This is a long video and I tried to make it as detailed as possible. There are some sections about HVDA conversions you can skip over. Please also understand that a video like this takes at least 10 hours to shoot, adjust lighting, color correct and get the right angles to make points clear to the viewer. IT'S FREE. In return if you can subscribe that would be awesome and much appreciated. My Facebook page redirect is www.transmissionbook.com If a transmission is video worthy usually the owner has time on his project because the transmission will be in the shop for a few months. This is a full time business, not a hobby. I manufacture/ build new transmissions and parts. I get a great deal of comments that I delete when a person says "do a Corvette ZF 6 speed video" or something similar. I don't have access to every transmission and I'm not about to purchase a transmission because someone demands I do a free video for them. That's rude. If you are interested in working on doing a video for a particular transmission contact me . My info is in this channel's about section. Shift Fast, Paul

I appreciate the videos that you make no matter what make/model transmission you rebuild. It gives an insight on knowledge that one can use to rebuild their own or what goes into rebuilding a transmission. I rebuilt my first transmission about 4 years ago. Watching your videos helped me gain the confidence in understanding the steps to taking these things apart. I was working on an L-series Toyota pickup transmission (L52 transmission from a 1982-1983 Toyota Pickup 4wd). I have used these rebuild kits that you've mentioned in this video (same bearing manufacture as seen in the video). Didn't know that there can be some defects in the kits for the synchros until you mentioned it in this video. Could be a possibility that when I did put the L52 back together, that shifting into gears didn't feel smooth (specifically 3rd gear, after some time it did feel okay). New components that went into that transmission were bearings, synchros, keys and springs, c-clips, gaskets and seals. Looking forward into taking apart this Toyota R151F turbo transmission I currently have as it whines like it has straight cut gears. Thanks for another great vid Paul! Keep bangin' those gears through the windshield!

Thanks so much for taking the time to write this. The warped rings in the kit will exhibit the same problem you were having. As the rings start to seat in they will grab the gear and synchronize better.

I don't have a W58, and unlike a lot of the people in the comments, I don't have a question about how to solve problems with a transmission that I have, I just come here because i love how technical this channel is, and how detailed you are in all your work, even going so far as to give extra tips in reassembly etc. where a lot of other guys in different fields would never give away tips for free. Thanks so much for all your videos, by far and away the best channel to see how all these transmissions work, and seeing how to disassemble and reassemble, and seeing how each part interacts and what wear etc. to look for. Thanks from Australia :)

Thanks to varies other videos and especially yours I was able to completely take apart piece by piece and reassemble a transmission by myself. It really isn’t as bad as people think as long as your organized and take the time to actually understand how each piece works. It’s just the little details that can be skipped or forgotten that can cause huge issues. And a month ago I didn’t even know how a manual transmission works.

Mr. Paul, I just want to say thank you so much for putting these videos together. I could not have done my FIRST EVER manual trans. rebuild on my Toyota w56c trans without you. I am a Toyota 4wd lover that had a smoked input shaft bearing. Common with these trans I think? I been nursing it along for the last 50k miles = louder than you can even imagine. I consider myself a pretty experienced hobby mechanic but your video was simply the best resource I could have ever stumbled upon. I have a press and a couple pullers, one more trip to harbor freight for a big bearing puller (like the biggest one you used on the press) and I was in business. I mean this as the highest form of compliment when I say: you sir, are the Bob Ross(the famous painter on PBS) of transmissions. Simply the best, detailed and all encompassing source of info I could have hoped for. I was gonna go buy a manual, but I didn't have to becuase YOU are better that the book and even included torque values, bonus! Man.. keep doing what your doing. I would love to buy you a drink and a steak dinner if I could. Let me know if you are even in Oregon. Rock steady amigo. Thank you.

