I have remodeled many of my own homes and this is the FIRST time anyone has explained the marks on the tape measure. I've always known the quarter, half etc but never the little lines. The math tricks with the tape measure was cool. Thank you

Thanks for the advice. I’m a plumbing apprentice and I’m slow when it comes to adding/subtracting fractions. This will definitely make me a better apprentice.

Smallest line = 16ths Next line = 8th Next = Quarters. Tallest = half. Just count, so counting 5 lines lands you on a small one, 5/16th. Counting 4 lines land you on the 3rd tallest line, so 4 16ths, or, 1/4. Counting 9 lines are going to be 9/16ths, 10 lines will be 10/16ths or 5/8th.

1) how the hell do they not teach this in US schools. Lol. We know how to use a ruler in grade 1 in Canada. 2)this is why the rest of the world uses metric. Much easier to use

Spot on. Been working with tape measures for just under 2 years (29yo male, served in the US Marine Corps infantry, built many things, etc etc etc but never needed a tape measure for more than a few short minutes) and I never ACTUALLY 100% knew how to read the fraction lines. Instead of saying "its sticking out 5/16"... I'd say "its sticking out a fat 1/4" lmao I found this video because I was looking for a tape measure that had the fractions printed on the tape. Saw this and felt like a dumbass
