Loudspeakers create vibrations when they move the air. This is how we hear music, but there's a darker side to these vibrations. Find out from Paul what can be done about it and we learn how he got tricked at a CES. If there's a question you'd like Paul to answer for you, please go to: www.psaudio.com...

The idea of Cartridge mounted directly to the Tonearm with hassle free was realised in Technic Turntable models SL10, SL12 & SL series nearly 40 years ago - a brilliance innovation.

What a good point would be is to mention when you start hearing it. In other words, how expensive does your set need to be before you need to start worrying about this stuff. Apart from the obvious MC of course

With regards to a MC head amp being built into the headshell Ortofon did this about 60 years ago in their SPU series of integrated headshell/cartridge designs incorporating very small step-up transformers.

I kept hearing a vibration distortion on my tubes amp. I’d feel a buzz on my amp of my desktop system. I’d use tube socket saver which gave a positive sound results. Probably the weight has lent a thicker sound and more accurate imagery. But, I still felt vibrations on the amp. I purchased a magnetic levitation (maglev) iso feet. This reduced the vibrations to a barely felt minimal buzz. Tonight, I placed felt pads below my maglev isolation feet. Now, I can barely feel a thing. No mid nor bass buzz in sound. As far as radiant vibrations I get from my speakers, I shielded the speaker and amp with an extra diffusion panel I had lying around. This may be my final tweak.

2 aspects come to mind. Increase the mass of the component and connect to vibration damping materials via large surface areas. An ideal vibration damper would absorb at all different frequencies, so maybe combine different materials with different absorption characteristics?

i use soft rubber, eva foam and felt in combination. its a pretty inexpensive methode too

i use squash balls cut in half under the feet of my gear, and keep all the equipment on separate rack shelves. they are good for cutting down on internal resonances caused by the gear itself cd players etc and keep the gear decoupled from the speaker vibrations passing through the rack.

I built my own equipment rack out of wood and recently realised it would be better if I attached it to the wall as it's pretty high and wobbly. I think it helped, although it does bring in some vibrations from the wall. But surely the equipment rack gets more vibration than the wall, as it's a much lower mass, so better overall I think.

Not much usable advice here for reducing vibrations.

Paul, please try spring style isolation feet underneath small speakers. Made by Nobsound, they allow my speakers to vibrate but my stands won’t. Please give it a shot as a we only learn by tweaking.

I suggest removing springs for lighter speakers.

Paul, I enjoyed the video, it must be because I just like hearing you talk and that’s good. But this is one video I learned nothing cause you said nothing. I was hoping to hear your thought s on isolation technics. Thanks and I really did enjoy it.

He said nothing because he’s not really a believer in it as he hasn’t done anything to combat it. Makes me think PS Audio is not really hi end.

Paul seems like a good honest joe. I've caught a number of his Q&A videos here and he provides good solid answers quite a few times. But I have to say, he's a bit out to lunch regarding his take on mechanical vibrations, their distotions induced, their sources, and especially superior forms of vibration management. But then again, it seems everybody else is too.

Hello, what about magnetic isolation?

I wouldn't build a RIAA amp into the tone arm, as it will increase the weight of the tonearm and therefore limit it's movements. What I have done is build my RIAA amplifier just under the tonearm. Still closeer than normal.

I've often thought of placing a rubber foam sheet around my turntable :). Sometimes I through a blanket over the dust cover. Actually, while probably not the best for a system, but I have everything in a steel rack system. I should at least place o-rings between the rack and the equipment on the screws.

i bought some rubber mats and cut them up and placed under all the feet of my components

I have no idea what Paul rambled on about here, and then the video was over

It won’t vibrate if you don’t press play.

Yes a poor system sounds as good as the best in the world when not switched on. That's the answer!

Try sorbothane pads under your turntable. Expensive but incredible material. Next to nothing in terms of vibration and resonance will get thru to your turntable even speaker vibration at 25 hz is stopped in its tracks. Have seen it used on platters as an under pad but don't agree with that.

You can use a laser pickup, if i understand the question you are asking. Floating the turntable on repulsion magnetic isolation and then the turntable in a tripple isolated (mass-loaded, diffusion and room-tunable hemholts for the different bands), will do the rest.😂

Bubble wrap under everything... That's how they do it in Alabama 🤣

Yes, I am currently experimenting with materials under my MF Tri Vista 21 DAC which has valves in. Soft rubber works well as does bubble wrap.

No need to give a expansion on your communication skills with people we only need to know how to reduce vibration noise that’s what the video is about? and your rambling on about people and stuff that isn’t relevant to what information people are trying to obtain trying sticking to the focus of the video and what it’s about!
