Please consider doing more tutorials like this e.g. how to record one-take live vocals and guitar performance vs recording vocals and guitar separately ♥
I've been so confused lately as to which setup and DAW should I use to record acoustic guitar. You solved all my problems in one video 😭 Thank you so so much Dave!
You have explained this in a really straight forward and well prepared way (also really liked your use of graphics and pop downs). In my humble opinion your lesson is vastly superior to most other recording lessons on RU-vid, which commonly use too much jargon. Congratulations!!
Great video. I enjoyed it much. Please make more videos like this...I think playing good is one thing, but understand things like these is really important too...And you can explain everything very good :)
Thank you so much sir this is really helpful! I would love to learn more about recording process like adding backup vocals, guitars, different camera angles..love your videos :)
It sounds to me that method 4, spaced stereo mics, is the best. Can't really hear any difference between method 1 and 3. Used V-Moda M-100 headphones to listen at high volume.
Method 4 definitely is! I think method 3 sounded better than 1, it's a subtle difference but the mic in method 1 is a little bit harsher on the ear :) still a great option though!
Sorry! Just saw the reply. So the solo will do fine if you think you'll never need to record 2 signals at once. I think it's a good idea to have 2 inputs though, incase you want to record vocals and guitar at the same time. Or a signal from you acoustic guitar's pickup + a mic. But end of the day it is dependant on how you'll see yourself using it in the future. If you can't think of any uses you might have for 2 inputs at once, then the solo is fine :)
@@GuitarZero2Hero Thanks champion, you answered my question perfectly. I`ll be getting the two imputs!! & thanks for being so generous with your time & tutorials. That`s the best part with music you never stop learning.....
Thanks your video was very informative. I understand that it is only when we play the guitar. How about when the guitar playing is accompanied by vocals....,
I would push the mic back alittle bit and then bring the mic a bit higher so so that it's closer to you mouth :) experiment until you get a sound you like
Using the set ups you have used that allow vocal recording, can you advise what needs to be done to record the vocal at the same time as recording the guitar? Also could you please also consider doing a lesson on how to use Garage band once recording done or recommend someone else’s on RU-vid lesson doing that?
Hey David, if using one mic, I would vertically align in terms of height the mic so that it's sitting somewhere between your mouth and the soundhole. I would then step it back maybe a foot and a half to 2 feet, and push the gain a little harder on the interface. It will take some experimenting :) The best setup would probably be 2 mics though, one to the vocals and one to the guitar as shown in this video :)
Some stuff you said we shouldn't do is exactly what I've been doing. Damn.. What do you think about recoding with the cond mic and the line at the same time to make it stereo?
Wonder if anybody can help...I've got the scarlett solo audio interface, and an USB microphone. I intend to make a record using my acoustic guitar. Is it possible to record it in one track using the two devices? (the sound from the microphone will go straight to the computer, no going through the audio interface"). Thanks!
place the mic about a foot and a half away from you but positioned vertically inbetween your mouth and the soundhole. Experiment with this though to see what works best cause it's dependant on how hard you play/sing. Cheers
Do the mics in setup 4 need to be 'matched pair'? Can you use 2 different dynamic mics? Also, is it a good idea (or not!) to use a mic as 1 source and the guitar pickup as another?
Hey luke! No they don’t have to be a matched pair at all :) but a lot of producers like working with pairs because you get the same characteristics. And yes you can use a mic and line in and blend them. That’s one setup I didn’t mention here :)
Hey Dave been a subscriber for a while now and really admire what you do. Mate , have you boosted the guitar signals in post at all ? I’m really new to home recording. I use GarageBand on iOS and have tried various methods to record my acoustic to a point that I’m happy with, and never seem to achieve my goals. I have a Rode Nt1 , a Steinberg ur22c as my interface, and have a Cole Clark Fatlady 2 as my instrument and have tried all your above methods other than the first as I don’t have a USB mic. I even just purchased a couple of the Rode pencil mics as well but have yet test them properly. All I’m after is a nice big rich tone that you seem to be getting in each method as you’ve described. My problem is , is that it’s never quite what I’m looking for and even too thin at times. I have a channel as well and perhaps take a look and tell me what you think I’m doing wrong? It’s not terrible, but you know my guitar intimately as I’ve seen you have one also. Like I said I’m really new to all this so any help would be awesome Dave . Thanks and keep up the great work and I would love to see more videos like this one my friend. Cheers, Gerard
Hey Gerard! Definitely a beauty of a guitar you have there haha ;) No I haven't boosted any of the signals post here. I would try playing around with the gain level on the interface itself. You want to push it as high as it will go before your typically loud strum makes it peak. I think what you're doing is amazing so keep it up! Great covers on there. I would say the issue might also be that you're recording vocals at the same so the focus isn't really on one instrument. If you went with a 2 mic setup it might thicken up the guitar sound :) It will just take some experimentation :) Let me know how you go! Dave
Yeah, it doesn't have crisp sound on interface. We use it all the time. My 14 year old son has enrolled in your online course and dramatically improved. He plays like a pro now. However, we are having trouble recording crisp sounds. He discovered this video and is now requesting me to buy a condenser mic 🤣
@@GuitarZero2Hero wow fancy chords. Lol. Sounds amazing!! Thank you sir! I am gonna watch the tutorial you just uploaded! Thank you so much and hope you have a great day/Night!
I just bought a nice compressor mic but it picks up so much bass/low frequencies even with all your suggestions, any clue what’s wrong? Please help :-(
Hey Dave good one man, hey I noticed two different models of the focusright audio interface $315 & $199 respectively whats the major difference between the two other than price? cheers
@@GuitarZero2Hero www.mannys.com.au/focusrite-scarlett-solo-gen-3-2-in-2-out-usb-audio-interface Here is the link for the $199 model only real difference I can see is there is only 1 XLR imput. My point being do you really need 2 XLR imputs if your just soloing for your own benefit.
