Excellent, thanks, nobody mentions that in this kind of audio units those frontal inputs are MONO!!!! and you need 2 for recording stereo!! the info I just needed to know, great.
Hi Pete. I have a similar casio digital piano ( with 2 headphone/outputs) and I recently buy an interface to record the sound from the piano. So, the correct cable that I should buy is the Stereo TRS Jack to 2 mono?. Also, I want to ask you if exist a balanced cable of this type. I read somewhere that it provides a better sound quality. Sorry for the questions if they are completely wrong. I'm beginner in these things. Thank you for your Helpful videos. Greeting from Chile
Hey Richard. Happy to help out my friend. So, balanced cables only support mono, so a dual TRS cable that's balanced can only be used for a device that has separate left and right outputs. Headphone and other stereo outputs use unbalanced as they include left AND right in one. So you'll need a stereo 1/4" TRS to dual mono TS cable. My cable guide has links and videos that will help you here - studiolivetoday.com/cables
Hey there. If you’re only using or wanting mono audio you can use one channel for each. Only need both if you want a stereo signal with left and right.
Hi! What if my synth has a L/R Balanced output? Do I just take two TRS cables coming from those outputs and plug them into the two channels on my interface?
You’ll still need some sort of audio interface to record with. The headphone jacks in phones and tablets are TRRS which only support mono microphone audio. studiolivetoday.com/gear
I have the Focusrite Scarlet Solo, which has an XLR input and a instrument input. Is there a way to also use this method with Scarlet Solo? Not sure if a XLR Male to 1/4" Female Balanced Adapter would work? About to get a decent keyboard for dirt cheap, so I am looking for a solution.
Yeah, with some careful adjusting you could but nexuses the left input is balanced and the right unbalanced the gain levels wouldn’t match. You’d need to get the right cables and then do some adjusting. Something like the Behringer UCA222 might be a better option.

Yes, yes , yeees thank you so much! Finally someone that explains how stereo works ! Everything I saw before was guitar + mic ! Nobody thinks about us keyboard users... (i swear i’ve been searching for about one and a half hour) You don’t have enough views.
Very welcome my friend! Glad that it helped you out. I hope you enjoy the other videos here on the channel and consider subscribing if you haven't already.
Great and easy to understand. Thanks for mentioning that the audio now comes out of the interface headphone jack. Not knowing that could throw a novice off for a bit. 😊
hello! thanks for this video! Although I have two output lines in the bak of the piano , may I use the headphone output to connect the mono lines into the two lines of the interface? Doesnt make any problem that? thanks!
if i don't like the stereo effects recording this way, can garageband convert it down to mono? or is there a way to just record mono using these cables? thx
Sort of. You can just use a single cable and you can use something like AudioShare to record. Or you can record in stereo and then convert to mono. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-eWPNNBJlLlU.html&feature=shares
i have use the kdp70 piano which has a midi in and out port, and i use the um-one midi in and out cable to connect to the pc to record. I dont know do it has any difference with the method using the headphone port that you use on the video. Thanhks
Sounds like you are capturing MIDI at as poised to the actual audio as I show in this video. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-l-g5UEsn6Ws.html
I'm getting lots of feedback/cable buzz just using a single trs to trs cable on my digital piano line out. Although the same setup works perfect on my synthesizer (very clean). Is there something wrong with the signal from my digital piano?
I have a Yamaha P45 and have spent an hour or so looking for a way to record my piano in stereo. What I wasn't sure of (prior to getting the answer in this intuitive video) was since it only has a headphone port for cabled output, would I need a TS or TRS cable to get the stereo sound. Guess what? I now have my answer thanks to this helpful and freely given advice. I've happily subscribed and after this video, I'm headed to your channel to look for more concise and no bs content, which I'm confident I'll find. God bless you sir. 💯
Hey Pete, I have a Yamaha CLP 220 and it sounds great with headphones in stereo. But I bought a 1/4" stereo to 1/4" dual mono cable and it only records in mono...Can you help me pls?
Hello, I'm sorry if my question is stupid, but I'm a beginner: Do I plug it in the Audio In slot or the Phones/Output slot of my keyboard? I just wanna know so I buy the right cable.
