How to recover password on Cisco 3850 Switch (IOS-XE)

Quick video showing how to do a password recovery on a Cisco 3850 switch. Depending on the version there are slight variances how to do it but this should cover most scenarios. And unlike the previous 3750 switches and older, there is a delay during the power up sequence you have to wait before pressing the mode button or you may find yourself holding it down for a long time without the results you were expecting. :)

This is amazing! Thank you. Side note, if the holding down button doesn't get the desired fix. Hold down mode button, continue holding mode button and unplug/replug power, continue to hold mode button. Got me to where I could implement this.

I tried the same way but every time , after booting the package.conf switch is not bypassing the password, It start the same way as in normal mode

instead of going to prompt mode again to change the boot from startup-config , you can type the below command in switch global mode. Switch(config)#no system ignore startupconfig switch all

Just took a working switch and upgraded from Version 03.02.03.SE to latest 16.12.8 and during boot it said Type 4 passwords have been deprecated and after booting in the new version none of the old configured userids will work. Tried the reboot and press mode when powering up, just after powering up and it didn't work. With this new os there isn't any like that contains Base ethernet or even a memory test line so I am stuck!

How do you recover from a 3 stack switch? enable password by channged by others and after some troubleshooting, it wont load the startup config.. Each time make a change it wont load. Any ideas???? Thanks.. Great video

Does this instruction factory reset the switch or is only a password recovery? I am wondering because at the end you mentioned that "performs a factory reset" 5:20

Sorry I misspoke there. By copying the existing startup-config to the running-config, then changing the password only and saving running-config back to start-up config is the password reset only procedure. If you forget to copy the startup-config to running config before you make your changes, then you're in a factory reset situation. :)

No prob! Also just as an FYI, I've been working on a free lab with public access for both Routing/Switching and Voice. For the voice lab, I have most apps for CUCM 11.5 such as Unity Connection, Presence/IM, and Media Sense with a SIP trunk to a Cisco 2811 with AIM-CUE module (older but all I have access to :) ). The 2811 also has a SIP trunk and PRI connections to simulated PSTN for call termination. That way if you want to test dial plans or see configs to use with your own lab, you can copy the configs or experiment in the lab environment I setup. I should have it ready within the next week or so and will post more information about it soon if you're interested. That way you can see first hand some of the differences from a CME only setup vs. CUCM using the "CME" router in SRST mode. Unfortunately I don't have a 29xx router for the latest "CUBE" config examples but they're very similar to the previous gen1 routers so I'll annotate the differences when I get to those configs.

i just did this procedure. once you initiate this: boot flash:packages.conf,, it takes 40 mins to load the image. then you get in, change what you need to, do cfg=0 and do boot flash:packages.conf, it takes another 40 mins. I might as well just nuke the config and restore it. good video though.

Title should be how to Factory reset a 3850I don't want a factory reset, I just want to reset the password...

Hey Tim, did you watch it all the way through or skip through? The first part changes the boot parameters to ignore the config so you can get in privileged mode, then you restore the original config while in privileged mode and then make your user/pass changes as needed and save, then finally reboot and change the boot parameters back to read the config again and you're good to go. I haven't tested with newer IOS-XE versions recently but to the best of my knowledge, that's how Cisco rolls nowadays for password resets. :)
