This is the BEST instructional video on youtube for starter rebuild. Very detailed in real time. The only omission is how to clean a dirty, but useable , commutator. Question: can the brush plate assembly and the solenoid be purchased seperately? THANK YOU for uploading this GREAT video. You have just added another subscriber. CHEERS!

80 grit sandpaper on the comm. It's cheaper just to buy the kit, then shelf what you don't want. It's smarter just to use the parts we give you. The job will be done right the first time and you won't have to go back later to do again.

I need to replace the 'water' seal between the solenoid and main housing as well as the grommet described at 3:42. Both are brittle and broken. Can I purchase that as an add-on in the kit?

I have a 2006 Impala LT 3.9 automatic. Do you have a starter rebuild video for this vehicle? I need to order a starter rebuild kit but, I want to make sure I know how to do it, since your video is different than my starter. Awesome video, Mike. Thanks so much.

You can take those Etorx off with a six-point socket, at least I was able to. On mine it had three that required a 4 mm 6 point socket that worked perfectly. It's a good thing because my Etorx socket was too big to get into the tight space.

Thank you. Great comment. We have been using deep wells, here in the shop. When they first came out, we bought a handful of in expensive regular sockets and grinded (ground?) the fat part out of the way. Some we just tapped into place or left a little crooked and applied torq anyway. For the most part, they're not extremely tight like a Ford starter.

Can I buy the outer planetary somewhere? It has 6 of the teeth that are ground down. Unless it will be fine.

If you buy the kit from us, add in the notes that you need one. Make sure you order the right kit with the visual ID section on our web site.

@@rebuilderinabox what is a needle nose bearing? There is what looks like small bearings on the old one. The smaller diameter bearing just falls out of the hole and the bigger one fits but it seems to be tighter on the shaft than the original one.

@@chrisyoung8759 Tight is good, as long as it rotates freely. It can be loosened up a little by sanding the shaft with #80 grit, then 10w40 oil and white with grease. Also install the shaft, tap on aluminum housing and move, repeat.

Ordered this last week, it arrived today. When I installed the solenoid, it seems to have pushed the gear that engages the flywheel out a bit, 1/4" or so... It doesn't seem to be all the way in the retracted position. The plastic fork from the solenoid to the starter drive gear is in correctly. Is that normal or will I have it partially hitting the flywheel when the vehicle is running/already started??

Make sure the bendix is a match to the old one. If it is, something must be installed wrong like upside down fork or solenoid clip not behind the fork.

Took the starter to Autozone, just for a test. They said everything ran/tested real good. It just looks too far out on the gear, I'm going to take it apart 1 more time to double check, but the kit was perfect and easy to install. Can't load a picture here to show you what I mean... Took a measurement. The gear sticks out 5/16" past the housing when not engaged. Then there is about 9/16" of open shaft before getting to that retainer ring that goes around the split ring in the groove on the shaft. It may be fine as is, I don't have a reference to look at.

+David Winklepleach. According to GM eSI, this starter is a Hitachi S14-100B, used on diesel engine only and is a different animal. Take it apart to find out what is wrong as the brushes are usually to part that wear out on high mileage vehicles. ASE Master Tech / Retired

Junk flywheel or rust on shaft or broken or improperly installed snap rings on shaft. Check ign switch, check splash cover if has one.
