We just completed a semester of Jazz Ensemble here at NMHU in Las Vegas New Mexico. The second half of the semester was over Zoom twice weekly. Finals were recording over backing tracks. Many of the kids used their phones as their devices with which they down loaded backing tracks the recorded over and in a few cases mixed. Necessity truly is the mother of invention as their results were amazing. One of the students used the ear buds as a mic. I am fortunate to have Pro Logic on my computer but need much more practice on mixing and adjusting. Thanks for all that you do. Especially like your interview with Grace Kelly. I mentioned her thoughts on Ear Training as a week before Al Sampson joined us in our class and he too emphasized mentally hearing what it is he's playing during solos eases the process. Keep up the great work

I use just my Pc with an Rode Poscaster mic. I record myself and the backing track with OBS studio and cut the video with Sony Vegas platinum. That works very fine for me 👌🏻

this is one of the best vids for anyone looking to record themselves. I love to do guitar solos over backing tracks; the loop trick is a must and takes a lot of anxiety away from thinking about synching the audio and video later. Just keep the video rolling.

My path through this process on Mac was to use Garage Band and iMovie, which were simple enough to get me going. I realized that recording helped me improve my sound a lot. After some time, you naturally begin to feel the barriers for those more amateur programs, and I then went and spent the money on Logic. For video, I now use the free version of Davinci Resolve. If I had to give my 2 cents, I would probably have started out not using iMovie. I personally think it's a pain the use. But, I would have still started out on Garage Band, as I learned a lot of things that I carried into Logic. Biggest lesson however, is that there is no replacement for practice and getting better on the actual horn.

Have to tell you that that little trick for synching Audio with the Vid track is very cool. Thanks!!! I've been matching up peaks and valley by eye and ear for years. Never knew the software could do it in 15 seconds. Duh! Thx again...

Nice. I would also like to see how to actually mix the recording with the backing track. How to use reverseb , filters etc. And how to make the recording blend in.
@kpoudavoff

This is kinda the whole another science. It takes decades to master skills of good mixing. This process Jay showed is the most useful and acceptable for not professional needs. Its easy to do and sounds nice. Also to do professional mix you need your instruments from backing track to be separated on different tracks which is never possible if you can't write your own backings

I don't do much for saxophone. If you get a good quality recording from the beginning you don't need to do much in way of effects. It comes down to practice and personal taste.

Thank you! Not only have I been wanting to learn how to do this for a while, I suddenly needed to learn it since I'm a Jazz major in college and now have to send video juries due to the schools being shut down. Luckily, I already had Logic Pro X and Final Cut Pro on my computer already for other reasons, so this video was extremely helpful. Btw, for other students looking for audio and video editing software (and have a mac), then I'd recommend getting Apple's Bundle for Education. It comes with both Logic Pro X and Final Cut Pro, as well as MainStage 3 (which is like Logic, but used for live performance), Motion (graphics tool for Final Cut) and Compressor (encoding companion for Final Cut) all for $200, which is the same price as Logic is on its own.

Thanks, Jay! Garage Band has been great for my level since it is free. Also - if you are recording a duet, using the Garage Band metronome is a great way to hold the timing because it can be excluded later! (Or, you can record a metronome on a separate track and then delete that track later). Thanks so much for all of your "comparison" videos. You have convinced me that quality sound is really all about the player and much less about the equipment (every single time).

Awesome! I use Logic for recording my audio and have been slowly stepping up my video game. I started editing with iMovie (on my phone and computer) and Videoleap on my iPhone and now I record my video with my iPhone and edit with DaVinci Resolve on my Mac. DaVinci Resolve is free and is really powerful! You can upgrade for a few hundred dollars. But the free version is awesome and more than powerful enough for me!

awesome! I use a focusrite audio interface with Audacity DAW. When I first started I fumbled around a little and finally figured out what is what. I use iMovie from Apple for my video. These programs are fairly basic offerings but "FREE". I have recorded 4 sax instrumentals and posted to RU-vid to my account. I find that Audacity current release with real time effects do most of what I want. I can adjust my sax recording to suit my vision of what I want my sax to sound like. This is not a professional approach with these free programs but it is amazing what I can do with them. I movie does everything I need it to do. Great video Jay. THANKS!!!

