How to Rebind a Hardcover Book

This video walks you through the process of rebinding a hardcover book. It is intended for complete beginners and will enable you to give a book a new lease of life if, as often happens, the book block is still in good condition but the cover has become battered.

Very nicely done -- it's always a pleasure to see a bone folder used skillfully! One or two things worth mentioning: sometimes a large or heavy book will have "sat down" in the old case for so long that the top spine is flat or even concave. If so, after the old glue materials have been removed the round can be slightly restored by gentle manipulation prior to (or after a light coat of) fresh glue and mull. Less hammering later! For some types of paper used for endpapers, the grain direction is better suited to run vertically. Otherwise, a degree of waviness may appear in the paste down or the inner edge of the fly leaf.

I haven’t watched the video, but I did just finish watching the entire soft to hard recover of “Cry, The Beloved Country” video and am now just browsing your channel while I hold a sleeping baby. We had many books damaged in storage, none valuable, but some irreplaceable. Also, our son was an avid reader and died this spring in a car accident. He had a son on the way he never met. Some of his childhood books are very worn from much reading. I look forward to preserving them for his boy. I’ve subscribed and look forward to the day I can repair some of our books. I also noticed and love your icon. Of your charity, please pray for the soul of our departed one, Jack, known in the church as John.

This was very informative. I'm a book collector that is beginning to look into preserving and saving older books. This video and others like it have really helped me understand the methods and practices of book binders and preservationists. Thank you so much. I am going to use your methods to save a copy of Twenty Thousand Leagues Under The Sea I bought second hand. It is quite old and has had some abusive repairs done to it. I'd like to preserve the cover since it has a very beautiful picture and gold leaf on it but I may have to look for other videos on how to restore a cover and not replace it.

I’ve been watching other channels do similar work with specialized tools and such, but this video makes it all seem less daunting and more achievable (although I do understand that it will require practice). I have a small Bible about 4.5 inches by about 6 inches I bought it under the impression that it was leather bound. However it was a good imitation type leather look vinyl on gauzy type fabric and then on paper. Well it has done what you think so I followed your instruction to remove all the exterior covers and binding. I have some nice rustic thick suede. So where do I go from here? For proper inside pages and what I need for a soft leather but still tough leather cover??? Looking for rustic cover that will develop character with age so not worried about pretty but tough for camping and outdoor life durability. Do I do what’s in this video just use leather and adapt fo floppy soft 3-4 mm thick leather???? I have leather/heavy fabric capable sewing machine up to 18mm thick work

I have a thickish book, the pages of which are separating in sections. The binding was cheaply done. I was hoping not to have to re-cover, but that looks like the only way to save it. Thank you so much.

If you use a layer of artist’s acrylic varnish or medium, it will seal your paste paper. It comes in matt or gloss. You can mix them. (This is not like wood varnish.) it should help your paper’s resistance to moisture but must be very thoroughly dry or it can stick. Once dry it will not dissolve in water.

You can also burnish paste paper which changes the texture

Thanks - I did that once but found that when I pressed the book I rather lost the texture of the paste paper (more than I normally do by pressing it). But that may just have been me! I have also sometimes coated it with a beeswax mixture, which can also help.

I've loved watching your video and as a DIY'er , 1st timer , learned so much that I believe I may be capable of removing the hard cover and preparing the binding for another. You really have a way of expressing the steps in a simplistic manor even I can garner confidence in. However, my thoughts when looking into this project was to completely replace the hard cover w/ a soft leather cover. (it's a fair condition used bible I just bought) I'd also like to ad book ribbons to the book headband. Would you be able to recommend a video of yours that may help me w/these issues. Hello! This was so precise, interesting as well. Can you show me how to enhance a leather like book. It's ready to explode from journaling into it, and still want to add more pages and flip pages, which I do, it's just visual for me. Please make a video if you would. Also, once taken apart and proceed your experience and expertise, after bound, I'd like more room to add more pages. So, I need room. So the spine with probably need to be thicker. Also, after the spine process to heighten the front and back... I'd like to cover the entire book with real leather hide over the thick cover with the leather like (it's very strong because it has a harder top and back cover, with same of the spine.) Then after that procedure, I need to be taught how to apply with the real leather. Not needed to be perfect. It can hang over a tad, eventually I know it'll hang over a tad and soften over the edge of the paper side of pages. Tysm you are a great teacher. In jesus' name. God bless you more 💙🌼

Wonderful thank you. I wish my clamps said "record" on them, almost as in the "Records Dept.", hee hee. But more seriously I must make a glue container with the rod inside! I do have a heat press but am yet to afford letter sets. This being the case (so to speak) it dawned on me that my wife has a sewing machine that will embroider digital files on cloth. It likes to behave correctly when embroidering cloth with a thin interfacing so, perhaps, we might apply double-sided iron-on feather-lite interfacing, embroider, then iron on paper (since the paper can't be on the cloth, yet, when the embroidery hoop goes on). Something like that... anyway, thanks you again so very much.

