I dont get it why are you not using the diverging diamond interchange instead of the regular diamond one . I use them in my city where there is heavy traffic and it works just fine no highway backup
@@sachindalal6394 Probably because that was the interchange that came with the map? Rebuilding it to become a DDI around existing houses would probably be a pain I imagine.
People tell you about lane mathematics and Biffa gets comments about how lane mathematics doesn’t happen irl 😂 There is just no pleasing everyone haha Definitely loved seeing your part! You and the rest of the builders 😆
I know it is a small detail, but I want to thank you for straightening main street over the highway. I'm impressed by the length you went in the immersion by insuring that street cars could realistic go up the Highland and the line of sight for the university. You got yourself a new subscriber.
Love the series! :) Biffa just approach traffic fixes differently and there is no one right way to do it. I also think it is refreshing to learn more ideas and options how to fix my city traffic issues.
@@LeeHawkinsPhoto perils of it being a game and it not always behaving as logic dictates. Your style endevours to make it behave, whilst Biffa just throws dedicated traffic lanes and forced turns to tame the beast. Don't take us commentors to heart. We love all the time and effort you creators put into making these videos. Cheers
the main idea of the game is "less lane is better than more lanes" u can easy to handle the traffic. I always start my new expressway with just only two lane one-way highway with a space in median for lane expansion or landscaping. more lane is useful at the intersection of the expressway exit ramp for a better traffic flow and queuing
Biffa is very confident and well practiced at what he does, but his solutions are pretty formulaic and not always optimal. I tend to prefer Lee's solutions. They seem to be better tailored to the specifics of each situation.
Everyone has their own approach to solving problems, expansion and improving overall growth. It's the melding of the different contributions and solutions that makes 5B1C such a great series. I get TONS of ideas for my own cities from you guys -Keep up the great work!
Oh man, yeah, that was overdue! I should have done that from the get-go. Having those two ramps so close was gonna be brutal over time. I don't think anyone would've designed that interchange any other way IRL. It made that neighborhood across the street so much easier to plug into too!
Lee, that was a very diplomatic response to the comments. There's a saying that I think everyone will recognize - "There is more than one way to skin a cat.". Now, don't get me wrong, I am 100% AGAINST skinning any cats (I love cats). But the point here is that there is more than one way to fix traffic in Cities: Skylines. A lot of viewers know Biffa's approach (roundabouts anyone?). As a smaller channel, not many know yours - yet. Just give it time. Your style is different and different is good, in my opinion. Seeing it done a different way has given me inspiration in my own cities since discovering your channel. So, thank you. Great video, as always.
I love seeing different approaches to handling traffic. This gives me more ideas on how to handle traffic in my own cities that I have not considered. It is like learning there are multiple correct answers to a puzzle.
I think you're doing a great job! You use lane mathematics in a different way than Biffa, which is helpful. I like how you really think through your placement of roads and where traffic is going, and I've learned quite a bit from you in your first week in 5B1C. Thank you for all your hard work!! And in the last episode you did, with the trade school project, Flight of the Valkyries was playing while you sorted out the road system--hilarious while dealing with topographical issues!!!
I see you regularly doing this thing where you add temporary roads at a perpendicular that seems really handy for all sorts of purposes. putting the helicopter depots at/near the school would be neat! call it training
I really learned a lot of great new techniques watching this. And the way you took care of slopes and sightlines and even traffic was very satisfying. Definitely gonna binge your channel this week, I'd love to see a city you'd design 0-100k. Keep it up!
I've got an OLLLLLD series where I do 0 to 80k, but it's all a grid for the most part, not following the terrain a ton. I just started a new series....Reddington, which is all about following the terrain.
Untill now I only watch 5b1c at city planners and czardus channel. Started watching your videos through the playlist and im not disappointed. Your videos and this series in general is one of the most entertaining things I watched in a while. Keep up this amazing work. :)
Really enjoyed watching your round in 5b1c! And I must say I have learned a thing or two from watching you tackle that traffic, just as I learned stuff from Biffa. A different way to do something, doesn't mean it's wrong! Looking forward to your next round!
I am staying for both premieres. Its really a great feeling when the class you were suposed to wake up early for gets cancelled. So i can stay up late for 5b1c
It really is interesting to see different approaches to traffic fixes. Obviously your method works! So, allways good to know, that there are options out there and not only one golden path. It shakes things up in a good way!
Hi. I totally understand you got a little bit salty over those Biffa-comments - especially because this is not a lane mathematics issue. The 15:30 and 16:30 lane connectors are a sufficient solution though a little bit brutal but if the goal is to have roughly equal amounts of vehicles per hour in each lane they do their job. But if you take into account that right turning traffic is clearing the highway off-ramp much quicker (unless it is stuck behind left-turning a few vehicles) the goal post changes and not allowing right-turning traffic on the left lane becomes an option ... a less brutal option. Btw I love you university tram line ... perhaps little district bus loops in Bayview and on the campus could give more people access to it and increase the ridership.
