Rice hulls are great for aeration and when they break down it’ll release silica into the soil.

I always reuse soil... let rest old soil for 1 month until it's dry (I leave it outside to get some IMO and bugs working on it) .... after that, I discard the soil that is around main roots and add 1/3 of silage (pickled grass), some lime powder to reduce acidity and water until saturation (all it can handle without getting mud)... and I use wooden fruit baskets (bushels) as pots... 1gr/W with a Viparspectra V450 and a MarsHydro 96 (400w total does 400gr of nuggets in a 3x3 tent)... lamps are very bad but it is what I have.... I don't use fans or special nutrients... my "nuts" are normal agriculture foliar nutrients applied on soil, one for grow (more N) and other for flowering (more PK)... I keep my process as simple (and cheap) as possible... I am doing this for 6yrs, 15 batches without any problems or diseases... This is not a recipe to follow... it is just a different (simple) approach...

I've been recycling my soil for about two years almost three now. I use three different Rubbermaid totes I tend to use blood meal, bone meal, earthworm casting, Gai green 4-4-4. Sometimes fox farms marine cuisine 10-7-7 and mycorrhizal in my starter soil. Flowering soil the same, accept I changed the Gai green to the 2-8-4 and I add little potash. This last grow I got a major deficiency going on watching this video. I'm might have to find my closet soil tester and see what I really need.

Personally, I like to ph, ppm, and EC my used soil in order for me to see what’s going on. I added a bit of Montana silica, glacial rock dust, basalt dust, Craft Blend, SEA-90, humic acid, calcium carbonate lime, Gnarly Barley, and mix it up. Most of these inputs were from BuildASoil. I also added a cup of Nectar for the Gods One Shot to the bottom of the holes, with some volcanic rocks and dried plant material in the bottom of my outdoor holes. The soil I’m digging into is a peat moss bog that’s not heavy in clay but rich in clay. I’m hoping that the loose 3-4 inches at the bottom of the hole will allow for biological activity. By the time the roots reach down to this point, they’ll be entering 2.5 feet down. It’s more of a nutrient bank. It’s all theory, and I did send it in for analysis prior to doing anything.

I always reuse my soils.. I'll have 100 lts of soil from the last grow..all I do is let the soil dry out and remove the roots from the last grow..first I'll add (25lts of organic potting mix) then I add ( 1/3 worm castings 33lts ) then (1/8 bone meal 12lts ) (1/16 garden lime aka calmag 6lts) and ( 1/8 perlite 12lts ) and turn it every 3rd day for 6 weeks..and I normally keep doing the same for 5 to 6 grow cycles

One thing I add is diatomaceous earth. About 1 cup for 10 gallons. It lightens the soil, helps make it less desirable to fungus gnats. It also breaks down into silica. That breakdiwn takes time but helps in future grows. I also like some wood ashes. That adds not only potassium but all the micronutrients that end up getting taken out of the soil over time. Careful! Ashes are very high pH.

when re-using my old soil i have been adding my home made compost to old soils from the year before and then keeping the mix in 27 gal covered containers that i moisten and leave in the dark for weeks , sometimes months . sometimes i will add manure to the mix when i put it into pots along with perlite and have recently been using worm castings as well at about a 1/5 ratio . i rarely use any nutrients during veg if at all and mostly concentrate on nutrients during flower at low concentration. so far , so good.

I have never thrown any soil out, going on about 2 years indoor now(base is fox farm). I let them dry out, take them out side and shuck as much of the roots as i can out. Then i put 4-4-4 fert in it and mix it well, lightly water and let sit for a month or two with very light sprays of water every two weeks or so. Get a bag of perlite and worm castings to mix in and you have yourself some potent soil for the next run, for the first 5-6 weeks anyway.
@mopar426power
@mopar426power Год назад
I run no till and leave the roots in. The roots break down create food for microbes and create air channels. Also the network of fungi is attached to those roots. You wait so long to establish that network and when you plant back in the new plant can connect and hook up to that existing fungal network very quickly. I know dumping reamending is destroying a lot of that network anyways which I'd never do but if i were you id try to keep more of the roots in there. They are good food for the microbes and break down into nutrients for the plant eventually

