I’m 71, played guitar all my life. I’m a stroke victim, paralyzed on left side, can’t hold a guitar anymore. Tried harmonica but not enough breath, so I tried piano only have right hand. Never read music before. Learning now, thanks to your help. Can only play right hand but studying left too. Good job.

I'm now 66 and been playing piano for 6 months. I had joked all my life was that I was born with two left ears. This reminded me of Mister Rogers. He helped a generation of children, and then he had parents of small children thanking him for helping their children. That is trust. There was a great interview by Johnny Carson and Mister Rogers. Total professional respect. BTW I hope to have my video out soon to help pianists with simple exercises and self-treatments to strengthen and stabilize the low back as well as the upper extremities. Very good for those piano injuries and strength in the fingers, especially the 5. Stay tuned.

I want to thank you for this video. I took classical piano lessons from the age of 5 to 14. At my most proficient I performed The Moonlight Sonata at Steinway Hall in NYC. My teacher was a music professor. Anyway for the past couple of months I have been trying to relearn the Sonata but I was scared stiff because I had trouble figuring out the notes above and below the ledger lines. Your approach is very helpful to me. BTW I will be 74 on Halloween. Thanks again

I remember learning in elementary school: Every Good Boy Does Find (5 staff lines E,G,B,D,F) then the word FACE for the spaces (F,A,C,E) I'm extending your words to add "AND BOB" Charlie Does Everything For Gary And Bob (C,D,E,F,G,A,B). That gets me from 2 below C level to 2 above C level😉

Good mnemonics tied to the shapes on the grand staff and associative memory. So instead of remembering a floating disconnected mnemonic like Every Good Boy etc, one can look at the staff itself and connect the notes. This should be standard teaching:)

Jerald, I enjoyed your video on '7 markers'. It gave me a better understanding of the keyboard and for sight reading music. However, when you explained "middle C" , "Sea Level" and "C4", you also called the next "C" (up) the "second C" (actually being C5) @ 9:39. Although, I finally understood what you'd meant, it was confusing with several variations of names for the notes/or key positions for the 8 C's. Thank you for the video. It did help me to familiarize myself with the keyboard notes and gave some good sight reading tips!

Very nice. I’ve played piano for 50 years (classically trained) and still struggle to read a bass clef note (due to so much additional experience playing violin and clarinet.) I can play it fine, but telling you what note it is requires me to think about it. 50 years ago I learned the lined notes of the Treble clef as “Every Good Boy Does Fine” (EGBDF). and of the Bass clef: Good Boys Do Fine Always (GBDFA). And the spaces in the treble clef spell “FACE” and the spaces in the Bass Clef spell ACEG (All Cows Eat Grass) .

Good tips. After teaching thousands of students and performing a thousand gig for over 20 years. My conclusion is to become a good sight reader you have to rewrite the entire traditional notation system. I know that's a stretch to say that but it's true. Note identification is riddled with rules that are too complicated. Learning rhythms are a lot more logical than note identification. If you can change or reduce the rules of note identification and simplify it, then learning how to read music would be a lot more simpler.

I agree! I was classically trained first, and then learned how to play by ear, arrange, transpose, and compose, and to truly learn sight reading, it helps to write out music and even compose music. You really learn the music on a whole new level. Thanks for the comment! - Jerald