Hey Lee, just want to say "Thank you!" ^^ I think the most interesting part of this (a) collab, is to see, how different people address the problems that occur. Keep it up!
"Then you turn off despawning, and see how badly you did anyway." - Lol. That one hit hard. To be fair though, I think CSL really overdoes the truck generation. Industries does not generate a truck every 5 seconds.
Great episode. Heck I've found your techniques work for me, roundabout just seem to cause me trouble, the last city the passenger cars were driving thru the already crowded industrial section just to avoid a roundabout, returning it to a simple intersection solved the problem. Kudos to small RU-vidr like you with great ideas
I think a diverging diamond interchange would have made more sense. Traffic turning right wouldn't go through a traffic light at all and traffic turning left would only go through one. Also the curves would be much smoother so there is less stopping.
There isn't much traffic going across the highway bridge. So you could switch to a 2x2 on the bridge itself and keep the 3x3 as a dedicated lane from the highway to the first node or intersection heading to the port
Loving your style, Lee, and I love your explanations of how you’re using the mods. It makes me sad that your main series (more money less traffic) is fully vanilla, I really want to see more of you using mods- traffic manager, node controller, etc etc. Definitely got a subscriber from me. Thanks 5b1c for introducing me to a great builder!
YAY! I'm so happy you're enjoying it so much! Hopefully you'll swing by and check out Reddington, where I will definitely be using more mods! It's really hard to do MMLT without the mods after I get used to having them again!
“I definitely don’t want to obstruct the sight-lines to the trade school, so I’ll protect it by working on this park right here.” Immediately proceeds to plop a hospital down right smack in the middle of the sight-line and says, “This hospital will have a great view!” 🤦🏻♂️
True on both counts 😁 he has the reputation for it, but his popularity eclipses a lot of people who may have more in their bag of tricks. He’s a class act all the way though, both on and off screen...and I’m glad that a guy as good as him is the biggest creator.
Love the way you work with the game, thinking of details that many others don't. This was refreshing and really fun this week :D But you know you need to rebuild that interchange to get it working properly in the game ;) Its also fun to se another builder thinking of the traffic and wanting to fix it :)
I'm genuinely waiting for this. Now is 01.39 AM and i suppose to work at 8 AM. But this deserve to be waited. And the rant just HAHAHAHAHA... Sooo funny... keep up your good works Lee. You doing good mate
Indeed! IRL they have limited budgets, and concrete is crazy expensive to maintain, so they try hard to avoid overkill. I like to keep it real that way!
I really love that you are part of 5b1c! Thank you for your videos (ALL of them, not just this one or the 5b1c ones!), I really appreciate and enjoy your content :) Generally, I must say I enjoy this season even more than the last one, i really like how all of you guys just work on generally the same area and not splitting off into different parts of the map rightaway (I commented about that on one of Phil's episodes in season 1, if I remember correctly) - feels more like "actual multiplayer" to me this way and I love it :) In regards to "the Biffa case": Just as a disclaimer: I know, my comment is getting really long again... I know :D that's who I am. Also, I have nothing against Biffa or anything like that, the following is not meant to be "attacking" him or as any form of negativity. I criticize the way people view him, I do NOT directly criticize him or the way he plays the game! So with my unnecessarily long disclaimer out the way: I think Biffa is really not the sort of "traffic guru" people make him out to be. He just happens to have a series of videos where he applies (basic) traffic fixes to maps that he gets sent by his viewers. In my opinion, these fixes are not necessarily "the best" or "most useful" ways to deal with traffic, and certainly they are not *the only ones* (again: I have nothing against Biffa or anything like that!). As I see it, he essentially knows the "basic C:S traffic textbook, vol.1" very well and applies those basic rules, which in most cases is enough to at least significantly improve the situations he faces (which sometimes seem a bit exaggerated/extreme to me, but who am i to tell). But there are, as we can see in this video and many others, many different ways to approach traffic problems and often many solutions that have a very good impact. And sometimes there are situations that require a little more than just "lane mathematics" and roundabouts. What I personally really want to see from "fixing/handling traffic" videos is the actual thoughts going into it, some considerations going beyond just that one congested intersection and a little deeper insight into why high-traffic situations happen (ingame and irl) and how we deal with them. Not just "chuck a roundabout here, some lane maths there, oh that seems to work [at least a little better than before]! Therefore Biffa MUST be a traffic genius!" ;) And once again, for the millionth time, just to make it really clear: I have nothing against Biffa, I just think that people tend to "idolize" and "idealize" him a little more than they should. Sometimes to me it seems, whenever there's a traffic backup, people start posting stuff like "You should ask Biffa how to fix it" or "Biffa would have a lot to say!" or "Just send the map to Biffa, he'll fix it for you...". And I mean, I get that he's a popular RU-vidr and his traffic fixing series is viewed by a lot of people and all, but yeah.. that doesn't mean he invented "lane mathematics" or roundabouts, and that also doesn't mean his solutions are the "be all, end all" type of things. Discussions are always welcome :D Anyways.. again, thanks a lot for your videos, I really enjoy them! Your content is much appreciated :) Now I'll watch Egg's episode, and I'm really curious, since I havem't seen any if their videos before,m so let's go :D
Hahaha... Well, I have to admit I was watching you fix and manage traffic while thinking to myself "Hang on, this isn't what I learned over at Biffa's channel, how does this work?" And, yeah... It obviously works... Soooo.... How did you do that again? I'll have to watch this again (you were a bit quick on the ol' explain there)... :D
Nah...Imperatur will be working on the big interchange where Concord Blvd is mostly disconnected...that would relieve some congestion here at Main I think...

