I love that you’re realistic about sunscreen use! The truth is most people aren’t reapplying every 2 hours. Especially if they’re indoors and busy.

She did not say for use to reapply every 2 hours unless outside. Nobody expects that when we are inside and on a day to day basis! If we did, we would be buying spf every week! Just no feasible. I reapply on a normal day two times to three times a day.

And even if they are, the actual recommended amount that is required on the face for the amount of protection listed on the bottle, is WAY more than we see in this video. It's actually pretty wild how much is recommended.

It depends on UV index. If in your country the MAX value of UV index =3 then you can use SPF once a day.
@Zantetsukens

I love how you manage to get data on how much sunscreen is left at the end of 2 hours with different scenarios. While the re-apply every two hours advice is well-meaning, most people recommend it without any thought or understanding. For an office worker who stays indoor most of the time in the shade and commits to not touching his/her face, a good layer in the morning is sufficient for the entire day. Recommending reapplication every two hours is well-meaning but it reeks of an alarmist and almost paranoid attitude if one does not factor in the context and the possibility of exceptions. Once again Michelle, thank you!!!
@debayeuxchats5607
@debayeuxchats5607 4 года назад
I always assumed the two hour suggestion was for people with continuous sun exposure. Not the person spending eight hours indoors, but the hiker/lifeguard/mom running errands/retiree who loves walks/outdoor concert-goer. But I mostly use athletics sunscreen, so maybe that's why that image is in my mind.
@Zantetsukens
@Zantetsukens 4 года назад
@@debayeuxchats5607 there's a growing group of skincare personalities online that advocate for strict reapplication of sunscreens every 2 hours regardless of what you do or where you live. many of them preach this with absolute, almost cult-like conviction. so yea, really very happy Michelle made this video
@debayeuxchats5607
@debayeuxchats5607 4 года назад
@@Zantetsukens That's weird! If I'm at my job, I get zero sun exposure. When I step outside, it's often nighttime. So why would they tell me I need sunscreen? *eye roll* And I'm an extremely pro-sunscreen person! But the UV rays aren't making their way through my building walls just to hunt down my DNA strands, haha.
@S_pelzz95
@S_pelzz95 4 года назад
I completely feel you! I’m indoors too but I work at a gas station! So I always reapply once because there’s always light coming in or if I do the trash I know I definitely and exposing myself to sunlight, but if you’re not exposed constantly under the sun, then reapplication wouldn’t be necessary I believe! 😃
@Zantetsukens
@Zantetsukens 4 года назад
@@debayeuxchats5607 they will tell you your office has a window and UVA can penetrate (as if they are X-rays) and that you NEED sunscreen nevertheless. But Michelle's previous video debunked that. Normalize using umbrellas during sunny days!! I carry a black umbrella with me at all times, and I just hide under there, tuck my arms in and hide my face from the sun. It's a lifesaver!
@biblicallyaccuratecockroach
I always carry a foldable polka dot umbrella in my bag with me as well. Gets me a few weird looks but I'm not the one complaining about the sun, also I got a vampire's reputation to keep :V Standing in line for whatever, whip it out, get a few weird looks that quickly turn into "that was such a smart idea" comments from the people next to me. I even brought it to a marathon once (I wasn't running, just participating) and the group made the usual jokes, but soon enough one of the ladies hitched a ride under it with me because yeah, portable shade is wonderful in the heat. Someday I want to get a proper big black paper parasol to hide under because I'm dramatic like that, but until then my foldable umbrella will do :V I don't go out that much to justify the purchase atm, so it's not in the list of priorities.
@jenniferdignan8507
@jenniferdignan8507 Год назад
Yes, why did we stop using parasols?
@biblicallyaccuratecockroach
@@jenniferdignan8507 Likely because they have always been a high-class, idle rich kind of accessory. A working woman would have to have her hands free and if she wanted protection from the sun a large hat would be more practical. And nowadays even hats are sometimes seen as weird, nevermind parasols, and with cars hats are now even less practical. The only time people take things in their hands and out of their bags is umbrellas in the rain, and even then where I'm from many people (mostly men for some strange reason) consider umbrellas to be for wimps, a sign of defeat in a way, and would rather brave the rain than "admit defeat", unless it's actually pouring out. Heck, I been made fun of for wearing sunglasses on a cloudy day, even if the jokester had to squint to be able to look at me 🙄 no visible sun doesn't mean no sunlight, light cloud coverage actually disperses light MORE than no clouds, and I literally have light sensitivity, so I'll keep my sunglasses on, tyvm

