How To Record Your Mac Screen With Audio (2021) 

Hey there. It's me, Ian from the future in 2023 and your explanation of using Black Hole is STILL the most useful and comprehensive tutorial I've seen. It's actually better than Existential Audio's instructions lol.

This is the most detailed tutorial I've seen for non-tech-savvy people like me😂finally get to screen record with internal audio after suffering for a whole year lol tysm!!!

Wow. I wanted to believe this would be more simple in 202-freakin-1... but... "le sigh"... apparently THIS is how you record screen with system audio on a Mac! Thanks for this tutorial! I ended up using this solution (downloaded the 2 ch version of BlackHole)... and made a dual output configuration for going to BlackHole and AirPods Pro at the same time. Only tricky thing to be aware of is that whenever you put AirPods into your ears.... EVEN IF YOU DISABLED THE AUTOMATIC CONNECTING THING IN BLUETOOTH SETTINGS.... it will still switch the system output to only AirPods Pro. 🤦‍♂️ So whenever you put them into your ears... remember to go up to the System bar at top of screen and say "no no... BAD Mac!"... and change Sound output back to your custom configuration to include both BlackHole and AirPods Pro. As long as you leave the AirPods in your ears... it seems that you are good. 🤦‍♂️ (Here's another facepalm.) Talk about complicated to achieve a simple result.... /rant

I had a need to know this today, two years after you posted it, and sure enough.... you exactly explained what I needed. In fact, you added stuff I did not know, such as the aggregate audio device. Very nice video! One thing i found out is if you follow all the steps and you still can't hear it, make sure to go to system preferences, and then go to Security and Privacy, and then click on Privacy, and go to Microphone, and check if Quicktime Player is able to access to your microphone

This tutorial is a game-changer for me. I've been hunting for it for ages, and stumbling upon it feels like finding a life saver. Tip: If you have big sur or higher. Go to the control center, then click on the sound slider. Once you do that you will see your speaker outputs or whatever. Now select "MacBook Air/Pro speakers. Now you can adjust the volume like before. Once you're ready to record. Again, click on the volume slider and click BH+Speakers or whatever you named it.

You saved me! Been struggling to do this since last 2 days. Nobody has explained it as well as you have...you are real saviour!! 😭😭😭 Guys, just watch his video carefully - 1:07 - 3:15 for the simplest method! Best video out there!! Like literally this guy took just 2 mins to explain this. Imma cryyy... 😭 Note - Once your video is recorded, then you need to switch back the audio output back to original mode...so that you can hear what you just recorded. Bonus Tips - 1. Use a Chrome browser for lesser hiccups, not Safari. 2. Restart you computer if you face a dead-end any time.

You can also do this with a usb audio adapter. Sabrent makes a USB dongle that has a mic Jack and a headphone Jack. Simply loop these jacks with a 1/8” to 1/8” cable, and now select USB Audio Device from the audio control panel. Your system is now receiving its own sound. If you’d like to monitor the sound, simply connect a y split at the headphone Jack of the usb audio adapter, run one split back to the dongle and the other to your headphones or your speakers.

OBS has not worked for me since I went to all optical audio. This is just what I needed and works far better than OBS. I just recorded a one hour video with no problems. Thanks so much for this tutorial.

Great detailed instructions. I was just disappointed that this doesn't work when recording a Zoom session.

Works perfectly. Thanks for the walkthrough, all other solutions I tried didn't work. Biggest benefit was System Preferences -> Sound -> Output. Another tip is to make sure the QuickTime player volume for recording is set to no volume at all (if doing audio recording), otherwise this will create an echo in the playback.

It would crash every time I tried to export from iMovie, I tried many forum suggestions online but none worked, so I finally just decided to try screen recording. Damn. Been looking for this kind of tutorial for months with no hope. All failed, not to mention several free third party apps that I had to installed. But your video here just gave me happiness since this is a very clear explanation and quite easy to follow for non-tech savvy people. Thank you!

A really helpful video for anyone with a Silicon Mac running OS11. Mini Macs do not have sound controls for external speakers (I guess the same would apply to MacBooks) so for anyone who, like me, uses 'SoundSource' to control volume from the desktop 'Add Favorit' application & when recording Redirect that application to Black Hole/BH+Speaker before going into QuickTime & it works perfectly. Something I found useful was in 'SoundSource' to set BH+Speaker to 'Mac mini speakers' just good enough to know what is going on but as the sound quality on these speakers is very poor for anything beyond system bleeps it is easy to remember to switch back to normal external audio output. I also have CleanShot for image capture if there is any way that this could capture audio like QuickTime it would be great to know.
