A dot placed next to a note increases the rhythmic duration of that note by half of its original value. For example, if a whole note sounds for two beats, a dotted whole note would sound for four beats.
In this video we will discuss what happens when a dot is placed next to a whole note, a half note, a quarter note, and an eighth note.

I really appreciate your work. I am learning how to play the piano by myself and there are times where I am stuck while reading the sheet music and as a beginner who is self teaching it video helped a lot.

So what exactly is the purpose of ties if it can be played just by a whole note or half or quarter note?

They're slurs, you play them without separating the notes

I’m so lost. I’ve spent ages trying to understand how music is written. What is the word for a similar ‘tie’ but under the notes not over it? When I’m teaching myself bass it sounds like they’re hitting two notes after eachother without hitting the string but I just want to know the word so I can learn more.
