Perfecting timing! I recently returned my Rodecaster Pro and purchased the Zoom H6 Black and Shure SM7B yesterday. I was so worried about being able to record phone calls. THANK YOU for this video!
Javier Mercedes the recordings were distorted. I purchased a Rode NT2 mike to test the device but I think the Rodecaster had a factory defect or I received a previously used and broken piece of equipment. When I receive the box from Amazon, the product box was torn and the Rodecaster Pro appeared to had been used before. I received a refund but it cost me $70 in shipping!
that is unfortunate, I have one myself I just got to start testing, from what I’ve heard it has had great reviews, but the h6 is a very reliable and versatile piece of gear that I still use almost every day.
Javier Mercedes I purchased a rodecaster pro in order to record phone calls for my podcast. It seems as if I could’ve just use my zoom H6 as you have described. Do you know if there’s a difference in the recording quality from recording phone calls with the rodecaster versus the zoom? The levels on my rcp were quite low for the phone calls. Thanks for such a great review!
After searching for the answer I needed, your video has answered what I was needing. My question myself for this exact setup, “How does the person on the phone hear me talking to them since the H6 is for inputs only and has no way to output back to the phone?” I had a feeling that it was through the phone’s speaker but you are the only video, from the one’s I found, that specifically stated that is how. Thank you for the help.
There are ways of sending the h6 signal back to the phone but they require more complex setup in which you would need more dongles and splitters. this way is simple and can get the job done if all you need is for the other person to hear through the phones mic.
Yes, that was helpful. Thank you. I have been thinking about expanding my social media reach and starting a podcast. I've had an H4N laying around for years not really being used and was trying to figure out how to use it for starting a podcast. This helps. Thanks again and God bless
Such a helpful video! I was sweating all of the videos with 10 cords and adapters I didn't have! This one solved the issue completely and the audio quality is really high. Thank you thank you thank you, Javier!
Thank you Javier , saved my bacon for some i interviews I am doing for a radio documentary as I can't travel due to Covid. Very clear and concise instructions without all the waffle - much appreciated. Cheers Paul
This was super helpful as I’m starting a podcast soon and will have some guests who will be interviewed by phone. I always wondered if I could get good audio. This solved my problem. Thanks 😊
Thanks so much Javier - I'm using the H4n for an oral history project and having to do a lot of interviews over the phone during lockdown, so this will be really useful! ta!
And I'm a social scientist needing to do interviews over the phone instead of in person due to covid... this video is a major lifesaver. Only downside is the audio files export as two separate wav files! Good luck for your project.
I need to use the set up for oral history interviews too but I can't get it to work. I've followed all the instructions but can't hear my mike at the same time as the phone. It's not showing up in the 1/2 levels. Is there a setting I'm missing?
This is a very thoughtful tutorial and you even explained that the audio your caller is hearing is from your phone microphone, anyway to take this a step further so the end user can hear external microphone input? I have tried a couple trs and trrs adapters and they don't seem to work. Almost all videos on youtube just reference using external wired mics with camera apps. Anyone who could answer this question for me would be my hero for day.
Javier Mercedes bro I got the H4 and it works great!! This vid helped a lot. Do I have to incorporate it buy rights to my podcast name or can I submit with out that?
Thank you for posting this! Someone shared this video in a podcasting group and now we are all here finding out how to do this! Do you find it works better or clearer if the other person wears headphones or is just talking into their phone clear enough audio for a podcast recording?
DUde!! This is an amazing set up! This can turn your two devices into a mobile recording studio! Take your phone and have it play whatever audio you are wishing to use, use your XLR input with a condenser mic to record your vocals and sync them up in post! Brilliant my brother! Do you know if this set up still works while using the h4n as an audio interface? Thank you for the knowledge, certainly subscribing after watching this vid!
I was going to make one long video about the zoom h6 regarding all those kinds of setups but I found myself diving too much into each topic that it would have bored anyone looking for a specific setup to stick around for the whole video. I have been recording another for connecting to your computer.
Bro! My buddy who lives out of state and I wanna record our dumbass conversations because they're super funny.... but every app that I've tried is either broken or doesn't work anymore because Google hates prank calls and they clamped down on that stuff super hard because of Longmont Potion Castle. I've finally figured out how we're gonna do our podcast though! Thanks man..... I'm gonna pick up an H6 as soon as I can!
Excellent video and instruction - but I now have a challenge since I've updated my phone to OS 15.1 on my iphone XS. I cannot hear the other person on the other end of my phone call. Any suggestions on what I am doing wrong?
Wow. This is great. I use a 1/4 inch to 3.5 mm aux cable from my zoom to the phone to do telephone interviews. However, this is also great. I will try this next time.
Javier, this has been a game changer for me. Thank you. One issue I am having is that the second I start recording on the H4N and I'm talking to someone on my phone I'm getting a hum. If I move the H4N around to various places on the desk it eventually stops. Its like its too close to something (I don't know what) and I'm getting this hummm feedback. Thanks!
Cool stuff, now I see why the PodTrak P4 has TRRS with mix-minus, definitely will be putting my H6 to more use soon. Might even start a new podcast to put the P4 to better use too.
Great vid, what if you want the same process with phone call recording but not using a external mic, only talk with the phone? I get static in 4 channel. Thanks!