Great work on all of your episodes! As a new subscriber I'm really glad that I got to discover your channel through this series!
I would be interested to know if the dynamic lane switching AI is turned on in TMPE. If the AI is not turned on, it could've helped out with the lane situation too of the cars not using all available lanes. I want to echo that there are different fixes to everything and lane maths is not the only way lol. Lane maths does works very well with vanilla fixes in particular... but we aren't limited to vanilla fixes because we've got mods! I see those comments on every cities skylines video too haha.
Lol yes you did 😂 I didn’t want to embarrass you though...I’m happy you stuck around and left a comment again after 😁 I did create that back interchange around the hill, and I added the crossover to 11th Street to add another way around. The bummer with this map is that the geography is just not favorable to connecting across that highway without serious changes to the topography. It may need to be done down the line though...it could be unavoidable!
Hi Lee. Some advice, you might want to avoid placing services (like the police station and medical clinic) on avenues. When a service's vehicle leaves its building, it can only turn right because the median. This could end up forcing a service vehicle to travel a long distance before it can turn around and greatly impair the services effectiveness.
Honestly, I just wanted to slap one somewhere so that I had one. If I worked that neighborhood again, I'd totally move things around when I build on the other side of the street most likely. I was in such a rush to turn things over to the next guy I didn't have time to think everything through 100%.
Thank you! And great question! So, I really just don't think the ramp needed three lanes just yet. First, there was no phase on the traffic light where rights would have been clear to go without conflict. Second, with the right lane assignments, it was totally doable to balance traffic to use both lanes pretty evenly, which makes for a shorter cycle. And third, the 3-lane ramp would have taken up more space that I'm not sure I had. Mainly I just don't think the traffic is that bad at this intersection...and I don't know that it'll get that much worse. But things change...we'll see what happens. :-)
I would make the intersection that highway exit ramp into 3-4 lane road for more traffic line-up, if it is not available to extend the length of the ramp
That's probably where this is going...but I'm gonna hold off for as long as possible on that for two reasons: 1. It shows people more alternatives rather than just a simple quick fix, where sometimes a simple quick fix is not good enough. and 2. traffic is not super duper bad at this ramp really...not yet anyway. I like going more with a realistic fix, and IRL I don't think they'd jump straight to a three lane ramp...not just yet. What I wish I'd done is use Node Controller to widen that intersection up a bit to ease the turn radius. Since there are no pedestrians in that area, that's a totally conceivable option.
I'm sure you know this but have you checked the advanced AI in TM:PE? I've caught it reset to the defaults (pretty much no AI) and have had to crank it back up to get the cars to be at least somewhat rational. You never know... :)
Biffa's fans could be a little bit of a headache for real. They also attack somebody before because he exposed some of the tricks he do in traffic fixing. No hate for biffa but his community is a little hectic sometimes. I know little kids are hard to manage because i also have 2 little siblings.
Maybe we can use a roundabout with pass-through lanes on the problematic interchange. Although I really commend your way of managing the traffic and creating roads. This just opens up my perspective.
😞 I can only wish! They keep building so much along the very corridors the subway would serve! The infra is already in place, waiting to be resurrected under the Veterans Memorial Bridge and Tower City...they just need to bring it down Euclid and Superior and run it down W 25th and Detroit...I could swear that the Hope Memorial Bridge has a subway on it too...it’s sort of maddening that this was never used!
Great question! I really think a DDI would be inappropriate here because of the near intersections on the west side of the bridge (Dale Drive especially). I would have to have a signal there to handle traffic getting backed up waiting to jump in, and it would be tough to find the queuing capacity for all of it in that little neighborhood. Also, I think it would really be overkill. The worst situation here is that northbound ramp with all the trucks heading East on Main Street. It’s just a matter of having the ramp long enough and the intersection favorable enough that trucks can get out expeditiously. In this video I’m taking a minimalist approach...trying to avoid building more than I need at every step...because it forces you to think more critically. The traffic at this intersection isn’t good, but it’s not super bad, really. But I want everyone to see the steps in working through the problem so they can use them to make small tweaks at a really bad intersection where they will add up to a good fix.
