It's great to see this being covered again in greater detail! Since the subject of sample layering was brought up, I'm really looking forward to getting a nuanced look into how to use samples while maintaining the integrity and uniqueness of drummers' performances - augmenting instead of burying or replacing. I've heard of some really creative tricks such as layering in sounds like soccer balls being kicked to add to the 'pumping' of air in a kick drum or layering in shotguns to add a powerful 'crack' to the transients of snare hits. I find stuff like this so much more interesting because of the critical listening that leads people to using creative techniques like these in the first place. This is already shaping up to be a great series and I'm pumped!

The best part about this video is the fact that you're showing people what the RAW tracks sound like. You can apply all the effects you'd like but if the raw sound is garbage, then your affected sound is going to sound like louder garbage. Doing this for guitars would be great, too.

Glenn. Love the videos! I'm not a musician, not an engineer, but a consumer of good music. The points you make on the lack of originality involving overdone drum samples and time alignment ring true for the consumers as well. I'll give an example....Bonham...Good Times Bad Times. He's not always on time, not always tight, DEFINITELY not time aligned, and I DEFY ANYONE to sit and listen to it without shaking their ass and tapping their feet! Its fantastic! His body of work would be my example of why substance and emotion and enthusiasm trumps "artificially refined perfection" any day of the week! He goes hard, pulls back, lets things build, and takes you on a ride on every song...complete with occasional fuckups. Keep up the good work, and the keep up the preaching to keep things real!

Samples can definitely gloss over the actual drum hits, but at times they can be treated like a fun way to make things more interesting. The experiments we've done with our setup have been really fun, sometimes just using a little sizzle or an extra bit of bass drum or cymbal samples to make a transition more interesting to listen to. I've been using some old concert percussion to sometimes make a "sample" to use for different transitions as well. Triangles too. I feel like it's good to incorporate the thoughts of a triangle player when going for samples, possibly before being the "drum doctor."

This was really great. I've watched a lot of mic placement videos (there's always the "TWO MIC SOLUTION DRUM KIT TRICK CLICK HERE" ones or some variant lol) and this was actually a nice structured easy to follow encapsulation of balanced theory and application. Again, I know it's your actual job, etcetera, but something like this takes a bit of time to put together. It's not the composition, it's the proofreading and fixing that always takes time. :-) Whatever retailers you work with I bet would support you doing a breakdown and demo on the Yamaha EAD10 mic solution/system, if it ends up being something that actually have value in demonstrating. Every demo I've watched on the EAD10 does a fine job of demonstrating the thing itself but none of them seem to do it in a way that helps me understand, as a novice to audio/line level recording/production, what the thing actually is. It seems like it's part actual microphone and part not with a brain box that does stuff but I'm unsure how it maps against every other way to mic/record drums/percussion parts.

I started recording drums myself shortly after doing studio time in 2013 (The first time is always an eye opening experience) and I do not regret dropping all that money on space rental/recording gear to further that skill. I've searched high and low for all the tutorials on youtube - and after your first bit of "How to record heavy drums" I have to say I'm pretty psyched for more. Now I just need to find a new hall to record in, in covid era, in SW Ontario. That's going to suck.

Roc-n-Soc sighting in the "where to start" segment thumbnail - I've had one for going on 15 years and it's *almost* getting time to replace the gas shock in it. ;-) Yeah, you pay up a little but it's been super worth it - it's even survived the *cats* as long as you keep the hair out the wheels (yeah, I use it for *everything* in my office/lab, literally, including drums - there's a square seat option that has been excellent) and the seat cover hasn't even started to break down yet it's a soft cooling fabric. That's like 12 bucks a year spent on throne and office/gaming chair expenses. This thing is *silent* as a whisper, always. If it starts squeaking that means to torque the bolts under the seat back down again. Lever control makes it very quick to put it to the right height for whoever happens to sit on it. It's amazing how much that little shock absorber saves your back no matter what you're doing on it. *I am not affiliated with Roc n Soc outside of having one of their chairs for a really long time*

I've gone trough 5 drummers with my band and the current one is just amazing... While I always had a hunch that most of my band's incoherence was due to the drummer, the current one just confirmed it all... He has the right timing, the right velocities between clean and heavy parts and knows when to go ballistic and when to go minimalistic. I record and mix everything myself and somehow a good drummer basically mixes itself :p

SOOOO looking forward to this. I am recording my own drums... so I hope you address a couple of questions. There must be a balance between new heads on every session, and new heads on some cadence. Like annualy changing heads for for some drummers might be enough? Around not quantizing. But editing drums in general. Isn't the goal to time align... I understand the difference between perfect (beat detective) and closer to the click, and that makes a huge difference... and once you fix one section, everything else sounds wonky. I get I write parts I can't play well (double kick), but I hope that's a "yet, I'm working on it.) And I'm not even going to ask about teaching a drummer to record heavy guitar tones... yet (I have bought that course).

In my time as a musician & engineer I have to say, a great drum recording starts with a well tuned kit. Something that frankly, I've never quite come to grips with. Plenty of how-to videos but they all fall into the same routine of "alternate lugs, finger tighten first" & so on. The mechanics of tuning, not the art of how to achieve any particular result. I have a pearl vision birch kit myself & I've never done the poor thing justice tuning wise. Would love to see an in depth vid on that. Great video as usual Glen!

Granted it's more in-depth & helpful than most other videos of the same kind, no surprise there, but it would still be nice to have a bit more than just "clean your bearing edge, make sure the head is properly seated, tune each lug to the same pitch" etc. Ok, now what about tuning for a different type of sound? What about snare & kick tuning? I noticed that the tom video is part 1 but there is no part 2??