@@GearBoxVideo Classic Ross, well said. The trans seems to working quite nicely after about a 100 miles.. Only one issue that rears its head now and then. upshifting from 3rd to 4th: Doesn't seem like the shift ring wants to fully engage over the gear. like there is not enough throw in the fork. when i let the clutch out the gear spins and i get a grind. Hard to say if it's just the cheapo Sta-lube GL4 I am using for break in or something else. Seems like i has something to do with the gear spining at the 1:1 ratio? every other gear engagement feels great. Up and down shifting. Any thoughts?

Just by watching your videos thank you so much. I am a certified mechanic but never worked on gearboxes because here in NZ it is a specailized trade. In all the Work Shops iv worked in, if their was a problem with the transmission, we just removed it from the car and send it away to get the work done. THANK YOU so much! I must have just watched this video and part 1 at least 20 times while rebuilding my late model W58 (1993-1998) transmission. The fit on mine was even tighter than this one, and there were some minute differences like double-cone synchros on some of the gears. The project took me two weeks of nights and weekends type tinkering, waiting on parts, and struggle bus dilemmas like having to wait on buddies to use their press. If it wasn't for your video I don't know if I would have ever been able to finish this project, but now I feel like an expert on the W58! Being a performance auto technician by trade, I have never really dug this far into the guts of a manual transmission and it was a really educational experience for me!

Love your videos Paul. If you recall I asked about Ford toploaders and you said at first you didn't really work on them due to the lack of quality parts. Since I was having troubles with mine I sent it off the David Kee...and got it back and installed and drove the car home from the shop and it worked...thank goodness. I had the grinding issue with the 3-2 downshift. You said send it to you but that was after it had been shipped to Kee. Would have loved to have to go through it. Next time if there is a next time. I get to test it at the track the end of Oct so we'll see how that goes. Again thanks for the great videos.

Hey. Ur in my opinion are one of the most knowledgeable people on transmissions. Im going to have to probably rebuild my R150f tranny and was wondering if this video would be good to go by? Cause they are similar transmissions. Also my tranny is having problems going in first gear before its really warmed up. Now its getting hard to go into second gear and third. But after driving for an hour it goes into gear just fine. Also if the truck isnt running,it goes into gear just fine. I was thinking it was the synchros, but i have no problem shifting into gear while moving. I heard that a bad pilot bearing that sticks, could be the culprit. Which sounds likely.

Thanks for the reply. Cause i know you have to be a busy guy. Usually the guys with knowledge are. Well as of yesterday,my transmission started making a rattling sound. It does it in neutral, and also in 1st 2nd 3rd 5th. I definitely sounds like a bearing. It doesn't do it in 4th. I read that if it doesn't do it in 4th than its probably the counter shaft bearings, cause 4 th gear is the 1:1 and the counter shaft doesn't turn. On this r150f tranny. Luckily, my buddy has a extra tranny that i am fixing to swap out. I work 90 miles from where i live and didn't want to take the chance on making it worse or getting stuck on the side of the road so i called in and took off, and i am fixing to swap it out. But i am going to have to rebuild mine and give his back or trade him or whatever. Times are tuff and i will have to rebuild the tranny myself. I have another friend that has presses and bearing pullers and everything i think ill need. Is there any specific tools that you think i might need? Also what rebuild kit would you use ? Hopefully its just bearings and seals and thats all ill need cause after looking on the internet i can get a bearing and seal kit for around 200 . From Cobra transmissions. Ive never done this and so im not sure on who to order from. Where do you usually get your parts from? I know i need to use oem bearings and parts from what everyone says,so thats what i looked for. And it will be a couple of weeks before i can order anything,and i want to disassemble it before i start ordering anything. So just tell ur thoughts on who you get ur parts from or reliable people to order from, and any advice you might have for a first timer on rebuilding the r150f. Thank you for your time.

