Question, If I were to do a commentary video, where I put let's say a video game into the video, then I talk over and give either a deep analyze into the game or talk about what's new in the game, could I just render the video as a regular video without worrying about the audio file stuff.
Thank you so much for the videos. I have been wrestling with Davinci resolve for about a week, watching other tutorials, and not getting too much. Then I stumbled upon your content yesterday. WOW! Divine intervention! What great tutorials. So understandable and easy for me to pull up my Davinci software and follow along with you as I practice setting up the different functions and editing. Thanks again for ALL the assistance!!!!
On a MAC you have to go to System Settings>Privacy & Security>Microphone and then allow Davinci Resolve to access microphone. You have to quit Resolve first, then toggle allow and you'll be good to go.
You’re welcome, thank you for your kind words and for checking out the video! I try to keep my videos simple and straightforward. No need to make it harder than it already is. 😁
Thanks so much! I appreciate your kind words, I put a lot of work into the videos and try and make them the best I can for everybody who wants to watch them. 😁👍
Always great Jason. Your other tutorials on patching mics / input sources have been such a help as I record into Resolve for my career podcast “The Work With Purpose Podcast.”
After experimenting with direct audio recording to Davinci Resolve 18 I discovered that the ideal solution for my needs is to patch my audio studio Focusrite Scarlet I/O card and use Mute mode for monitoring the VO during recording thus I can hear myself with no annoying DR latency. I can’t see the levels in the DR Fairlight audio channel during recording, but I can see them in INPUT MONITORING before switching to MUTE monitoring. Also, I can use my better quality studio mics.
sounds like a great setup. I do notice that Resolve has a bit of a lag in the monitoring. I use an EVO 4 audio interface and can also monitor though there without any lag. Seems like a good way to do it.
Thanks for the explanation! In your opinion could you use DaVinci strictly for professional voice over work? Or would it be better to use something like Audacity, Adobe Audition....etc?
Great, thanks! Just starting out with voice over. I've made videos for another channel that I have and used to use Kinemaster. They've raised their prices quite considerably, so I was looking at other video editing software. Was hoping to be able to use Davinci or something like it for both applications, video editing and professional voice over work.
Great video, as always Jason. I did everything right and still nothing. A green track was created but no wave. I ended up having to crank up the volume in the inspector before a wave appeared and the graph registered. Any ideas on this?
Best thing about this video: the Ron Jon hoodie and the cat.........the tutorial was great, too, but.....that Ron Jon hoodie and the cat......straight gangsta......🤣
I'm not sure if you mentioned this but if not it would be helpful to let people know they can't record audio on the free version. Patch input / output wasn't working unless I'm doing something wrong but I followed the steps.
How would I best use a Zoom H1n? The kline out is 3.5mm jack not USB so goes into mic input on back of mobo, not sure if thats all that great quality wise. Or should I just record direct onto the SD card in the mic and transfer it across via a usb card reader?
Hi! If you are using the H1n, for the best quality, I'd record directly onto the SD card, then transfer it to the computer. I feel like if you used the 3.5mm jack, you're going to loose quality.
@@JasonYadlovski Thanks mate yeah that's what I suspected. Shame the Zoom can't connect via USB to transfer data (power only) because moving microSD cards back and forth is a bit if a pain. But is do-able.
I have a macbook pro and a rode mike that goes on a camera. Mike is connected prior to starting DR. Mick is recognized by the mac. I get to the patch screen and I only see internal mic but that is not working either?
Hi! That’s strange, it should show up. There are no other options for patching? Maybe it’s because it’s a 3.5mm Jack on the laptop. I’ll have to try it with one of my mics and see what happens.
I can get my mic to show and even see the recording, but no sound. The meters remain fixed. I can see the mixer, my input and it is connected. What am I doing wrong?
I have an SM7B with Cloudlifter connected to an interface and it’s not connecting to the software but it will work in Logic Pro X. Do you have any suggestions of what could be the problem? I made sure the track is armed to record, I pressed the correct record button and I found my audio interface when patching the mic but I still don’t have any movement with the meter.
