How to refill Brita Maxtra cartridge under 5 minutes

The Brita cartridges are expensive. From 3 to 6 euro per each. There is possible to cut this price 5 times less, so one cartridge will cost you 0.50-1 euro. The point is with refilling, of course. Main active filtering material is activated charcoal, which is easy and cheap for buy. Ebay, amazon, local adverts pages... Name it. Here I show you my solution of refilling. Probably is not perfect, but is quite enough for such purpose and it's working. If you have better suggestion, just let me know, I'm open to any advise or reasonable discussion.

You can now buy something called "phox" They make a Brita compatible filter but they're refillable. That's far cheaper than using genuine Brita ones and tbh better for the environment

As the water just filters through the granules and comes out the bottom does it really matter if the lid is sealed back on or not?

I use phosphoric acid to clean it. Afterwards I use sodium bicarbonate to eliminate the acid. I refill it with water and discard the water.

why not drill hole in bottom, empty old material and after refilling insert a rubber bung?
@rockyramsy

Thanks for the video John. In addition to motormusic advice I would also add sephadex ion exchange beads. They are hard to find but once you mix them with activated charcoal then you get a perfect filter.

because rubber often contain additives for softening and keep rubber in good condition and it would release into water, once such rubber cap would be in constant contact with water or even immersed.

I a bit concerned about the filling activated charcoal. Are you sure that it is food grade? There might be some additional chemical in aquarium activated carob
@magy357
@magy357 4 года назад
Can you specify what chemicals should this activated charcoal contain and for what reason? Any source of analysis, measure of such additives? I did research a lot before I decide to use "ordinary cheap activated charcoal" instead something like "expensive food grade" and found no differences. Except that those expensive are made under strict control process and environment, which cause high price, but final product is practically the same. Besides, activated charcoal purpose is capture any toxins, heavy or harmful metal or chemicals. So in case "aquarium grade charcoal" would contain any additional chemicals, due natural purpose of charcoal they would not released at all, right? Especially not these which would harm human health. Otherwise such charcoal itself (no matter of grade, purpose or packing) would not serve its purpose at all.

Hi, I'm a bit off the topic, but I can't find the information I need anywhere. That is, I would like to know if this Maxtra Brita filters, which I use do microfiltering? I need to use the water for nasal/sinus irrigation, but it's written that only "micro-filtered (through 0.2 micron)" water is suited. Does Brita maxtra suits this description? I would be extremely grateful for the answer.
@magy357
@magy357 7 лет назад
Hello. Nope, these or any other similar "jug" Brita cartridges doesn't deliver microfiltering. Those are based only on active charcoal and ion exchange resin filtering. There is no any barrier for stop impurities with particular diameter. You need check filter system "under sink" and still need to be careful, as usually they have only 0.5 micron filter. However, in most cases should be easy to swap that 0.5 for 0.2 microns cartridge (even more expensive).

To achieve optimally clean drinking water you should use a professionally designed and assembled water filter - not this DIY joke! Firstly, activated carbon can easily 'channel' as water flows through it - therefore the carbon needs to be of a particular quality and density. Additional media is also needed to ensure removal of chlorination by-products (THM's), drug residues, heavy metals, pesticides, herbicides and other toxins. Don't use Brita filters! Most consumers have no clue how acidic Brita water is. We measured Brita water in our Lab and it registered a Ph of around 4.00 which is only slightly more alkaline than stomach acid. Plus Brita cartridges contaminate the 'filtered' water with synthetic chemicals... not good! Concerned about your health? Time to Get Real!

There is no such "glass bottles with natural unpolluted water" in Ireland stores. Maybe in your country. Generally, most of all packed waters are in plastics. And as we know, recycling of PET bottles is minuscule compare to potential of recycling ability of this type of bottles. Unnecessary plastics production harming this planet a lot. Besides, tap water in most developed countries is safe and drinkable, with using filters such Brita or any another (big undersink water treatment system) is perfectly enough for most of purposes.