@steadyeddie7453
@steadyeddie7453 2 года назад
I second your request. I just need to replace the input shaft on my W59. I watched the video carefully and think there is still a lot of disassembly. Looks like both the main and countershaft need to move forward enough to spread them apart. But there's a lot of parts keeping that from happing easily.
@steadyeddie7453
@steadyeddie7453 2 года назад
Taking another look I see the input shaft and the 4th speed gear are one and what is keeping them from being removed is the 4th gear and bearing on the countershaft. So, if I can use a puller behind the 4th counter gear to pull the gear and bearing off, then the input shaft will simply slip off. Then I need to figure out how to press the counter gear and bearing back on the countershaft. More to come.

I just watched this series for the third time. I learn something new each time. I have a 1982 Toyota Pickup (22R) RWD with a W50 that pops out of fifth gear. I've completely replaced the shifter, bushings, and seat with all new parts, but that didn't fix the problem. Everything else works great. It shifts smoothly, no noise, no leaks, it just pops out of fifth. It snaps into gear when shifting and then, usually after several minutes, pops out - sometimes under load, sometimes when decelerating. I'm wondering if there's a problem with the gear and/or the slider? I don't want to tear it down, but I think I'm going to have to. What should I be looking for when I'm in there? Thanks again for putting these videos together, and for taking the time to show and tell everything so clearly.

You can't bench test the gear train because the case maintains the center to center clearance. So your comment makes zero sense.
@GearBoxVideo
@GearBoxVideo 3 года назад
We don't allow video links here and again... the guy in the video is accomplishing nothing. Spacing and shift rail alignment are constrained by the cases. Ends of the rails are held by the cases, shafts are held by the cases. So again the guy is accomplishing nothing other than making sure he has everything back in the proper place which if you know what your are doing this is not needed. I've done over 100 of these type of builds in 40 years of business. Never an issue. Also you don't have to check that the sliders and hubs shift when it's all assembled. That should be done before you assemble the gear train. Shifting the assemblies with no rails in place as in the video can also cause the assembly to over shift and cause the struts to pop out. Especially on the 3-4 since the input is not held in place. So again this is meaningless and a poor way of checking your work and can also cause issues and a reason why I don't do this.

Why don't you mention anything about checking Clarence is between the gears before removal and upon pressing them on during installation? Just wondering if you just didn't show it or you have a reason for not doing so because the factory service manual says to and I'm getting ready to rebuild a w56 myself and don't want to make any mistakes or go through any extra unnecessary steps.
@GearBoxVideo
@GearBoxVideo 4 года назад
Think it thru. How are you going to adjust clearances? What happens with these specs in books is that if you have a failure you need to change parts. In the event for example something welded to a shaft or a gear was obviously worn to the eye. You may want to check a clearance if you think a thrust flange may be worn or still usable.The transmission in the video was in great shape. I guess I know how end play should be and if a surface appeared heated or galled up you may want to check for excessive endplay and change the part out. Some transmissions have different size snap rings. However it's hard to get these parts now. So for the most part you can't adjust clearances but just check them. So again you really don't need to check clearances in a transmission that you just want to freshen up but if you are changing some major parts you may want to check your endplay. But again finding shims and snap rings is not easy for these. Thanks for watching.

I have so many questions + concerns after having to get a rebuilt gearbox shipped halfway across the USA to put into my old gen1 Tacoma with 341k miles at 26 years on the original clutch parts... the local transmission shop that was well paid to diagnose FAILED to properly diagnose this gen1 Tacoma when it started having odd noises at 290k miles, they had no clue with my verbal description about when it was happening and what it was sounding like.. they just said nothing found everything in good working order.. when obviously it was NOT now the rebuilt R150F is having oddities that the original gearbox did not ever have that i recall after 1/4 century of driving this pickup any content created for the R150F that i can learn more and field some queries I have driven manual Toyota gearboxes since 1990 in 4 different vehicles, i don't believe any were the W58 presented here but i sure enjoyed learning about the innards from your excellent presentation MT or BUST 8^}