I wish I could just not wear makeup at all but I have really bad discolouration under my eyes that I can't do anything about (it's hereditary) and I literally cannot NOT wear under-eye concealer because people look at me like I'm nuts if I don't and constantly ask me if I didn't get any sleep. You can literally see one big green vein under each eye, it's not the little tiny veins around your eyes it's the one vein that surrounds the whole undereye area and on me it's extremely visible even though I don't have SUPER pale skin or anything. My skin is probably 2 shades darker than Michelle's. There are a million videos out there about concealing "dark circles" but I've never seen one that works for me and specifically addresses my problem. And it's not about "not being confident enough" lmao, it's about rude people who say stupid things and judge other people who they barely know based on nothing! It's funny that the onus is on women to somehow totally ignore the fact that they're constantly scrutinized based on their appearance as opposed to the onus being on everybody to stop scrutinizing women for what they look like. There's an enormous pressure on women to constantly look "presentable" and to be honest, desirable enough, every waking moment of our lives and somehow we're supposed to act like that pressure doesn't exist and if we DO feel bad about it that somehow reflects badly on us and means we're not "strong" or smart enough??? It doesn't reflect badly on these societal expectations that are impossible to escape? So not only are we constantly being held up to an impossible standard (to look young and pretty all the time for as long as we live) and constantly being compared to each other, but if we let this bother than us that means that we're weak or vapid and simply "not confident enough"? It's mind-boggling. I constantly see people, both men and women, act like women who have "insecurities" are somehow immature or pathetic? Call me crazy but it kinda just seems like a perfectly rational human response to the world. It's like asking somebody to constantly carry around a huge weight but expecting them not to feel it.

I have the Neutrogena sunscreen mist SPF 55 that you showed but it's quite "oily" and I didn't really enjoy using it for reapplication. I've found that reapplying with a watery sunscreen (eg. Nivea watergel SPF 50) with clean hands liberally on top of the makeup (while being careful I'm only spreading it and not pushing it in) seems to work. Technique: I blot my makeup first with a tissue paper (oily skin girl here) and that mattifies my face enough that adding the watery gel on top doesn't interact with the makeup. Then I let it dry.

reapplying with a tinted sunscreen (elta MD do a good one) with a makeup cushion or sponge stops you from majorly disrupting the coverage of your makeup. topping it off with a spray-on spf (la roche posay's kids spray sunscreen is fragrance free and works well) can help cover any areas you may have missed, e.g. your eye lids.

I live in Europe.I used to buy Asian products with chemical as well as with mineral filters and had no problems. But because of the pandemic I switched to European products and my white t-shirts are stained. I don't know, whether this depends on certain chemicals, which were not just used in the products I bought before, or because Asian companies do not use filters which leave stains.

@nekosquealer3423 Год назад
1. **Sunscreen Longevity**: Chemical sunscreens absorb into the skin's top layers, providing longer-lasting protection. 2. **SPF Reduction**: The SPF protection reduces throughout the day. For example, SPF 50 could degrade to SPF 35, SPF 30 to SPF 21, and SPF 15 to SPF 10. 3. **UV Exposure**: The amount of sunscreen needed depends on UV exposure and concerns about the effects of UV such as skin cancer, wrinkles, and hyperpigmentation. 4. **Three Situations for Sunscreen Application**: a. Minimal Sun Exposure: Apply sunscreen in the morning and avoid sun exposure as much as possible. No reapplication necessary. b. High Sun Exposure: Reapply water-resistant sunscreen every two hours, keeping makeup simple due to reapplication. c. Moderate Sun Exposure: Reapply sunscreen over makeup during the day, especially if spending time outdoors. 5. **Reapplication Techniques**: a. Sunscreen sprays: They offer relatively even coverage, but need to be applied in multiple layers. b. Sunscreen powders: They tend to provide less protection. Some may work better than others, but still won't match regular sunscreen. c. Cushion applicators with regular sunscreen: The author recommends using a cushion applicator with a regular sunscreen lotion to reapply over makeup, which seems to be the most effective option. Remember, the amount of sunscreen applied is crucial to the level of protection received. Also, bear in mind that while reapplication is important, utilizing other forms of sun protection (hats, sunglasses, long-sleeve clothing) should not be overlooked.

If I reapply this is what I do and my reasoning is the same. Given you still have decent protection from the good morning application (even if it’s down to 35 spf from 50), reapplying half will hopefully fill in the areas that it was wiped away. 35 is still a decent protection level, so putting some 50 over it should bring it back up to a 40 or 45 I’m thinking. Yes you’re using less but you already have more than half of the sunscreen on from morning application. I don’t know, makes sense to me too.

I loved the cushion applicator/sponge tip! Especially that I use Klairs Soft Airy UV Essence anyways. But re-applying with my fingers would be messy. To put it on the back of my hand would be more convenient and hygienic - then just to rub backs of hands against each other afterward - and voilà, you get and additional sun protection for your hands.

Great tips My hack is to apply good sunscreen then wait 8 mins or so to apply my bb cream, but I only apply like 1 or 2 drops which makes reapplication easier If I wear blush I wipe it off with a makeup wipe and reapply as blush is easy to touch up + mascara and a lip tint Of course it makes it harder when you’ve got a full face on...

