Thanks. I live in Africa where they don’t sell the Pentel pens. I brought mine in from the West and this method will save me money and the headache of having to order in the cartridges
The video is helpful and terrific, but I have to say that I just love the birds in the background. Adds to the atmosphere and mood of your videos. Thank you, Teoh and hope you're having a wonderful holiday season.
The needle 2 minutes in is a Copic refill needle. All you need is an empty Copic refill bottle. It screws right onto the needle. I tried it with the rotring ink and it works a treat.
super helpful tips. Found this video before getting my pentel pocket brush. After running out of ink I bought a rotring refill pack and a needle kit. Super affordable and nice ink. Thank you Mr. Teoh
Tip: if you don't have a syringe, you can stick a toothpick through the opening of the cartridge and then drip the ink along the toothpick. Does the trick! This works if your ink bottle has a dropper on it (like ph martin's) or a nozzle (like the rotring inks)
Following your video and substituting with what I have here, Instead of Rotring Inks, I used Staedtler Inks for Technical Pens as refill for my Pilot New Brush Pens (PILOT SN-50FDF-B) and Pentel Pocket Brush Pen. It works fine. Thanks for this video!
I have been messing with the pentel brush pen for a while and have always refilled them, but I noticed that I go through the different colours at different rates. For my black brush pen I just eye dropper it and it lasts a little longer. The barrel is water proof... so I stick some silicone grease on the threads and put an o-ring in there... Not had any issues so far.
This was very helpful. I purchased a syringe to refill the bigger pentel brush pen. It's nice to know that I can also use it to refill this pocket brush pen. Thank you.
Thank you so much, Teoh! This video was very helpful, especially with the supplies! Got my first Pentel Pocket Brush Pen not too long ago, so it won't be long until I inevitably have to refill it. Thanks again! :D
Hi Teoh! Recently stumbled upon your channel and I have to say I'm in love with it. Your videos are so informative and your watercolor sketches are magnificent! Would love to see more watercolor tutorials, specifically mountains and water? Thanks so much! (:
I used winsor and newton calligraphy ink. It works so far (it's at the end of my first refill), but I do notice that it is slightly lighter black than the original ink that came with the pentel pocket brush pen. I'll keep experimenting to make sure that it doesn't clog.
I have 5 pocket pens filled with different w&N calligraphy inks in different colors. I've had no issues but I do dilute the ink with some water to give it a more water color feel.
Thank you so much for this video! It saved a comic project of mine. In Finland where I live the refills are something like 10 USD for 4 refills, which is crazy expensive - so again, thank you!
You help me so much! I was just blessed to find this pen on clearance price and am delighted to know what will successful refill the cartridges.. Thanks!
Thank you for your video. Since you have a bit of a cartridge refill theme going lately: would you be able to show that you can -or why you can't- refill a Rotring Rapidograph cartridge? I know the Isograph is easy to refill, those cartridges are made for refilling.. Rapidograph pens are often cheaper to buy than the Isograph, and I am considering buying a set to go with the 4 Rapidograph nibs I got from a friend. So far I can't find any good info on the internet on this topic. Much appreciated!
I’m looking for a really black ink that is safe for my pens like the ones in the pentel cartridges. I’ve tried Higgins and it works great. Still looking for that black star tho. Pentel cartidges cost around 20usd for a pack of two here in my country and its killing me lol.
I heard that Dr. Ph Black HiCarb can dry and clog up your brush pen. Is that true? I'm using a Kuretake 40 and also looking for a very black waterproof ink to use. Is Rotring that one you would recommend?
Rotring is should be safer. Any ink that leaves dry ink crusts at the cap is unsafe for use in fountain pens or brush pens. And always clean out your brush pen if you don't plan on use them soon because the ink will dry hard, even if it's not solid hard it will still be difficult to clean off afterwards.