I'm currently rebuilding (my first transmission) an Isuzu MUA5, which is surprisingly similar to this W58 in layout, construction and size. One question: some of the dog-teeth are slightly rounded (I am working with 2 transmissions and picking the best parts from each), I have removed any burrs from the dog-teeth, but I was wondering if you would advise "sharpening" the teeth, or leaving them as they are. Another question: The remote shifter housing has a shaft that slides between two bushings, and a seal at one end. There is a tiny amount of play in the bushings, which I gather is normal/necessary since it is the same on the 3 I have. Greasing the bushings/seal: Should I use a Moly grease (or assembly grease) under the assumption that I want an oil-compatible grease---the shifter does get splashed with a lot of oil from the trans---or go with something like PM600 "Military Grease" Liquid-o-Ring which seems to be exceptional at many things, such as staying in place and not mixing with oil.

@@GearBoxVideo Yesterday I got most of the gear cluster assembled on the Center Plate, then found that my rebuild kit was missing the rear Counter Shaft bearing (the last part to be installed before shifting hardware): The OEM counter shaft front and center bearings are big roller bearings (025-52NX), whereas the kit came with deep-groove ball bearings for both. The original counter shaft bearings all feel good. While I wait to hear back from the company I bought the kit from, would you lean towards new deep-groove bearings, or reusing 3 bearings that were in the trans? My motive for rebuilding is that the trans in my truck leaks and whines (in all but 4th). I have no idea what the trans I'm working on sounded like, but I am obviously biased towards thinking that the bearings need replaced.

Hey bud, please help. I just had a friend replace the bearings in My R150f Toyota tranny. I pulled the cases off and took him the rest cause he had a press for the bearings. I got it back and he had a rod turned wrong, but i clocked it correctly and made sure it shifted fine. Long story short. I got it installed and it seems like it's not coming all the way out if reverse. I can shift fine through all the gears,but when i put it in reverse then back to first it acts like it binds. Ive been messing with it for a little. And i can shift in second from reverse and it will come out of reverse. U just cant go from reverse to first. Once i shift into second gear first, i can go into first. Or i can go from reverse, straight to second,and its fine. It just seems like reverse isn't disengaging all the way. No i did pour all my mt-90 down through the top and i also poured Lucas oil stabilizer down it first. I thought taht since that stuff is thick, it was making it stick in reverse,but i drove it around for a little and it still does it. So i think that reverse arm or fork isnt pushing the gear back far enough and when i shift into 2nd it somehow bumps reverse out. Could he have somehow left out something on that reverse fork, or there be some kind of adjustment on that fork? Please help. Your the smartest tranny guy i know.

Also. There is a little oil pipe, that fits up in that case ,and it kinda lines up with the counter shaft. Its a little small plastic funnel looking thing. I really don't see what good it does,and mine broke all to pieces so i just left it out. Will that hurt anything? Like i say, my newly rebuilt transmission (r150f) isnt disengaging reverse completely.

I honestly don't know what you could have done other than make sure the interlocks are properly installed. All this should be tested out of the car on the bench with no oil in it.
@todhowell5049
@todhowell5049 Год назад
@@GearBoxVideo Yeah i ask if he tested it, and he said no because he had lost that interlock spring that goes in through the top. So i had to get one, and when i put it in, it wouldn't shift in any forward gear , thats when i noticed that he had that 3rd rod down,clicked 180° out and the cut in that shaft was pointed towards the inside gears. So i just took out the springs and puched out that roll pin and turned the rod ,to where it was supposed to be. He said he had put all the detents in and the balls and springs in from the side,so i didn't take any of them out when i turned the shaft. But after i got it turned and all the springs back in. I shifted it into 1st and 2nd and 3rd and 4th and fifth. I didn't look around and see if reverse came out. I just knew that when it wouldn't shift and that 3rd rod down was clocked wrong that all those detents and that 2nd one down with the pin in it , was jammed up. So after turning that rod then all of them would shift. And it did shift in and out of fifth and reverse is on the same rod and it shifts into reverse fine, it just doesn't come out of reverse like it should. I plan on driving it for a week, then tearing back into it next weekend. Cause its on my daily driver. But you think it might be in those detents or maybe something on that bottom rod that isnt letting it travel far enough? Also, thank you for replying,cause it has me freaking out.

