American football is a constantly evolving game of strategy. Defensives are constantly adapting to what offenses throw at them. At the core defenses adjust through the use of fronts- or how they align to offenses.

Show me anyone on any podcast that can talk football and break it down better than Kevin Little….I haven’t found one…this dude knows his sh@#! Xs & Noles and Noles 247 is far and away the best FSU podcast out there…no one is close!

Great stuff, Kev! You do a great job of explaining what I’ve always seen as a game of chess where the pieces become sentient for 10 second bursts. I’d love to see this series continue by building on “responsibilities” with the dynamics of audibles, pre-snap communication through different levels of the D, in-play reads, busts, and maybe even examples of elite players making up for breakdowns that occur. Our D will likely be the better unit this year and the better we understand the minutiae, the more we’ll appreciate the success the unit has (football gods willing).

Oh man there's endless possibilities. Especially when you start factoring how the coverages interact with the fronts. One of the main reasons linebacker is such a difficult position. My next video is dedicated on FSUs defense from last year and addressing those issues going into this season
@briley2177

@@XsandNoles Looking forward to it… especially seeing if you address the differences in production between the first half and second half of the season, the improvement and increased depth of our LB corps., how a better back seven might slightly offset the loss of production on the D line (or perhaps how less pressure might make the secondary look less competent), and finally how a D that was trending up over the back-half of 2021 can build on that improvement in 2022. Thanks for the great content!

Great information on defensive fronts. Any thought about providing information as to what causes the D to switch alignment before the snap and what the O does to counter this late shift. Keep up the excellent work Mr. Little. Go NOLES!
@XsandNoles
@XsandNoles Год назад
Mostly to change looks. Maybe they think they can mess with a defenses protections. The offense has to game plan and know this is coming. Maybe simplify protections. Late shifts are hard to pull off but they're equally hard to prepare for

Love the breakdown. I’m old school and feel that sometimes these defensives get to creative and smart for themselves. A lot of times I feel like straight up helmet to helmet responsibility would win the day. Each D lineman and backer has a hat which clogs the run game and the corners simply need to jam at the line to slow the receiver. I know it’s not that simply in reality but like I said sometimes more is not better
@XsandNoles
@XsandNoles Год назад
Yeah you bring up a good point and one I wanted to get into more in this video. Let's say there's 5 linemen. That's 6 gaps and 6 defenders (1 for each lineman and 1 for the ball handler-lets pretend it's the rb). That leaves 5 people remaining for 4 eligible receivers and the QB. That means straight man coverage all game with one safety who has to be on the lookout for the QB to run. So defenses had to get more complex so they didn't have to sit in man coverage with no help. So they created linebackers. Linebackers are by definition hybrid defenders. They play the run and the pass. So now you can move them around to make sure you have an extra guy where it's needed, when it's needed. Football is a physical sport but it's not a simple one. Hat on hat sounds good in principle but unless you have 11 who are all better than their 11 it's probably not the best way to run things! Thanks for the comment!

What about the Prowler Defense? You know, where everyone stands around and no one on the offense knows who on the defense is doing what.
@XsandNoles
@XsandNoles Год назад
That's definitely a thing. Makes it more difficult to be gap sound but it's definitely an interesting wrinkle to throw in!

Doesn’t the tighter 4i mean TEs can break free easier? Seems they could easily pick up short yardage first downs all day….unless I’m missing something which is most likely lol.
@samueltschida7402
@samueltschida7402 Год назад
Not necessarily. If the defense plays their overhang linebacker (what Kevin called the 'Jack') close to the LOS, then it's still going to be difficult to get off the ball. I do see your point though; if a team runs a tite front and the J is slow to diagnose, there could be a favorable matchup
@XsandNoles
@XsandNoles Год назад
Yeah and you'll see teams try to pin the 4i and run counter. I would be tempted to even say counter is becoming more and more common in cfb partially because of this. 4i was a response to inside zone. No defense is perfect and so you take away what the offense does best and hope they can't do other things well.