I have got the same set up has you that but I'm using an H6 and a Samsung s20 but it is not working as you have it there I can call and hear it but they can't hear me and I'm also using a cable that goes into the XLR inputs to a TRS I'm a podcaster and I need help with this mate PLEASE HELP
You should have a look at PC manufacturer software that allow you to basically your PC as a bluetooth headset and pass the sound of your call through you sound card so it can be recorded in OBS throught Windows Loopback. I know Dell and Asus provide such a software.
Please do a video on how to record a phone call while your phone is connected to your PC. My phone is connected to my PC using Windows 11 Phone Link however callers on the other end are having trouble hearing me when I use my PC's USB mic or headset.
You have my support. I do tutorials on my channel. On a hiatus until I move to my new place but I will definitely be using info I’ve learned from you in the future. If you ever need audio processing tips or custom royalty free music. Reach out.
So double Mic id used, one is from the recorder, the other is from iPhone. It is okay for 1 to 1, it might be an issue for n to 1, how to position the phone to let the people on the line hear all people
It works with the H5 too. You end up with two files - one for the caller and one for the announcer. They are labeled TR1 (track 1) and TLR (track left/right). It would be nice to not have to merge them in post. Does Zoom allow them to record as one file? The end result sounds nice, but I think the Rode Procaster would simplify it. Too bad they're back-ordered now.
Thanks the tutorial. One question: Can I use 1/8 to 1/4 (3.5mm TRS to 6.35mm TRS) to connect cell phone headphone jack to one of the 4 Zoom H6 TRS Inputs to capture the phone call, and use H6 top X/Y microphone to capture my voice?
nice video! but i have a question, why the trs cable allow the phone to record the audio return and the trrs cable does not? (in my case the voice from the mic plugged into the h6)
I'm using a iPhone 13 Pro Max and I've hooked everything up correctly. I'm also using the correct aux cord but for some reason, I cannot hear my phone call through my headphones. Nor do I see any change from the audio levels when my phone is plugged into the zoom.
OMG! Superhero how-to video. Amazing, I've just bought my ZOOM H6 for podcasting and I though I'd need to get a mixer to get audio from Zoom/Phone Calls and this saved me that extra gear 😍I guess it'd work the same way connecting it to the PC/Mac/Tablet right?
Hi there! I have a new iPhone 15 pro and now it’s not working anymore. Either I can hear but the other person over the phone can’t, or I can’t hear them. It used to work super easily with my old iphone 11! What can I do ??
Thanks for the information. So in case you don't have the capsule (I have a zoom u44, that doesn't come with it) it is not possible do it this way?? Thanks in advance. Greetings.
Only problem I've ran into if you have an old iphone, you cant charge the phone and use the dongle at the same time if your recording lengthy stuff. The y splitter dongles aren't all supported either
A little late to the party, perhaps. But I have an original Zoom H4n Handy Recorder (not the pro). Thanks to this video, I updated the firmware to 1.90, and was (initially) successful in connecting both an external mic from my iPhone and a vocal mic to input 1, and furthermore recorded a phone call. However, when I turned off the Zoom and then later turned it back on, though it showed Version 1.90, no longer was I able to access the MODE option on the Menu. I am super confused. I did a Factory Reset, and attempted to go through your process again. Again, firmware shows that it's been updated, but still, the menu stops at 'SD Card' and there are no further menu options. I'm shattered. And because the device is so old, Zoom no longer has much in the way of any technical support. Do you or anyone in the community have any suggestions, aside from buying a newer Zoom recorder?
I hope you still check for questions and comments. Thanks for the video. I am trying to connect my iphone to my recorder. When playing any audio from the phone, all is well. As soon as I make a phone call, I no longer get the audio from the phone. I have the lightning to 3.5 adapter. I am using a trs cable to connect to the recorder. again, it works until I make a call. Any thoughts?
Thank you for this video. I have an Iphone 12. Not sure what is going on, the recorder (H4N) would pick up music, but it would not pick up phone call audio , which was exactlly what I wanted to do. Anybody can help?
Wow. All other mix-minus set-ups for the h6 that I've watched before this video used splitters on the capsule input and the headphone jack. Nice to know that it can be done with a single cable. What cable did you use to connect the phone to h6? Trs? Trrs?
This is not a mix minus setup, it’s just recording the sound coming out of your phone Into your recorder. The sound the person on the other side is coming from the mic on the phone not the mic in front of me.
@@JavierMercedes Many thanks for a simple up-to-date video that explains something I have been googling for the last 10 days day and night. So when you take the audio from the phone that doesn't disable the phone mic? I dunno why all the fuss about mix minus if the other person can still hear me through the phone's mic which will do the job for a short interview. Last question, I suppose zoom h5 will work fine with this method? Thanks
Javier, I'm still using my H6, I wanted to know how to use my H6 lineout into my iPhone 13+, I wanted to use my iPhone for my Facebook and RU-vid lives, any suggestions are greatly appreciated...
Javier -- you may have already answered this, but is there a special "dongle" I need to get? I ordered one ("Lightning to DC3.5 mm"). When it arrived, I noticed the box said "No Calls" and, sure enough, I can't get it to work the way you did. Can you drop a "dongle" link with the correct specs in the info?
What Cord did you use because I bought TRRS to TRRS to a piece that turns one to the USBC to use my Note 10 plus phone and I can here my phone and calls but the caller can't hear me I'm using a Zoom H6
I’m obviously super late to this, but does the phone simply keep its internal microphone but make it a headphone out so the person on the other end still only hears it from your phones mic?