I’m not a drummer, I’m definitely not a recording engineer and know virtually nothing about recording techniques. But I DO remember when my band was in the studio WAY back when, the engineer spent more time mic’ing our drummers kit and getting levels than any other instrument. And like you, he knew what he was doing and it still took him time to do it right. I really dig your videos explaining all the shit you’ve learned throughout your years of recording.

"That's the way she goes, boys." I recorded a 5 song EP a few years ago with my band at the time. It was a 2 week session. The first week+ was all drums, with the first day devoted entirely to setup (tuning, kit arrangement, mic placement, room tuning with these awesome floating wall panels the engineer made, the whole 9). Everything else (guitars, bass, vocals) was done in ~5 days lol.

It kind of sounds like the toms are tuned a little bit above the shell/head combo's natural resonance. You can take the heads and rims off and tap the shell and you'll get the fundamental resonance of that shell. If you get close enough to the shells resonance with the head tuning the shit sounds beefy. Nolly has a tom tuning video/guide that explains how to tune the batter and reso head in combination to get a specific pitch that's pretty interesting. idk maybe something to try. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9acA7vyaDag.html

Love you Glenn! This is gold , love the comments about dummer attitudes! Been playing for 30 years now and i just started to really dive into recording my drums. This episode is , again, a little gem, very useful and straight to the point which i truely appreciate. I use Reaper also as my DAW but not functionnal on my behalf to operate due to being a beginner in this. i saw that you use the aix DSP drum eq. What do you use as a compressor? I am getting Lewitt mics, i have access with my Attack drumheads rep from which i am endorsed. Saw that you use Lauton mics....Do you prefer them to Lewitt? I have the exact same Audix D6 that i really like. My other drum mics are a bit too cheap to use professionally....Alpha Series. Do you like the Rhodes overhead mics? Or Lewitt are better? My studio room is not very large either.....13 x 30 feet....9 feet high ceilings. should i go with ribbon mics as room mics or do you recommend something else? P.S. on a tight budget loll Thx and keep going, very entertaining and educationnal.

In my experience from gigging, the main thing drummers tend to need first are cymbals/breakables, so if you haven’t included this already, maybe a guide on what to look out for when buying cymbals/hi hats would be useful in the future

"Hot for the teacher" Bass Drum sounds less than a minute in?!!! Yes!! BTW, before you get exited Glenn? I meant the VH song. HA! Seriously, those acoustic drum sounds are freaking incredible, and not at all easy to come by from my experience. Top producers have been putting snare & bass drum samples on tracks for decades, but the ability to blend them in to sound realistic is the actual proof in the overall pudding. Great video Glenn!!! Stay gold man!

You should trigger room expansion with the snare and toms with a longer release and then do the same thing again but with a super fast side chain of just the peak attack of the snare and toms after the expansion, will keep them punchy with a slight delay before the room comes in on the hits

Perfect timing! (pun intended), I just watched your previous series of vids to scrape the rust off as a reminder of how to record drums (it's been a long time since I rock'n'rolled...) Mic'd up my kit after doing some room treatment, things sound pretty good as a start but there's room for improvement. Glenn u should try Vance Powell’s “knee mic trick” he puts the mic trough a distortion pedal and a delay pedal for a tapedelay effect as in “when the levee breaks” from led zep. U need to check this one out, i love it !

Killer video Glenn. Have you you ever dealt with 18” kick drums? My kit at home has a kick of that size, and I’ve gotten surprisingly wonderful results when I tune it for a clicky metal sound. I recorded a skeptical drummer a few years back and got a kick sound so bitey that he blew a load when he found out that “he sounded like that.” We tried recording with his unkempt 24” kick a few weeks later and got astronomically worse results. House kit for the win.

Hey uncle Glenn, you probably won’t see this but, could you do an episode where you go more in-depth with your signal flow within the DAW? show what you are routing to each buss and in what order? Is the entire kit being sent to the crush bus? Verb bus? What processing are you doing on the buses and what processing are you doing on the channels themselves before they get sent to buses.

I lot of it has to with the drummers tuning, drum heads used & how he hits the drums. Eg it’s hard to make Simon Phillips sound bad!…..lol love your work! 🤘🤘🤘

Not sure if this means anything... But Ive been exploring ways to use the metronome in a way that the metronome defeats its self so that all you get is click click click click..... not click click click ping... Leaving the user to make up the bpm in their head while keeping track of the grid as not to lose sight of features such as snap to grid and such... That way you can throw in tempo changes... Time signiture changes... What ever you want... Speed it up, slow it down etc. So I try to set the metronome up like that... So that there is no metronome influence but there is still something there to tell you where everything is at... Hope this is useful... Also seen the video on the SM7b... The guy who sold me mine said to buy a cloud filter to boost the power on it in order to get the results Im looking for. So the cloud filter really does help me with mics like the SM58 Sm7b and any cheap dynamic mic really... I really wish someone would have told me that sooner. Hope it helps. Thanks Glen.

Hey Glenn, could you do a video on how to record drums with only a couple pencil condensors and a single direction room mic? I've lost my drum mics and only have these left..

Not related to this video but, when recording in reaper and making stems( single instrument tracks to send to a mastering eng.) How do you print a bus file, Do you mute everything but the instruments in the bus and print it or is there a way I'm not understanding? I should probably bring this question to Adam at hop pole but just saw that you used busses in this video