For recording if you use iPhone or iPad there is a whole music production environment built into iOS. There are pro-level DAWs and plug-ins. Also LumaFusion is a great video editor. So you could theoretically track the audio and record the video on one device. Although probably easier with two.

Yo, good call David. Lumafusion is used by most professional mobile (phone) journalists. It rivals Premier Pro and Final Cut Pro for features yet costs just $29.99. It also works with Final Cut Pro if you want to edit on your device and your desktop.

Good!! Many thanks Jay! Although that is the most used method, i personally prefer the recordings WITHOUT EDITION, because it is the way to know if the artist has really music/instrument skills, or just digital editing skills, then with this anybody, can remove all errors and improve any audio, even the worst audios, and up load it like a performance in vivo... and finally that is a fraud.
@KadrianThomas
@KadrianThomas 4 года назад
Cristian W. Fath I get your point and is on point to some extent, but at the end of the day, the purpose of software is to edit music so that it is palatable to the ears. That’s why microphones are cued for live playing which is so different from music made in a studio. If music is ever just recorded and uploaded as is, no one would care to listen, it’s not a test of whether you got skills or not. I’ve done work in a real studio and even the best performers have to do several takes of music they know like the back of their hand to produce the best record to put out. No matter how good you are as a sax player some of the quality will be lost once you record it in any software or device, that’s why there are VSTS to build the Audio back up. The same as with cameras, when make up is done for brides they do it heavily because the camera eats away at what it captures.
@bettersax
@bettersax 4 года назад
You cannot edit a bad recording into a good one. You can only help it blend well with the other instruments. That is something we need to do as musicians during live performances for a live audience, but when music is recorded, most of the blending is done by the recording engineer. Recordings would be very unpleasant to listen to without any editing.

Great video as usual!!! I use Kdenlive and Audacity/QTractor/Ardour/MusE depending on the type of recording I need to do. I use Linux as OS and all of the software I use is free and open source. For plugins I use CALF, also open source but I usually don't use effects because I want the audio being as natural as possible. Kdenlive is a great piece of software, it includes the audio clip sincronization feature which saves me a lot of time .In my recent works I realized it's a good idea to use 2 microphones and to do a stereo recording. Microphone position is a key point and deserves a bit of attention. Lighting is also an important. If the video was recorded with low end equipment it could be necessary to adjust white balance / contrast / brightness during the video edition. Do you use to make these adjustments or your videos are exactly like they were recorded by your camera? It's a good idea to render a fragment of the video and watch it in different devices and to adjust the parameters for the average devices.

Just like someone commented, Da Vinci Resolve is a pro video editing sofware (as well as THE color grading industry standard), and it´s FREE. As for a DAW, I recommend the very inexpensive Reaper. Awesome software, with a 60 days trial, and a 60$ price for a personal license. Besides, the Reaper developer is giving away free temporary licenses to people that are social distancing and staying at home. He also shows a BIG "Black lives matter" next to the latest update log. This kind of behaviour should be rewarded. So, all in all, for literally no money you can start recording and making videos at a professional level (as long as you got a decent mic, that is)

Dear Jay, thank you very much for this video. It helps me a lot and I started as well to record over backing tracks. One question is real important for me and I would be so thankful, if you will explain it on another video. I`m using logic pro as well. But I learn it without any help , only with tutorials (maybe like the most of us, I don`t know). The question is: what are the plug ins and how you use it in detail? I love your sound for example with your tenor on " in a sentimental mood", it`s such a beautiful and professional sound. And I love the way you are playing and soloing over it,it is so great. One important thing for this recording is of course which plug in and how to use it correctly. Thank you very much, I suppose a lot of your follower are interested in this question.Greetings from the north of germany from Michael

Many thanks for this Jay. I am a veteran sax player and teacher but know very little about recording techniques. I dabbled with recording myself many, many years ago on analogue cassettes and even spool-to-spool tape recorders but never really found the time to get into anything other than a very rudimentary set-up. With the pandemic lockdown I am now starting to explore this all in much greater detail and have invested in a decent condenser microphone. I am now looking at getting a multi-track recorder but don't understand why they range in price so much as individual pieces of hardware when this facility is already an integral part of most much cheaper music studio software packages for pc's etc. Is there any advantage to buying an actual multitrack recorder rather than using a software package? Thanks again for your excellent and very helpful free advice an all aspects of sax playing.