Hi! I’m not too familiar with the Cloudlifter set up, how does it connect to the computer? Do you run it through an audio interface? I would say close Davinci resolve, make sure your microphone is set up properly on your computer as the input device, then open up resolve. Then I will try patching the microphone device or however it’s connected to your audio channel for recording. If you don’t see it, you may need to go into Preferences, System, Video and Audio I/O and set the input the device to be the input you want.
@@JasonYadlovski Thank you sir, I close and reopened the software, re-patched the microphones and now it’s working perfectly. Thanks again for a great tutorial and quick response. God Bless!!!
Ive patched the input mic with the input tracks and i can press the arm for record button but nothing gets recorded like my mic is not getting recorded correctly. on audacity it works
i actually found out what the problem was for me. I have an Corsair Headset and apparently the ICUE Software from Corsair is causing the issue. When i uninstalled the Software it worked for me.
Everything you were doing was helpful until when I got to the "Arm for record" part, I was going to record, but and then I realized that the bars weren't moving , I tried to repatch, but that didn't work, I tried this countless times, but the meters/bars just wouldn't move, will you give me some advice?
You might be ok. Did you try hitting record? It may be the input monitor style you have selected. Go to the Fairlight menu, then to Input Monitor Style and choose auto. Then you should see them meters move when recording and when not recording. The other options may or may not show the meters moving depending on which you pick. Check this video around 9:22 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-wHDXqT8Yf5I.html
Make sure the mic I selected in the computer settings before open ring Reslove. Then when you open resolve, go to preferences, system at the top, then video and audio I/o and make sure the mic is selected as the input. Then try patching it.
Double check that Resolve sees the microphone by going to the Davinci Resolve menu at the top left, down to preferences, choose system at the top go down to video and audio I/o and make sure the input device is your microphone.
Hey @JasonYadlovski any idea's on why when recording directly into resolve with a Schure MV7 it sounds like I"m slowly falling asleep and super dull and slow. LIke no life to my voice? Any ideas?
Do you have enough gain set for your microphone? You can always use the path settings to boost the gain a little bit. I can’t imagine why the microphone would sound any different recording to resolve versus recording into any other program before editing.
@@JasonYadlovski Not sure how the frame rate would effect this. Shooting in 24 FPS, but sample rate may be something to look into lol I just don't know what that is.
Hi! I responded to your message on Instagram but so far we’re not able to record video directly into Resolve. You might be able to do it with some of black magic designs more adVanced tools and hardware, but that’s a little out of my wheelhouse. You can’t connect something like a regular DSLR or camera right into resolve.
Hey thanks for your help on this! My project is having some troubles though. My video in the corner is actually going at like 1 frame every 6 seconds, and I can't record anything since I can't see it. Any tips?
If the playback is a little slow, you can close the meters at the top so you don’t see that video window. Or you can try some of the tips in this video to help speed up playback: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9R47o6kZrDU.html
What kind of timeline are you working on? If you’re working in a 4K timeline change it to a 1080 timeline while you’re recording, that should help playback.
Hello, thanks for the video, for some reason I have not been able to record the voice with the integrated microphone or with an external microphone, I have already configured it from the system preferences in DaVinci resolve as in the iMac configuration and nothing, I have the version Free I don't know if this may be the problem, could you help me to know what the problem is? I have recorded von in the IMOVIE program for Mac and I had no problem, it worked perfectly with the integrated mic as well as with the external one, thank you very much for your help!
Hi! Have you patched the mic to the track you want to record to, then armed the track to record, then hit the record button? Do you get any signal coming from the mic?
@@JasonYadlovski Yes, I did everything and set up the microphone, but it does not receive any signal coming from the microphone, this is very frustrating.
I don’t know why it wouldn’t without playing around with it. Maybe try making sure the microphone is set up in the system settings before you even open in DaVinci Resolve.