I’ve used the cushion compact applicator method for years, and a tip to carry the cushion applicator with you (I don’t like plastic bags, they get messy) is to pop out the refillable part of the cushion foundation from the compact, empty it (remove the actual cushion), and use it to store the applicator. You can get empty cushion foundation cases online or thoroughly wash and sanitise one you’ve used up. I usually wash the case and the sponge every day in the evening and it’s dry and ready to use the next day.

I'm single-handedly bringing wide-brim hats back into fashion! Plus, I wear a "sun jacket" made of UPF 50 material. It's actually a beach coverup with a hood, and I use the hood to shade my face (especially my cheeks) when I'm in strong sun, like while driving home in the afternoon. It seems to work better than my mineral sunscreen!

Oh we are so undone with our clever ideas. I live in Hat and sunscreen. I didn’t apply sunscreen on my ears cuz I had long hair. Well, it took 7 hrs to remove the cancer on my ear. (Each layer removed, then 2 hrs wait for result each time to see if all cells removed. I went though it 3 times, 3 layers). It was an all day deal and still a tender ear 6 months later. Now I’ve added SPF clothes. Had another event on my nose. Cancer is a serious business. Just trying to help out here.

@kittehtoes

Some chemical sunscreen filters can burn and sting around the eyes. Oxybenzone is the worst offender but others can sting as well. Your best bet would be a mineral sunscreen but i understand those can leave a white cast. There are some that don't though! I think bioessance makes one that is completely clear on dark skin.

16:34 maybe that's got something to do with why layering my combo tinted sunscreen on top of a chemical sunscreen burned like hell 🥴 Also, this is the best video I've found on this topic! I have a newfound respect for those who wear makeup and deal with this, especially those who feel pressured to use makeup all the time. I gotta say, even armed with all this knowledge, I'm still pretty intimidated 😣 I'm new to makeup, and this video also brought into question how much do we need to reapply sunscreen, realistically. I'm currently only wearing tinted moisturizer with sunscreen in it as my makeup. Not only for the makeup effect, but also for the iron oxides that help fight hyper-pigmentation. It's part of my skincare routine now. Soon I'm also going to try using Dermablend foundation drops mixed with sunscreen, but in my experience so far tint rubs off on everything like my clothes and my masks so I was told to try putting setting powder over it to prevent that. Haven't tried yet, but I do realize that could mess with the SPF if I'm too rough. I see this is all quite situational though. I think I'll need to try that cushion applicator trick, even if it is with a tinted sunscreen! Thanks so much! 😀

I have oily, acne phone skin. Even without make up my skin would look terrible if I reapply spf every 2 hours in the amount recommended. I can't imagine how disgusting it will look if I put something on top of foundation and powder. It would get VERY very cakey. So if I am on vacation in the summer and I know I will be outside the whole day, I put thick layer of water-resistant spf and fix it with a powder. If I am most of the day inside and just a couple of hours out, i put spf as a primer and just my make-up on top

A trick I use a lot is blotting my face with tissue (either normal Kleenex or the cute anti-shine ones) to get excess oil/sweat off and make me feel fresh and clean. Love the sponge trick, my sunscreen is the mineral Bioderma one and it's super liquidy, everytime I reapply I get both hands covered in it, then I have to struggle to wash it off because that formula is super water resistant. Also I'm MAD this Bioderma SPF 30 spray doesn't sell here in Brazil, my mother would love it for when she's coming home for lunch 😭

So for avobenzone being unstable with zinc and titanium I'm confused as some of the sunscreens I've come to contact with have both and also my mineral foundation uses zinc oxide. Basically if my base layer of sunscreen contains avobenzone, I use zinc oxide containing mineralpowder foundation over it and later in the day use a (for example) avobenzone containing spray sunscreen over it I'm doing more harm than good?

ISDIN's Water Fusion sunscreen is the best to apply over makeup (or on a makeup free face too). I'd apply it over my face before stepping outside the office building and after 10 minutes i'd reapply a little bit of concealer and a bit of blush. Thankfully i rarely needed to reapply my makeup. It didn't disturb it too much and it's clear, so i just patted it over my face with my hands and that was it. I adore it.

Thank you for confirming that, being as oily as I already am and living in high humidity, I will never be willing to apply even close to enough sunscreen to be effective and therefore I need to continue relying on other methods. About 10 years ago, after burning for the last 🤬 time, I decided I'd had enough of trying to rely on sunscreens. Instead, I avoid direct sunlight like it's rabies and rely on physical barriers. Sun protective fabrics like umbrella, chair umbrella, hat, long layers like my birkini, and now, a Coolibar Vermilion face/neck mask when all other methods to avoid direct sunlight have been exhausted. I still apply powder sunscreen in 8 quadrants counting to 30 seconds each, but I don't rely on it -- AT ALL. And as of this past Wednesday, we have 3m prestige 50% "clear" tinting on all our windows to deal with the greenhouse heat in our new house, but I read that it protects against uva+uvb as an added bonus. Next will probably be some sort of tinting for our cars. That needs to wait though, because tinting the whole house was NOT CHEAP! 😉 Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated!