@@mopar426power how many grows could i get in a 3 gallon without removing roots??
@mopar426power
@mopar426power Год назад
@@jetlifebih7853 3 gallons i wouldn't do no till. Thats way to small of a pot. With organics think of the soil as a battery. The bigger the pot the bigger the battery. I run 20 and 30 gallona and im on almost done with my 4th run and have had absolutely 0 deficiencies or problems. Running organics in small pots is possible but it's a lot harder keeping up on the watering, nutrients and keeping the biology happy. Best advice i can give you is go as big of a pot as you can. 10 gal minimum
@cannafarmer
@cannafarmer Год назад
@@mopar426power my 7 gallon cloth pots seem fine for living soil but you have to top dress a few times with gaia or whatever. Seems to work
@mopar426power
@mopar426power Год назад
@@cannafarmer Of course. You can really make anything work. It's about how much extra effort you are willing to put in. Since I've switched to bigger pots life is so much easier and the plant health has been incredible. That extra soil really does give you a very good buffer. Only thing you have to be careful about with big pots is overwatering. Once you get the watering down its just coasting. After i harvest I reamend the pots, transplant when they outgrow the 1 gals i start in and do one top dress a cpl days to a week before flower. If plants are big i may add a little more top dress around week 3 but thats it besides some supplements like my homemade fermented plant extracts or coconut water.

Some great points so far, to which I’d like to add: there’s this stuff called Liquid Soil which I’ve started using in the past year, and it’s pretty neat. It’s made by TPS Nutrients to which I have no connection whatsoever and as far as I understand it’s got three components which work synergistically: The first is a flushing agent which binds to the ionic salts, the second is a microbial inoculation to revive the rhizosphere, and the third is an enzyme to help digest the old dead roots into a source of carbohydrates. I run about 2 to 3 gallons of the solution to each gallon of soil and let it sit for a couple of days and then mix in amendments such as worm castings, rock dust and guanos for the next season. I’m also a big fan of Hygrozyme which is wonderful addition to any regimen. Together, they’ve gone a long way towards correcting mystery micronutrient deficiencies and pH drift issues due to leftover salts and/or unprocessed dead matter in my soil. Cheers, and I hope this helps!

I definitely appreciate no till. However it doesn't seem like it would make a big difference when growing in smaller containers, like 5-10 gal. Reusing and mixing in my own inputs, just as you did in the video has given me great results. And I am of the mind, if it isn't broke, don't fix it. One thing I don't do is let it "cook." It already takes a few weeks for the root system to begin to use any of those amendments. So I just throw it in my pots, add a few inches of seedling mix on top and in the middle, and chuck in my beans. Thanks for the video.

Been going on year 7 of reusing my soil. I do add worm castings and compost along with pro mix and bumper crop every other year I’ll dump it in mortar tub and mix in new soil and shrimp meal and crab meal. Along with some rose and flower mix from down to earth. Along with 1 oZ of myco. Let sit in 0pots for 10 days or more to cook and the plants get better and better. The soil get fermented fruit and plant juice 1 x a week and some microbial boost ie mikrobs or recharge 1-2 x a month and alway after I top dress with shrimp and crab meal in early flower after that it just ferments and molasses water. Last summer I only feed. My plants 1 time in early august and they were ripe and beautifully faded by mid October some earlier some later. I will always be loyal to the soil I’ve grown in coco and had to PH up and down and that was a pain In ass and the smoke was dogshit.

Always a wise practice to prepare your soil well in advance and let it rest for a little while before planting. I found out the hard way the first time I started using dry amendments and mixing my own soil.

I can't afford not to reuse my soil. Do farmers buy new soil and put on their fields?? no they reconditioned soil for 1,000 of years.

I just started doing this and saves me soil that is still in good condition. Saves me money. I flush my soil first then dry it. I take most of the roots. For re-amending, i use gaia green organics and mykos. Cook for a week then I use it. I use the soil within a week.

This was an interesting video. I was thinking about recycling last years soil with some new base soil, and possibly some "ammendments". I did notice that my root structure was very dense (but not circling the pot), evenly spread out, dense, and lively. I was rather shocked after harvest and took a look at the roots. This observation gave me great knowledge about what was working with how I grew. With that being said, I started to think about what roots from harvested plants may contain within them? And if they'd help or hurt the next batch of soil using the old soil and roots?

Would a surfactant help with rehydration?

Natural surfactants like yucca are great. Don't use soap because it breaks down to salts. Alfalfa contains saponins and helps in the same way.

Any tips for insect control besides using an oven?

what insects? spider mites, I'd throw it out - just to be safe. Gnats etc, I just put diatomaceous earth on the top and let the soil dry out for a bit before reusing it. You can also water it with Mesquito Bits (product name) in some water before rehydrating the soil - or even nematodes in water before rehydrating (great for fungus gnats).

Soil is only good for 1 growing period and then you should throw it away? - Seems like a good marketing move made by companies selling soil. In reality as long as you add new nutrients into it, it's good to go. You don't see soil being replaced in nature annually and yet it's giving good results year by year. + for those whose concerns are - Roots from old plant, well roots are absorbing Nitrogen so they are good for futures growth anyway, especially given that Nitrogen is vital for vegetative stage of growth.