Hey there. You’ll need an audio interface with phantom power. This video should help you out. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Sc-_LiuqiRA.html
Hi Love your channel ! But I can not find anything on how to connect 2 keyboards together (not for recording ) to powered speakers with a internal mixer (I do notwant a separate mixer). Is there any way to connect 2 keyboasrds so they sound together without running 2 line out to a seperate mixer mixer ...in other word can I tie 2 keybords sounding together and have only 1 connection for both signals to my powered speakers mixer . I have 2 channels on each powered speakers .
@@PeteJohnsMusic I’m just so confused because there’s so many inputs and outputs on the back of my keyboards I can slowly load it with all kinda audio ends audio while slime in slime outs all kind of ends and nails I thought that’s what that was for I have a Yamaha Tyros and also Yamaha CP 88 and I was trying to tie them in together and use the CP 88 as a controller thank you for your response so I guess I need to get a mixer?
Hi, I needed some help. I have a CASIO CDP s350 keyboard that I want to record onto my laptop using a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 3rd Gen USB audio interface. On the back of my keyboard, I have a 3.5mm headphones/output jack. How do if this output is stereo or mono? Second, the are the line inputs of my audio interface mono or stereo? Lastly, would the audio quality be better if I use a 3.5mm TRS cable to 1/4 in TRS cable instead of a 3.5mm TRS cable to 1/4 TS cable? Please help me, I would really appreciate it.
Hey Bob. I have a cable guide here that will help - studiolivetoday.com/cables The headphone jack would be stereo (3.5mm TRS), so you'll need a 1/8" stereo TRS to 2 x 1/4" TS cable, similar to the one I use in the video.
@@BobJones-dt9kzTRS inputs can be unbalanced stereo or balanced mono. So they are perfectly fine to record with. My interface has TRS inputs but I only use TRS stereo to dual TS mono, like the one used in this video. It would be perfectly fine. Also thank you so much for making this video Pete 🙂
Hello Pete,I have a question? My audio interface is the behringer u phoria um2 and it has one line input and one guitar input, do I just plug the mono tips in the line input and guitar input?
Hey there. The UM2 doesn't support stereo line in unfortunately, but you can simply plug in via the instrument input and connect as a mono source using a standard instrument cable.
So I can just plug a mono tip in the headphone jack of my keyboard then take the other splitter mono tips and plug them to my mic/line input and guitar input of my audio Interface?
Hi, I'm gonna buy the Scarlett 2i2 where you can insert 2 plug mono for recording stereo (from my keyboard) the question is, the best for recording would by by keeping the volume level of my keyboard low, and the input levels of the audio interface a bit high? or vice versa? (high volume on the keyboard and minimum level on the audio interface? Or would technically be the same? And second question: I'd have connected the studio in this order - 1 the keyboard - 2 the audio interface - 3 Edifiers active bafles: should I keep the level volume low in my keyboard, Scarlet (monitor) and then I could increase the volume 100% if required on the Edifier? the question is because I'll have 4 different knobs to handle!!! (keyboard / audio unit inputs / audio unit master volume / active Edifiers) and I wouldn't want my Edifieres explode! :)
Yeah it’s a bit of a trial and error thing really with the levels and gain staging. I tend to get my audio source at the right level, then gently bring up the input gain on the interface. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-gQcBw5Sp1aI.html
What I do if I want to record the audio from another keyboard and also have quantize on it is. If you have a sequencer in your keyboard or a separate sequencer . And your keyboard sequencer or the separate sequencer has quantize I ll just do what I want to record on the keyboard and then I Quantize the beat or Melody. Then I put the temple. From the keyboard or the sequencer the same as GarageBand. Then I’ll press play on the keyboard or on the sequencer at the same time that I start recording on GarageBand after the four beat of. GarageBand When you press record on GarageBand just wait for the fourth beat of the metronome. Sometimes when you put the same tempo from the keyboard to match with GarageBand it will stay on beat until like one minute or two minutes so you have to be careful me personally what I do is I bring up the window of the temple and I’ll put it one number down for one second and then I put it back up 1 number so it can stay on beat during the time that it’s playing and recording but you might have to do it multiple times depending how long is your song so just be careful
How would this scenario change if I was also trying to record myself singing by plugging in an xlr mic? My interface only has two inputs like yours so if I followed the setup that you did in this video I wouldn’t have anywhere to plug in my xlr mic. :( So I guess I would have to record vocals separately?
Hey there. Yes, you would either need to only send a mono instrument signal and use the other input for a mic, or record the first track and then overdub the second.
Hi Pete, i'm looking to upgrade to the Steinberg from the cheaper small unit I have at the moment. Does it have stereo 'line out' so you could potentially monitor back to the digital piano speakers, rather than use the headphone socket?