I am enjoying your channel. Growing up I lived in the stacks of our college library. I am a Graphic artists, so you have created countless ideas in my head… when you labeled this book you mentioned a gold foil Method, and I haven’t seen it in any of your books. Is it at all possible to show? My first Commercial job had an associated photo studio that produced such things when needed, I would be currious how it could be done.

Great video! My puppy tore off the cover of my recently purchased paperback, so this will be a great way to not only repair it, but improve it! It’s part of a set. I was thinking it would be nice to have artwork that goes across the spines. Would it be best to have especially large labels, or would that ridge be too noticeable?

Great video. Quick question, I missed what you did with the ends of the book cloth on the text block. Were they just glued all the way down to the text block or did you clip the ends to remove. When you start to build the cover to attach it seems like the coth ends are gone. Thanks again, God Bless.

I'm hoping to try to restore a couple of old family books, but am a complete novice. I'm also a little confused. It seems that the mull on the first book is glued to the spine of the block, which is fine. But the mull flaps are only attached to the end paper (flyleaf), not the cover. Thus, once the end paper is glued to the cover, only the crease in the end paper is holding the cover to the block. And the cover in the second book only seems to be attached to the block by the creases on either side of the Oxford tube. Aren't the tabs of the mull usually glued to the inside of the cover boards?

I think with a book THAT old, it might be best to invest in a professional restoration... or at least restoration-quality materials. 🤔 I'm not an expert at all, but all my history-lover instincts scream against using regular PVA on it, for example. 😅

Ma'am, how do you "tighten" a loose text block? Do you need to completely re-sew the signatures?

I f the stitching is intact, then gluing the mull on and pulling it somewhat tighter should help to tighten it.

Is there a way to do this and salvage the part of the endpaper that is glued to the original cover? I have a book on which a family tree is printed on the endpaper, but the book needs rebound.

I am just getting into bookbinding but I have an idea which I hope can help. You mentioned his family tree sentimental. Perhaps once you are done pulling the pages out of the old book cut off the back cover. I assume you’ve already tried pulling just the paper off but sometimes it doesn’t work. Then do one of two things listed below. First create an entire new cover. This means using the back cover or adding something else like cardboard to make it more sturdy or do you think the spine in front cover of a new book cover and using this as a back cover. With sturdiness being added if you deem necessary. This way you can still have this as your back cover or reverse it and make your front cover if you want. The second idea I think is more beginner friendly and easier. Cut off the back part of the old cover one of the book has been removed and attach that cover to the new cover. Just use some glue and glue it in. This might make your book more chunky which for some could be an issue but as you mentioned it is sentimental this might be OK. Especially if you buy a cover that’s a little bit bigger so you don’t have to worry about the spy of the new book being ripped. There’s also could be a good idea if you are creating the cover yourself so you have a little bit more leeway with the measurements of the spine. Keep in mind I am a beginner at this craft so this might not be a professional way of doing it but hopefully this can be of use. Also I am legally blind

Hello, Annesi, hope you are doing well and good health! I would like to ask you how should i proceed when i have a torn out signature. Actually iam reparing an old piano score book and some pages are torn out just in the middle, that part where we sew.. how should i repair it? I mean, i use japonese paper on it? Or should i separate all the pages and glue as you did on "How to Repair & Rebind a Damaged Paperback as a Hardcover Book" Thank you so much in advance

Personally I would do the second option. Separate book where you need to put in these missing pages and do it like that. At least for me as a beginner it would be easier and I wouldn’t have to worry as much about the book not being sturdy. Or the page is falling out again because they are not properly put in. Guys dont destroy your books, use heat from a hair dryer or heat gun to loosen the adhesive. Heat will turn the glue back into a liquid and make it so you can just pull the pages apart without damaging the book at all.
