Time for a thought experiment: Imagine for a moment that global catastrophe struck and you needed to rebuild everything. How would you do it? It’s a topic astrobiologist Lewis Dartnell has been pondering for some time, and in this talk he shares some findings related to three key areas that foster the development of civilization: food, fire and science.
TEDArchive presents previously unpublished talks from TED conferences.
Enjoy this unedited talk by Lewis Dartnell.

One of the things Lewis does not mention as essential for the rebooting of civilization are teachers. I am a Clinical Laboratory Scientist, I find it difficult to give my knowlege to others, even when it is desperately needed. Teachers can take the "black boxes" of things like medicine, electronics, mathmatics, authority, ecconomics, libraries and agriculture, and make them accessible, understandable and indeed desirable and necessary. Being able to read, and wanting to read is essential.

One way to help rebuild civilization is construct a Knowledge Ark. Stock it with not just how-to books, but also great literature, drama and poetry. Gather great music in various genres, and DVDs of classic movies and TV shows.

I’ve always wanted to know how to make the materials like plastic, rubber, etc. we use to craft our modern day devices. It’s sad that not enough engineering jobs really teach them HOW to make the materials they use when building but instead how to put them together

One of the few good things that came from globalism, is the standardization of technology across the world. So even if the planet is plunged into global anarchy and strife, there is very likely will be a few peaceful beacons where our modern knowledge will remain and develop, awaiting its moment to lit up the darkened planet

How To Make a Pencil: Take wood, pyrolyze into charcoal. Take charcoal, fire it in kiln at above 900'C to carburize into crude graphite. Take crude graphite, crush and mix with wetted clay. Form graphite/clay into pencil lead. Allow to dry, and then fire it in kiln again to harden the lead. Take a straight branch, split along grain. Cut recess sized for lead. Put lead into recess, and glue the two halves of the branch together again. Carve or turn the branch body into final dimensions. You now have a pencil (without the eraser).