Great video! Quick question - I've always found it challenging to get adequate volume for any of my keyboards (Yamaha P125, Casiotone CTS-1, Korg EK-50) through my Alesis Multimix 4 mixer/audio interface - the keyboard out, the line ins on the mixer and the mixed output on the mixer are always max and I always get a very weak audio recording that needs to be boosted on my daw. I can get a louder signal if I use the mic/line combo jacks (that have the extra gain available) but it doesn't sound quite as good - is this just a case of a cheaper interface with lower quality/strength amps perhaps?
Het there. Yes sometimes getting enough gain through can be challenging. Hard to diagnose specifically. Maybe provide more detail and ask over at the Create Record Release or GarageBand Users Facebook groups. createrecordreleaae.com.
Hey mate, I have a weird audio question which I can't wrap my head around. It is possible to just use a TRS stereo-to-stereo cable into an audio interface (not splitting into 2x mono)? are there interfaces on the market than can do that and why/why not?
Awesome video man. I was wondering though, my piano has two line out jacks, could I run one cable out of each of those and into two different inputs on my audio interface? If so, would these two cables have to be TS or TRS cables? edit: Will it still work if one of the inputs on my audio interface is line in and the other is inst in?
Hey there. If your interface only has one line in input you will need to just send one TS or TRS cable. If you want stereo your will need a two channel interface with stereo line in. And most line outputs are TRS compatible.
Quick question. I'm planning to do an acoustic version of an original song. Could I record my piano (in stereo) in parts instead of trying to play the entire piano piece and then make a mistake? After I play each piano part for my verses and chorus, could I combine all the piano pieces into one track?
Love your channel! You're the best! Curious, why did you need the hub? Couldn't you just plug the powerbank directly into the audio interface to power it?
Yup, you can as king as you’re using an interface with separate power. I always use a hub so I can connect other gear if I want to. studiolivetoday.com/usb
Hi Pete, thanks vor the Great introductory Video. Is there any way to skip the audio interface? Why can’t I simply connect audio out of the keyboard into the USB port of the iPad? I mean that’s how all regular headphones with a mic for telephony simply plug into the smart device. I really just want to get started and currently don’t like to buy more bulky hardware. Thanks a bunch!!!
Alas, no. Unless you mean sending the MIDI from a keyboard via USB which you can do as I show in this video - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-N1gHwJlap2s.html
This helps alot to get on the road to recording my music to CD tired of using my Phone mic for demos .... I have a Yamaha keyboard & HP laptop with CD burner So To simplify I need output/input plugs a good interface & laptop program
How do you connect audio output from Mac, Pc/ Laptop audio port into the piano build-in speaker? Is that something you can do? Use the piano built-in speaker to play audio from External devices like Pc or Mac? Is something like that possible?
Hi there. Yes, if your keyboard or piano has audio input jacks you can do this. Also if you use MIDI some software lets you send MIDI data to play a keyboard sound as well as from the keyboard to the computer.
Headphone output? You’ll need a stereo TRS to dual mono TS for this. More details here / ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-dyrxZrUeSEg.html
Hi Pete, how do you know wich mono jack correspond to each channel? I mean, how do you know you are connecting left channel to interface input 1? Thanks!
Thank you for your video Pete! Any question... Is there any way to connect the same keyboard (Celviano) to the same audio interface with MIDI connection (usb maybe)?
Yup. Sure will. These will give you an unbalanced TS signal so might get a little noise and interference in there but I’ve used this method successfully many times.
Hey there. It really depends. Hey he quality is generally better using MIDI to trigger virtual instruments, but there are some cool sounds on my Casio piano that I love capturing.
I have 6 meter (20 feet) cable like yours. Is it too long and going to make me lose high frequencies? Or being a Line level signal doesn’t apply in this case? Thanks
Very Informative video, can you please let me know that is it okay to use 1/4" stereo (TRS) to 1/4" stereo(TRS) cable and record keyboard using only single slot of interface, will that help me record stereo output ? instead of using 1/4" stereo to 1/4" dual mono. Please reply, I need to decide on which interface would be helpful for me then.
@@PeteJohnsMusic how to understand that the input to interface is mono or stereo, sorry it might be silly question, i recently started learning about interface. I am planning for Focusrite Scarlett Solo (3rd Gen) USB Audio Interface. If it won't help me record my keyboard stereo output then i would have to go with higher version.