You're welcome! I hear yea, Resolve does a lot of things different than other programs. The learning curve is steep, but once you get it and understand how it works, it's not so bad. But if you get stuck, I've got the videos to help you out. Thanks for watching!
If a clip has been used, when you look at it in the media pull, it should have a little red line on the bottom of the clip shown you the section of the clip that was used. Any clips that did not have a red line on that means they were not used and you can remove them from the media pool.
Thank you so much. Your tutorial is amazing. The only issue I have right now is that my voice quality is not good as it sounds when I record in Adobe Audition. How to fix it?
Love your channel Jason, thanks for the work you put into it. Do you have any tips on making a voiceover sound like the video dialog or at least less distracting? I'm usually behind my Diety shotgun with a dead cat. Should I go outside and just talk to the back of the mic?
I would just try to edit the audio using EQ, dynamics and maybe effects if you need them and see if you can match it to the audio from your camera. Chances are it may not be a direct match because I’m assuming you’re filming environment for the voiceover might be a little bit better than when you’re running gun using the shotgun Mic on your camera.
@@JasonYadlovski Yeah, outside vs studio. I know from playing flute in and outsdoors you can't hear what you are playing outside. I'd need to kill the reverb at least. Thanks for the reply!
Is it possible to record in Fairlight with 2 audio interfaces as inputs? I have 3 mics connected to 2 different interfaces and am trying to record audio of all 3 on separate tracks but it seems DaVinci is only allowing me to patch one interface only and is not recognizing the other one connected. Or even easier, does DaVinci allow the use of Aggregate Device through Audio Midi?
I'm not sure if you can record from 2 interfaces, you might need one interface with multiple inputs. I know that works. I'm not sure if you can use an Aggregate Device, I'd give it a try.
@@JasonYadlovski Thanks Jason! I gave Aggregate Device a shot and it took some time looking through forums and videos and it is possible. For Mac, I had to open System Preferences and go to Sound and select my Input as Aggregate Device and Output can be whatever you prefer. But the key thing is that this must all be done *before* launching DaVinci otherwise it will not be registered.
I've done everything and triple checked each step, I can even see sound coming in from my mic, but when I hit record, the line moves across the track, but does not even come up with the red track bar or record any audio. I've searched everywhere. Please help? Lol.
Lol, why in the h BMD made it so overly complicated? In CapCut, it's literally one single click. This is completely insane, needing 10 minutes of prep to record my voice, hahha. Well, at least we have you to explain it well. Thank you. But this is another win for the tiny little CapCut. It's small, unpretentious, but does the job, quick and simple, and doesn't need a $3000 machine to run, either.
Any tips on the video playback function not working when you press record? Everything else seems to be set up correctly, but when I press record the video doesn’t play at all.
I understand the voice over the video but if I wanted to voice over and actually character speaking in a movie would I record and then have to cut out the small pieces of audio in the original track? Or can I overlay my recording to be dominant of the small part in the original?
You can overlay your audio. You can also record multiple layers in a track and just use the take you'd like. All your recording should be on it's own track so you can modify tracks to be heard or not, in any way you'd like.
Hi luv the video but im having trouble getting the bar to respond to my voice. I've tryed everything you recommended in the vid but it it dosent seem to work. I Use a USB headset and I think that is the reason it is not working . Is there any fix.
Hi! Does the recording work to record a track into Resolve? Or you only have a problem hearing yourself? If that’s the case it’s probably the input monitor style options.
WHY... YES I AM!... WELL look NO further...seriously DON'T, no need... unless you have time to waste to wonder and end up coming back 😎 when ever I get a question that pops into my head about DaVinci, here is a video talking about it..... reaching for my aluminum hat lol loving the YT sub reminds btw, very cool
@@JasonYadlovski while I appreciate the compliment... I am just stating the truth, haha, and you have always delivered great informative content, not just 'hey I need to produce a video this week sooooo... ' the no thought put into video is short lived. you are like the food truck we all love and wait for when it's lunch time regardless how many are parked in front of us, lol.
