Hey guys!
This is my first music lesson. This is more of an experiment to see whether I can actually teach this well and whether any of you guys find it helpful. In the first few minutes of the video, for some reason, my camera would not focus properly but later seemed to work better. Please let me know what you think and tell me any suggestions you might have. JJ

My teacher explained flats and sharps to me and the various keys (key of G, D, etc.) before I had to go on my summer break in a matter of a few minutes and it left me incredibly confused and a bit upset but in such a short film you explained this with ease and incredible clarity! I'm excited to start practicing some pieces I would have been unable to before!

Treble lines: Every Good Boy Does Fine, Treble spaces: FACE, Bass lines: Great Big Dogs Fight Animals, Bass spaces: All Cows Eat Grass This is how I was taught.

Good Boys Do Fine Always for the lines on the bass staff goes better with Every Good Boy Does Fine for the treble lines. Easy to remember.

It was pretty helpful. You seemed a bit nervous at the beginning, but then seemed to get a little more comfortable near the end. This is a good refresher course for former musicians coming back, or for new students. Well played sir. Well played.

My little sister recently asked me to teach her to read music. I'm a bad teacher so I was looking at this lesson to find a simple way to explain it. As soon as I saw you draw such an ADORABLE, perfect treble clef I CRIED and couldn't focus on the video. It was so perfect. I had to watch again. Thanks for the help! : )

Treble clef is also called G clef because the clef sign wraps around the G line, not the B line.

I suggest you keep it up. You will only get better with time. This video was helpful to me as a refresher. I have been away from reading any sort of sheet music for approx. 25 years, so having previous experience, I found it very effective. Other than the small technical issues you warned about, the video is good. For those who didn't understand any of it, I would have to say that they still have a long way to go in their music education.

this is very helpful! I really appreciate it coming from someone who loves music and playing instruments and has no clue how to read note at all. I literally own a piano and a guitar and have no clue how to play them properly

In the beginning, one slight correction/possible addition if you like. The Trebble Cleff is actually a G cleff. The circle inside the body is supposed to engulf the G String. Acltually, this cleff is movable, but you never see it in a different position these days. The Bass Cleff is actually the F Cleff. It moves also, and you have that correctly positioned with the line between the two dots, but it should be more in the center of the two. I hope this helps... AJM

Should draw the Treble Clef with the center loop intersection on the G, or second line up... he drew it intersecting the B. He made a mistake as to the placement of the Bass Clef as well. Two dots should be centered in the first and second spaces down G & E respectively above and below F...line, Dot on the giant apostrophe part of the Base Clef should be on the first line down F. Not hard to draw correctly...! Daah..! Sorry if I'm too picky...

treble lines= Every Good Boy Does Fine (EGBDF) treble spaces=FACE bass lines=Good Boys Do Fine Always bass spaces= All Clowns Enjoy Giggles (ACEG) this is the way I learned it. hope it helps!

We obviously had a fifth grade teacher who didn't understand it all! I was taught Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge, & FACE, (I remember it to this day), but was NEVER taught the REST! OR WHY we needed to remember EGBDF & FACE! I'm 70, with no piano, but I'm learning things that will SURELY help me should I sit down to one! Years ago, (1993) I heard a melody in my heart. I took music lessons to learn where the notes were found! I bought a keyboard, played the song with background, taped it and mailed it to loved ones! It was to Celebrate 21 years loving JESUS..."Love You Lord!" But I don't have the keyboard anymore, & I STILL don't know piano! Never too late to keep learning! 💞 Thanks for your suggestion!

Thank you this has been really helpful. I took piano lessons from the time I was 6 till I was 12 but I always dismissed reading music by just playing by ear. I regret that and now I'm 15 trying to re teach myself and this was very helpful.

I'm a total novice here, so please forgive my naivete. Am I understanding this correctly, that DO RE MI FA SO LA TI DO is basically, E F G A B C D E?

You're on the right track but in that scale there are sharp notes. It's E F# G# A B C# D# E. (# is the symbol meaning sharp if you didn't know)

Scales can be tricky. Some have sharp notes and some have flat notes.

I also learned the "traditional" way. With Do; Re; Mi; Fa; So; La; Ti; Do. And each one has its own letter. So...let's start: DO is C; RE is D; MI is E; FA is F; SO is G; LA is A; TI is B; DO is C. This is the octave. C D E F G A B C, in this order. Think about the alphabet: ABCDEFG - where C is DO. Hope I could help.

DO RE MI FA SOL LA TI DO can be on any 8 adjacent letters, provided that you know all of your scales. The easiest one to use is C D E F G A B C.