@@Teclista yes, that's exactly info I needed to know, the Scarlet Solo has only 1 mono input (the second one is for a mic, not instrument) so I would say the question is yes, you (and me) would have to stick to 2i2 model for recording stereo (2 mono plugs to 2 mono plugs)
Hi Pete, just had a question regarding where to plug in your headphone jack. My piano is similar to yours where it has two stereo headphone outputs. Wouldn't you still be able to listen to the piano through the piano itself rather than monitoring through the interface? I understand that you would first want to set your gain levels correctly by plugging into the interface, but once that's done, wouldn't you be able to listen from the piano directly so that there is no latency in playing? This is a really great educational resource you're providing by the way, very beginner friendly!
Hey there. Yes, 100%. You could just plug in to the other headphone jacks the issue comes when you want to monitor backing tracks and record over the top as you need to hear your piano and the already recorded tracks. So for solo performance, absolutely you can record and monitor direct.
Hi sorry would like to drop some noob question. So my keyboard only have one phone output in which i use to connect to the audio interface setup. But somehow when i connect it, seemed the sound only recording on the left side (one side of the port) Also tried to use headphone, the sound also only coming from the left side of the headphones. Am i doing something wrongly 🤔
Hey there. Perhaps you’re using one channel of a two channel interface? This is what causes the issues you’re talking about as it basically uses a stereo signal so each input uses one side. The solution is to film the signal across both channels in editing. If you’re using GarageBand or similar, make sure “mono” is selected and not “stereo” for the input.
@@PeteJohnsMusic Hello2, Thanks for the reply. Really appreciate it 🙏🏻 That might be the case, my keyboard is an old model btw. And aside from the audio interface, if i were to connect my headphone to the keyboard (i indeed use a 6.5mm converter) it only came out to one side of the ear only 🤔 Did i might wrongly bought the adapter, im pretty sure its TRS, but in silver colour 😅
Hey Pete, probably a silly question but why can’t we just use one TRS cable from the headphone out of the synth to record in stereo? Isn’t TRS capable of carrying a stereo signal? Or is there a reason why we use two mono cables as you have here?
Yeah. You’re spot on though. If you have an interface or mixer that has a stereo input you could use just a stereo TRS cable from a stereo headphone out.
I am a little confused. I plan to get a MODX and on the back, there is L/MONO and R. I am assuming if I connect the L/MONO to my interface, I get a mono signal, right? But with a TRS cable, I should get a stereo signal (unbalanced), so now I am confused. Do I get two TRS cables or do I just get TS cables for the stereo input?
What a great video! Thank you so much for taking the time to explain this. I've been searching for a tutorial with this exact information but couldn't find anything until now. Now i know what cable i need to buy! Thanks Again :)
Awesome! If you want to do me a favour you can buy through the links in my gear guide. Or keep it handy for future purchases. 😊 Http://studiolivetoday.com/gear
I’m not sure I understand why, if the keyboard has two 1/4” output jacks (left and right) and you want to record stereo, why is the out put only from the left channel going into the interface and not both left and right?
Hey there. My piano only has headphone outputs which are 1/4” unbalanced stereo. If you have dual mono (left and right) then yes, you would want to use a dual balanced TRS cable. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-dyrxZrUeSEg.html
@@PeteJohnsMusic thanks for your reply.UPDATED: I found out my keyboard's 1/4" aux L and R outs are TRS. So they are balanced. My question is, do I get TWO TRS cables for both L and R and run them into an audio interface? Or just one TRS cable, going out from Left side only?
Depends on the keyboard, but yes the Focusrite has TRS input so if your keyboard has TRS output you can. Some keyboard only have a 1/4” headphone out or Stereo TS.
Don't you wish there was a volume level sync button for channel 1 and 2 on our sound cards? I always try to get the input volume knobs leveled exactly equal. I would do this by playing a consistent bass synth on piano keyboard and then level the input volume knobs. Over a day or week sometimes the volume knobs adjust a little bit. Maybe not so noticeable but I like to have them perfectly leveled equal (with a stereo left and right mono cable connection.)
@@PeteJohnsMusic I'm about to test out midi VST with edrums and piano. I suppose I won't have to worry about equal input volumes that way. Glad I'm not the only one wishing this sync volume option.