I'm literally doing this as I watch your videos and I have to say, you have the best guidance on getting this working. I have been struggling for days and no one has explained it and shown me quite as good as you. Thank you!
I have previously got this to work. If I want to comment on the cut video track then I have to be recording the whole time and then chop it up later? I don't' have the workflow sorted in my head yet. I may be going about it backwards. So I chopped together a video I really like, then I had some feedback and I wanted to add a voice over to explain some bits a bit better. I previously recorded all of the separately but thats much less spontaneous and time consuming. What would be good is to play back the video as I have produced it and for the background audio to "dodge" where I'm speaking. Am I asking too much?
Hi James! So if you only have certain parts where you want to record, you might want to use the ADR tool to setup those areas. I just released a video today about it, check it out here if you are interested: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-d1XME7Cljn4.html If you want to have the audio 'Duck' where you are speaking, you want to setup Audio Ducking. Resolve can do this automatically for you. Here's a video on how to do it: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-dw88MGM9w0o.html I hope this is helpful! Hey Jason - I'm on Resolve 18, beta build 32 (latest release) and when I go to "Fairlight > Fairlight (menu) > Patch Input/Output" it literally does nothing. The window doesn't open. Tried closing the project and opening another project and creating a blank project but nothing works. Do you know if this is a bug by chance in this beta release? I am using the free version, not Studio as well. Thanks!
Hi! I’m also in the latest release and I’ve used it without any problems. Not sure what might be going on for you. If you gave everything and restart and still not working, maybe try reinstalling Resolve?
@@JasonYadlovski Eh, not sure what's going on - Just did a complete uninstall and reinstall with DaVinci_Resolve_18.0b6_Windows.exe, ran as admin - same behavior after reinstall / reboot. Will have to keep digging... thanks anyway!
Thanks Jason, but my audio interface doesn't appear in the I/O section at all. I'm using a Steinberg UR22C USB C Audio Interface with channels...I dunno why it doesn't show up, all I get is my webcam microphone as an input (which is very low quality!) Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Are you sure of the microphone is patched properly? You could also go into the preferences and make sure that your microphone is selected as the audio input device before you try and patch it.
I did all your tips and managed to do a voice over no problem now when I try it only shows there being my microphone in one input Input 2 is blank and now its not being picked up when I arm the track. I changed nothing litterally one day just passed
HELP! When I right click on my Audio tracks I only get three options (Delete Track, Delete Empty tracks, Add Audio track) and there is no tab for no options. Is it because I have the free version? Im fully updated
@@JasonYadlovski hey! I figured it out lol sorry to be dramatic. I hadn't fully understood the tab system yet but I got it now. Thank you for the video
Hey Jason, great tutorial! Question: How can I jump to the beginning and end of the timeline in Fairlight? Seems the usual shortcut keys don't work here. (on Windows)
You should be able to use the home and end keys to jump to the beginning and end. If not, try the arrow keys with a modifier key like shift or alt or Ctrl.
@@JasonYadlovski Thanks Jason, actually it was working before with the function and arrow keys but I was just paying attention to the white blinking line instead of paying attention to where the red marker was moving to, so I didn't know that it was actually working.
Hi mate. I followed your instruction to the letter but I still can't get a reading from the mic in the bars. Mac preferences are set up to receive from my interface. Davinci settings are set up for the same. When I open garage band the mic works in that. Any ideas???
(Help) Ty for the video desde México. Im able to make work the micro of 2 headsets, but im having problems with an usb micro (hyperx quadcast s). The meter bar isnt moving, it creates an FL_capture file but with no sound. I have tried changing some config options in windows and also tested in 3 different usb ports. The micro works well in Audacity, Obs, Ocenaudio, etc. Someone have any idea? Audio Inputs- Track Input, Patch, the R, restart Davinci, restart my computer. With an option in windows I was able to hear my voice on the speakers while trying to record, but the meter bar just didnt move. Sorry for my english
Sounds like the microphones are not getting patched properly. If they were, you would see the meters moving and it would be recording for you. I will double check that.