@todhowell5049
@todhowell5049 Год назад
@@GearBoxVideo Ok. Thanks for replying to me. Ive been studying the sch. drawing on my transmission for the reverse and the shifting rods. I believe if any of the interlocks were still out of place, it would have a shifting problem. And it doesn't, it goes into every gear. Ive been looking at the reverse linkage and the rod for reverse and it seems like that linkage isn't traveling far enough back on the rod ,inturn not letting that reverse fork to push the reverse gear out far enough. Like if there could be a washer or something that sits behind that reverse linkage,where it bolts to that plate? I didn't know if you know of anything that would set that reverse linkage out futher. Or where it pivots off of that piece below it ,to make that arm move out and disengage reverse? All the drawings that i look at, have all the parts, but dont show any mounting hardware,like screws and bolts and washers or spacers. So i was hoping you would say, yeah theres a spacer that fits behind that reverse linkage or that theres an adjustment on that reverse fork where i could move it out on the rod a hair more. Or something like that. Im just trying to juggle your memory a little and get you thinking,cause i know you deal with a hundred different trannys. And the fact that you take time to answer someone when i know ur busy as hell, is good thing. And i appreciate it. Cause i know what its like trying to trouble shoot something without seeing it. So thank you for your time. If you happen to think if any possible causes that would cause that reverse arm , not to move out as far, please let me know. Also, it confuses me why, i can go from reverse to 2nd, and it will come out of reverse, but it wont come out of reverse, when i go to fifth? I thought that going to fifth from reverse would cause it to giggle out better than going to second, cause fifth and reverse is on the same rod. But thats not the case. Somehow going to 2nd, gets it out of reverse. Im going to take it out next weekend and tear into it ,and so im trying to have ideas to look for. Cause since this is my only ride, i have to get it done and back in before Monday morning. And plus i drive to work over 80 miles one way. Just let me know any ideas that might pop in ur head,so i can have an idea of what to look for when i take it out next weekend. I know ur a busy guy and i sure appreciate you trying to help. Its not that im a cheap person that doesn't want to pay someone to work on it, i just can't afford it, so thanks again!!!!!

Great video. I made my own alloy back plate and fitted a W58 into my Healey 100 many years ago, it has the 0.73 ratio on 5th gear. I would like to do a similar project on my Triumph but can't find a W58 box for a reasonable cost, loads of transmissions from 2wd pick ups, with 0.85 ratios on 5th. If I get a box, say a W56 or W55 from what I've read it should be possible to change the input shaft and the intermediate shaft so the 5th gear ratio will drop to 0.73. As it was a standard Toyota design, I'm thinking it can be done, but at what cost? Sure would like to drop the ratio down a little more. Can you get these parts? or even a different 5th gear set, other than the 57/33 that's available. Thx Johnb

My '86 Toyota pickup (2WD, 5 speed) has recently begun to make noise, when temperatures are at, or below freezing. The noise is only noticeable with the transmission in neutral and the clutch released (no pressure on the clutch pedal). The clutch release (throw-out) bearing and the bearing in the flywheel are only a couple years old. It appears to me, that the input shaft is designed to be removable, without full disassembly of the transmission... Seems the input shaft ball-bearing would be the likely culprit. WOULD IT BE WORTH replacing the input shaft seal and ball-bearing? (rather than either replacing, or fully rebuilding the transmission) Thanks! Enjoyed the video (parts 1 and 2)

By remote shifter do you mean what's commonly referred to as a "tripod" shifter? YES. However, I believe you will possinly need an early model tail housing, and all related shifter parts. I haven't tried to just swap the inner socket out for the earlier model but from my own transmission (late model tripod) and watching this video, it may be possible to use the late model tail housing with an early model shifter as long as you have the right shifter, shifter tower, and the metal block that attaches to the shift selector rod. I hope this helped.