What if I have a “1/4" L/MONO, R [unbalanced]” keyboard output, does this mean I have to use a Y Cable - 2 TS from the output and the other end a TRS cable as input in the audio interface? Or should I use a 2 separate TS cables for inputs and outputs so that I can produce a stereo sound? I have searched everywhere and I’m really confused still! Hope you can enlighten me 🤗
Or does the “R[Unbalanced]” mean that it’s a stereo output? In that case I can use a TRS cable in the output and connect two TS on the audio interface on 2 channels. Sorry for bombarding you with questions. I’m an acoustic piano player for more than a decade, and I’m just new to the digital piano world, and I have no idea what to do! I learned all these TRS TS RCA cable stuff and audio interfaces, mixers, and whatnot just days ago. Hahaha! Thank you for your patience 😊
Hey there. So this means that it will send a mono signal via TS if using just one cable, or will be stereo is you plug in a dual TS cable. This video will help you out with this - studiolivetoday.com/cables
Nice video ! hmm what is the difference between recording in stereo as you have set up and just recording in mono and then split that into two tracks and pan later in the software? Is it clearer or?
Hey Jonny. A stereo recording preserves the stereo spectrum and split of the piano, with low notes on the left and high on the right, which is hard to reproduce with a mono recording. And also keep making effects like stereo delay and reverb.
If your piano has an audio line out you can do this. If it's headphones only, unfortunately you can't use the piano speaker. You can get a headphone splitter and send one to a separate speaker?
@@PeteJohnsMusic I have L/stereo output and R output in addition of the phones. Is that do you mean by audio line out ??? Thank you so much it's very helpful thank you so much appreciate it
Hello! New to recording and GarageBand. I am recording an electric guitar stereo mix (already going through amp and with stereo effects) into GarageBand. I am not currently looking to use the Amp sims, just straight up recording. I think this is very close to the stereo keyboard you are showing. Is the Clean setting in Audio recording the best option for an uncolored recording of something like this? For reference, I am using a Presonus iTwo
Hey there. Yep, 100%. Just grab a track and set the input to stereo and Jose the clean setting. You can also add two tracks and set them to left and right on channel 1 and 2 if you want control over each individually.
@@PeteJohnsMusic Thanks! I'll probably do stereo for now. Just getting started with this thing. I've set audio to 24 bit, but I believe the sample rate in GarageBand iOS cannot be changed, right? My interface can do up to 96 kHz, but I don't think GarageBand supports it.
Hi Pete, thanks for the video! question: I have R and L/R+L ports in my keyboard. will my sound quality be improved by using both (stereo instead of mono). currently i'm recording in mono with a double ended TRS cord. wondering if i should buy a second cord for stereo recording. thanks!
Hey Dan. Answer here is a big “it depends”. The quality won’t necessarily be better as such, but because some keyboards use stereo samples, to get the stereo effect from these, a stereo connection is needed, so you’ll find it may sound “fuller” when recorded with stereo. It’s worth investing in a second TRS cable to give it a try in my opinion. studiolivetoday.com/cables
I have the same L and R outputs in my piano. Should I connect a mono cable from L to first channel on my interface and do the same for R to second channel?
Does it matter which splitter cable plugs into which channel of the audio interface? I notice they are 2 different colors so is it important to plug a certain one into channel 1 and the other color into channel 2?
@@PeteJohnsMusic I can't get it to record in stereo. I think the problem is my digital piano model, Casio PX 770 has 2 headphone outputs but I think they are mono☹️

5:01 Just a quick question: Is there any way to record using this method without having to plug headphones in? So basically you'd be able to record what you're playing, but you'd be hearing yourself normally through the speakers without any head phones. I play on a Yamaha-P 125 and I'd love to record some pieces that I've been practicing, but I feel like I play better when I don't have headphones on, just wondering if that was a possibility.
Yes, if your keyboard supports audible playback when you’re connected it will work fine. My keyboard mutes when headphones are plugged in but if you have a separate audio out it will work fine.
If you're using the line outs you can enable the speakers at the same time (page 23 of the manual); also FYI the P-125 has an audio interface built into the USB port, so you don't need an external interface you can just connect directly to your tablet/pc
Hey Amy. I talk about this in a his week’s Home Studio Q&A show which you can check out here / ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-LApr2evT5v0.html You can use the UR12 but you would only get mono audio.
Hi I have a behringer 204hd. And a keystation mk3 keyboard Are you sayin the best way to connect to the interface in stereo is with a duel plug?? Or just a single TRS cord will do???
