Cardboard. A few years ago we were shooting a piece on the Seattle Waterfront. We had the talent walking along reading his lines from cue cards. The camera was on a dolly and I had a . sennheiser 416 on a boom mic, on a pose above the talent. About a half hour into shooting, the wind came up. I had not brought along a dead cat or blimp. I sent one of my guys dumpster diving to find something to block the wind. After finding a large piece of cardboard we moved the mic below the talent and used the cardboard to block the wind. Worked like a charm.
Just to bring a smile to your face Markus … I did a job where I had to interview people on the beach for the UK Tourist Board. On the final video, a request came back, could you add slight wind noises and the fairground in the back? Sometimes, they just don’t want complete isolation from external noise!! 😂
THANK YOU! I thought I was only one who got cheesed off seeing people wearing those Wi-Fi mic modules on the outside. I'm willing to bet those same people have no idea what a "network loop" (or "broadcast loop" in some places) for a lav mic is and how you make it...LOL! Love watching you. Keep having FUN!
Thanks for another great and informative video, Markus, and I loved the opening animation where your camera guy gets blown away--"whoa!"--by the wind! Thanks for making me smile!
Great concise tips as per usual! Actually as a prostate cancer survivor I say get your prostate checked YEARLY! Get a digital AND a PSA! It's nothing compared to a colonoscopy !
*Markus* amazing as always. I'm so impressed at your videos and ability to find those old bits of video from the past. Organization is a fun one to tackle. TY Great one about audio in the wind. :)
Thank you Markus this video as with all your videos help a lot both technically & practically just great. Gaffer tape triangles that hold the microphone secure and cut out unwanted noise, terrific.
Interesting timing as I have been shooting videos over the past few days in quite windy conditions. I use a Rycote Super Softie with my Sennheiser ME66 and I have used it for a number of years now. I have tried some other, including Rycote furry windshields and I noticed when I switched to the Super Softie, it lowers the wind noise well and it gave me a clearer sound and does not muffle any frequencies that some furry windshields can potentially. I mount the mic on a shockmount on my cameras shoe, and there is no issue of any furry bits blowing down and showing up on the top of the shot as the Super Softie doesn't have any fur.
I like to wrap a bit of fake fur or fabric around the end of my smartphone when it gets windy. In the winter, this can be accomplished with some soft wool gloves. just hold one of your fingers near the microphone hole
Thank you Markus, excellent video! Speaking for myself, I wouldn't mind being seen with a lavalier on my shirt with a fluffy windbreaker. I know it looks like something a cat barfed up, but if it works it works! :-D My little RU-vid productions are not as professional as yours, so for my specific use-case I think I will survive clipping a hair-ball onto my shirt. Even so, your triangle tape trick is absolutely awesome. I'll certainly use it like that in winter when I have more than one layer of clothing, my chest is too hairy otherwise (yep, I'm more than half Neanderthal) so the tape might just end up causing very loud "issues"...
Funny great tips, Markus! Love your prostate example! We've been wearing the Tascam DR 10L lavs with the round ball dead cats (actually my wife Terri prefers to call them Tribbles) just at neck-line whilst shooting our beach metal detecting videos. Great to cut the wind down, but visible in some shots. I'll have to move them under the shirts to be more presentable. But for our Detecting Duo videos, I don't think the audience cares too much. Keep them coming! Cheers- Scott
I use my furry cat on my shotgun mic all the time.. does a great job.. plus going with a body mic under the shirt or coat is great too.. followed up with a little post processing and in the end, sounds like they are not even outdoors..
You got the Abominable snow man's coat. Hurricane force winds blowing. Huh? What did you say? That triangle is what we played hand football with during class. What about those Kendall Medi-Trace 100 foam series has a smaller, teardrop shape sticky pads used by hospitals for adhering sensors to your body?
Baseball cap on backwards, sunglasses and a fuzzy thing attatched to their chest lol. You just shamed the entire Top echelon of RU-vid content influencers. Too funny.
"Hey guys welcome to my video. So today I'm going to show you the top five tips to get that crisp cinematic look for your videos, but first a word from our sponsor".
WHY only 451 VIEWS and when you are giving stuff away you have 9 Trillion views? I like this video.. How about on a PANASONIC v770 Camcorder with the built in stereo mics on the top? thanks mister M
So, if you put a mic in your hair...then, uh...wait a minute...But, ya gotta feel bad for those golfers out there behind you and that wind. Wait, a dead kitten golf ball sleeve...
Thanks for the video. I use a Panasonic HC X1500 and can you suggest a shotgun microphone and blimp for recording trains out in 20-30mph winds? Vegas #1
