be re-potted,thanks again for the tip!
@desertplantsofavalon
@desertplantsofavalon 8 лет назад
+magicfuntime Thank you so much for your wonderful comment :-) So pleased to hear that the video helped :-) Thats amazing that you have grown your Easter cactus for 25 years, well done :-) I have found that using Orchid compost is brilliant for these Epiphytic plants, as they don't like to be kept dry like most of the desert cacti, and yet the Orchid compost is still very well draining for these plants :-) I have noticed also that my Schlumbergera cacti often go a bit droopy after flowering, and I think its possibly because the plant uses up a lot of its energy making flowers, and often goes into a bit of a rest afterwards but soon recovers as the weeks go by, so I don't think this is anything to worry about :-) Thanks so much for watching, and sending you loads of love and happy growing from Ireland for a fantastic day XXXXX ,3

I've had cacti for a long time and I was looking for info on suitable compost for growing xmas cacti from seed and came across your video again (had seen part of it earlier this year). Thanks for the info on using orchid compost - in the past I've always used a general purpose compost but last year I started having problems with the parent plant and cuttings failing using my usual supplier as the constituency had changed. I'll get some orchid compost and try that. It was good to see how happy you are in the videos. It make watching them a pleasure. I'll check out you other videos on cacti -hoping to get tips on how to get them to flower regularly. Robert.

Robert Billing Thanks so much Robert for your lovely comment :-) I'm so pleased that you enjoyed the video and found it helpful :-) I have had great success with using Orchid compost with my Christmas Cacti and other Epiphytic cacti, as i find it keeps the soil more moist than sandy cactus soil but still well drained :-) Thanks so much for watching and have a wonderful week ahead XXXX

Hi Lynn💚!!! I wasn't sure how to get you attention for a question I have about Easter cactus!:I repotted some of my Christmas cactus today and I actually grouped 2 medium plants I've grown over the past few years with a hand ful of segments. They came from my Mom's cactus,shes96 and the cactus is approximately 40 yrs old. Anyhow ,I didn't water it ,I misted it for now. My real question is where the heck are the Easter cactus 🌵 in the stores?! And did I goof by grouping them?.💚 Your the best and most reliable person with all your help. I don't do Facebook or Twitter; so I'm hoping you see this 💚👍💕

Hi Ellen :-D thats wonderful you have repotted your Christmas cactus and thats absolutely great that you have grouped them together and with the segments, these cacti grow well planted together, and I have quite a few of mine all planted together and they grow well grouped into the same pot, and oh my golly I know its impossible to find any Easter cacti for sale these days, its so odd as Christmas cactus is so easily available, I know that Easter cactus can be a lot trickier to grow than the Christmas cactus, as Easter cacti drop their leaf segments and I am always having to re start my Easter cacti, but it is so odd that they are not in the stores especially around the Easter time coming up now, thats so awesome your Mum is 96 years young

What a fantastic video Lyn! Your cactus is so healthy and huge lol. I've seen these repotted so many different ways, but this one is really close to the way I do things. Thanks for sharing this with us. She looks absolutely beautiful in her new pot!💕 I have to repot my mother plant, she's gotten so big over the past yr and a half. What's your recommendation on repotting.. before or after blooming? Once every 2 to 3 yrs? Just curious because every one does things a little different. I guess it all depends on how fast she grows🙄.. What type of lighting situation do you have her in too? I see people growing her in a little sunlight, to a lot of sunlight, to just bright in-direct light lol. Yours looks so happy so I was just curious 😊 Thanks for sharing Lyn! It's always so great to see you and your beautiful collection of cacti! I can't wait to have a polytunnel, filled with so many different varieties of plants like you lol.. I'm getting there 🤗🦋 Have a beautiful day!

So happy you enjoyed the video of repotting my big old Schlumbergera :-D its best to repot these beauties after flowering, because if you repot them just before or when they are producing buds, the buds can fall off, I repot mine about once every 3 years, I have noticed that they are more likely to flower when they are more rootbound too, I keep mine in a bright position that gets more indirect light, they can take sun but they can go a little bit yellow or red in direct sunshine, and a more shadier position with a bit of indirect sunshine suits these plants best :-D thanks so much Stacey for your wonderful comment and for watching and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER to Florida and have a fantastic Tuesday today XXXX

I live in Michigan and I’m wondering what season to transplant a Christmas Cactus? I heard in the Spring.
@desertplantsofavalon
@desertplantsofavalon 4 года назад
Hi Vicki :-D You can transplant now if there are no signs of any buds yet, but if your cactus is forming buds its best to wait until after your plant has flowered because sometimes repotting them when they are budding can cause the buds to drop, Spring is always best to re pot but it is safe to repot in Winter too, if you do it after the plant has stopped flowering, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching and sending you an abundance of love and happiness and PLANT POWER from the Emerald Isle for a fantastic Friday XXXX

