The easiest way I have found to teach kids is GBD (gibidy or just gbd) Face. Also pointing out the F shape on the bass clef...in between the 2 dots of the 'F' and the circle of the 'G' on the treble clef pointing out the G. Also showing where 'FACE' starts on both clefs. Then 'GBD' takes the 3 middle lines on the treble. The 3 lowest on the bass. Kids pick it up so quickly.

The way i learned is by remembering from what the clef is identified with. For example; the trable clef is called a G because it has a focus on a g note right where its ‘ belly ‘ is at. The bass clef is called an f clef where the note is focused on the f note right between the two dots. The tenor clef is slso called a C because its focus is on the c where the pointer is at c. The viola clef (also called alto) is really a movable c clef.

I agree mnemonics are dangerous for this purpose. Ultimately you have to memorize the notes on the staff so something like flash cards would be way more useful. I think if I had known this when I was a kid taking piano lessons things could have turned out differently for me. Well, that and a teacher who wasn't terrifying....

Music notes on a staff is just reinventing the the alphabet A-G. Why not just have the note letter in the oblong circle thing on the end of the note. Leaving everything else the same so the reader can work out the octave depending as usual.

I didn’t know the All Boys Do Fine etc, so I always had to begin with either middle C, F or G. I was taught that in the base clef, F is on the line between the dots and in the treble clef G is placed on the line where the little s shape ends.

It would be good if each line was a different color. Obviously when they first came up with the system, there probably wasn’t printing and certainly not color printing but that would be so much easier because all the lines look like when they’re just black. It’s kind of like on the guitar, if you look at a guitar and you’re not super accustomed to all the positions up the neck and you look at the dots often times when you’re looking at the dots in the moment it’s not so easy when you’re moving really fast from cord to cord to tell the difference between the fifth fret, and the seventh fret. It would be good if they were different symbols. But since they’re both just dots often times you have to really think about which dot it is.

Once again Ms Gracie your stellar ability to teach comes through. And to do this while really ill is heroic. As one who has struggled with sight reading, I am ashamed to say, i never understood how to connect the Treble and Bass Clef's together. With your teaching today, well, it totally makes sense and opens the door to so much. Ever appreciative of your willingness to share all this knowledge and share it well.

Wow! Understanding that the two staves are linked made it so much easier to read bass clef instantaneously. I, too, handicapped myself by focusing more of the mnemonic than the letter names. I “played” in a garage band in the 60s (didn’t everybody?) and never took ANY music. I NEVER knew the relationship of the treble and bass clef until today! I always wondered “How far apart are these 2 clefs?” Now, I know they are 3 half steps apart with middle C smack in between them. Thanks for teaching this old dog a new trick.

Merci beaucoup. Do you have an Armenian saying for the notes? I bought my piano a month ago and started learning. But when I talked to people at the music store, I realized that I needed to have a French-English music book to understand since the French are completely different than those of us who learned Shakespeare's language. For a start they use Do Ré Mi Fa Si La Ti Do, instead of the letters. And the circle of fifths is...I don't know yet. It isn't in my book, which was a book for kids. But hey, I'm just a big kid (enfant).