@@JasonYadlovski Ty for the reply. Its difficult for me to explain in english, but the summary is that I have uninstall an equalizer name Peace and APO. Now all works wonderful like your video, ty again Im so happy =)
This is so strange, I can see that the mixer is receiving my signal from my microphone, track is set to mono, patch settings are all correct, i arm the track and press the record button. But while its recording the red track that starts and waveform being generated doesnt appear. No waveform, no red audio track being captured. I am stumped. Anyone else having this problem?
Hi! When you stop recording, does the wave form pop in? Do you have the waveforms turned on in the timeline view options? Are the tracks tall enough to show on the the clips? I'm assuming that it's actually recording, correct?
@@JasonYadlovski The wave form does not pop in (are turned on on view options) and the tracks are tall enough. The record bar pops in but no wave form and when i press to stop recording - nothing.
Very strange, maybe double check the project settings and see where the recording is going? Make sure that drive is good to write on. 🤔 if you see the meters moving, can you hear your voice if you adjust the input monitor settings? Really strange that it wouldn’t actually record when you hit the record button and save it. I’m not really sure what to tell you without messing around with it.
I was wondering if anybody knew why my voiceover isn't working? im running davinci resolve 17 on windows I've looked at a ton a different video tutorials and still nothing i uninstalled it and reinstalled i watched fixs for it no progress people with the same problem as me have 8 options in audio inputs for the same mic i think it has something to do with the problem
I guess Davinci 16 was much easier. No requirements of extra pillows and blankets! :) Happy New Year Jason and Let God bless you and your family in the year to come!
First of all - your videos are great!! :) Always clear and to the point. I never feel like I have any questions left after all of your explaining! Second - I did bump into one little problem while trying to record .. and it has nothing to do with anything you mentioned but rather that my voice is recorded way too quietly. I have to bump the volume up all the way (and it doesn't go higher) for it to be heard. Can this be fixed in some way? (Hopefully) Thanks a ton!! :)
Hi Tanya! Thanks so much for checking out my videos! Sure, you can boost your audio levels in Post after recording. Heres a video with several ways to do it: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ENt6dzZ2Bh0.html Hope this helps! If not, drop me another comment and I'll see if I can help.
@@JasonYadlovski Hi there! Thanks for your fast reply!! :) It's not quite what I meant. My recorded audio is still too quiet even after bumping up the volume. Is there a way to change the recorded volume? So that the recording is at a similar volume right away?
I got ya. Yes, you can also change the recording volume a few ways: 1 - Turn up the input levels on the computer in your microphone settings. 2 - Turn up the microphone gain if it has a gain knob 3 - If you are using an audio interface, turn up the gain on that. 4 - In resolve, jump into fairlight, Open the mixer. At the top of the mixer, you should see 'Input'. Click that, then choose Path Settings. In the window that opens, increase the 'Record Level'. One of those ways should work for you. Is the echo in the recording itself or just in your monitoring? You’re gonna hear some echo and the monitor in but when you record and then go back and listen to it, it should be OK. If there still a echo, is it maybe just the environment? I’ve never had issues with echo in the recording in my studio.
@@JasonYadlovski Hi Thanks for the reply i recorded it in stereo and I had this issue. So I deleted the track and added mono track then echo is not there. I think there is some issue with stereo audio track.
grr I'm still having an issue after doing this setup. My mic is patched and I can see the inout bars moving so resolve recognises the mic and I've armed the track but when i press record the header moves across the track but nothing records and the track does not go red as yours does, any idea what could be wrong? the same mic using my audio interface works perfectly fine in Garageband.
I just started using ADR and figured I could read my script right from the monitor...that's a good next tutorial for us if you need ideas :) Great video and information you've shared! Also, i'm curious, are you using sound blankets or moving blankets in your studio? I need to shore up my space for VO's
Another great overview. The issue I've come across this on both MAC and PC is the audio levels look good while recording, but on play back the voiceover volume level is really low. It sounds like I am whispering in the mic and not talking into the mic.