@desertplantsofavalon
@desertplantsofavalon 4 года назад
Hi there :-D sometimes when they produce flowers they can go limp during this time because they use a lot of their energy for producing buds and flowers, and sometimes they will go limp also after flowering as they recover, but once flowering is over you can go ahead and re pot again, and check over the root system and soil to check that there are no signs of hidden bugs in the soil or on the roots, but I would definitely wait until your plants have finished flowering before you repot them :-D thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching and sending you an abundance of love and happiness and PLANT POWER from across the Emerald Isle for a fantastic Thursday XXXX

Hi Carolina :-D its best to take cuttings as it can be very difficult to split the plant up, sometimes they can be split up and divided if there are individual stems that have been grouped together, but if its one plant the only way to split the plant is by taking cuttings, the leaf segments will root well in both water and soil, thanks so much for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a super Sunday XXXX

Just because it bloomed realy well last year, please transplant it in the near future. I may not be able to save this cactus, because I waited too long to transplant. I have 3- 4” Easter cactus- can I plant them all in one pot to make one larger pot? What size pot would you recommend?
@desertplantsofavalon
@desertplantsofavalon 2 года назад
Hi Leslie :-D yes you can plant them all together in one pot, the width of the pot does not matter, but its important to not use a pot that is too deep as these Cacti prefer to be potted more shallow, and can be prone to root rot if they are planted in too deep of a pot, its better to slightly under than over pot as this also encourages more chances of blooming, thanks so much for watching and have a wonderful plant powered Tuesday XXXX

Hi there. I have a Christmas Cactus and its leaves have recently started to shrivel up and drop off the plant. I have had it for a few years and this is the first time this has happened. Could you give me any tips on how I can prevent this getting any worse? Thanks in advance, Ray.
@desertplantsofavalon
@desertplantsofavalon 3 года назад
Hi Ray, so sorry to hear about your Christmas cactus, usually when this happens it can be due to the root system or the foliage being attacked by bugs, if there are pests on the roots or on the leaves that are hard to see they will cause the plant to shrivel the leaves, I would repot your cactus into new soil and check over the roots very carefully to see for any signs of hidden pests on the roots, and then repot up into new well draining soil, I would also check the leaves and underneath the leaves for any signs of pests hiding on the leaves, if there are no signs of pests on the roots or the leaves, sometimes a repot into fresh soil can help, I hope this helps, and thanks so much for watching, sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a terrific Tuesday XXXXX

@desertplantsofavalon
@desertplantsofavalon 4 года назад
Hi Emily :-D if the roots are not too rootbound you can just change the dirt, but if its very rootbound it would be best to move it into a bigger pot, if you repot it into a bigger pot its still best to change the dirt as a freshen up of new dirt would be best, remove any traces of any bugs you see in the soil and on the roots before repotting again, good luck with your Christmas cactus and thanks so much for watching XXXX

I have a question, I have both desert cactus and jungle cactus in the same room. I think the jungle cactus needs more humidity. If I put a humidifier in my room to increase the humidity, will the desert cactus be ok?
@desertplantsofavalon
@desertplantsofavalon 7 лет назад
Hi Tim :-) Ideally it would be best to keep your Desert cacti away from any extra humidity as they like to be kept as dry as possible with the air humidity dry, but I do keep mine together in my conservatory where the air humidity is very damp and I find that as long as I keep the Desert cacti totally unwatered during the Winter months then I don't have any problems, from the Spring onwards your Desert cacti will be fine together with your Jungle cacti as during the growing periods Desert cacti can take more humidity :-) I think your best bet would be to keep all your cacti without a Humidifier and instead maybe spray with water your Jungle cacti with an overhead plant spray to increase the humidity every 3 days and it would save you having to keep a humidifier on in your room :-) Hope this helps and sending tons of happy growing to you XXXX

Maybe you can help? I inherited an indoor Christmas cactus, at least 30 years old, my grandmother’s. It’s in a large, wide pot with only two real “stem” type things, and they go out opposite from one another and are very long. It desperately needs new soil as it has been over-watered, but I’m new to caring for plants and afraid of what the roots may look like. Also I know I can re-plant the individual pieces, but what about the thick brown stem - can it be trimmed back? At the recommendation of the garden specialist I got special soil and plant food. I’m just scouring the internet looking for help, but mine looks so different from those I see online!

Hi Adrian :-) thanks so much for your wonderful comment :-) yes you can still re pot this cactus in the Winter, I always prefer to re pot them in the Spring or Summer but its not a problem to re pot them during the Winter as long as the plant is not coming into bud, as re potting can often make them abort their buds, so its always best to wait after flowering to re pot :-) the small leaves that fall off root very easily by placing them back onto the top of the soil, or individually into little pots :-) hope this helps and thanks so much for watching :-) sending you loads of love and happy growing from Ireland for a fantastic afternoon XXXXX