Great video! I saw the top of the cartridge is open and can be attached to the brush ? Is The cartridge special or just normal disposable cartridge? Thx
Hello. 1st, thank you for all your videos tuturial :) i'm full of doubts.... i've refill my PPBP with parker quink, and it seems that the ink don't flow... i'm so sad. I've see a video where it is used speedball super black india, it's not expensive but I'm afraid to use... in this video, you are using what we call "chinese 's ink" (sumi ink i think), if it drys the PPBP won't work animore, no?
This should not be the case. It realy depends on the ink, don't use chinese ink for example as it will clog up the brush. Indian ink should be fine. When buying ink go to a good store and ask a person there who knows what he/she is talking about 'not just trying to help' and ask if the ink clogs. The old lady where I bought my ink bottles realy knew what she was talking about and explained each ink. She did not know about the refill technique do and recommended another pen for use with the bottles. But long story short I am now gonna use the inks she recommended in the brush pen, should be great.
Hi, thanks for this video !! I bought one in a flea-market, but when i put a new cartridge in it nothing happen, it doesn't work. I put the pen in hot water but nothing change, the ink doesn't come. An idea ? thanks :)
I mean using the same filling system as for eyedropper pens, aka, putting ink directly into the barrel, with a small dab of silicon grease on the threads
Hey Teoh! Can you use rotring ink for Gpens or dip pens in general? I know you cant use them in fountain pens but I assume dip pens should be fine right?
Hi, Teoh Yi Chie. Thank you for the video! I refilled my Pocket Brush Pen like you did but my ink flow went from very good to non existant. I only flows for like 5 sec when I remove the cartridge and put it back (it makes some ink fall into the hole where you put the cartridge). I don`t know what to do. And I don`t even have other cartridges to see if using a normal one would fix the problem.
Do you have any recommendations for grey inks to refill the brush pen with? I'm thinking of buying a second pentel pocket just for grey and Iroshizuku inks, as nice as they are, are just a bit too pricey.
Hi!... i used a parker ink in my pen, for a while... when i put the original refill the tones started to come out gray... how can i clean the pen, in order to eliminate old ink?
Teoh! Thank you for this video! I have a question: if I want a less opaque colour for shading, is it okay to fill the cartridge with 2 parts ink diluted with 1 part distilled water?
hey Teoh, big fan here. I need to refill my Pentel Pocket Brush Pen, but I can't find Rotring ink in my country. Do you think Staedtler drawing ink (Mars Matic) would work as well? Thanks!
Thank you for the video. Is this Rotring ink the same one used for technical pens? And can I use fountain pen waterproof inks such as platinum carbon and deAtrimentis docment ink in the brush pen?
thanks for this video c: has the brush dried out at all since doing this method? I've got my needles and all just ordered the ink as well, just a bit concerned about how it'll effect the brush long term.
Hi! Very useful video! I'm trying to recover my Pentel Color Brush Pen, I had no idea it was so delicate and I refilled the cartridge with Pilot ink... Am I dead already? I put it in warm water and vinegar, as I red in a forum around, they said it was the best option to clean it inside, but I'm starting to feel a bit hopeless...
May i ask if using the rotring isograph would ruin the brush since it's waterproof so usually they dry hard. I refrain from using sumi ink, and indian ink from my pen brushes, im curious about using rotring because i do love them to use on rotring pens
May I ask something I can't find rotring ink can everywhere in Russia but I found Rapidograph ink Rotring (cartridges for rapidograph) May I use them for my Pentel Pocket Brush or not?
I have this pentel which I was using for quite some time and went out of ink. So, I filled the cartridge with sumi ink and it wasn't working properly... So, I bought the actual cartrdge from pentel but the ink was not coming properly so I decided to clean the bottom part of the pen in hot water in order to clear the blockage, after that the problem seems solved but when I put back the ink cartridge in it, the strokes were coming in grayish color instead of black,. I tried shaking it many time but still it's coming grey. any idea how to fix it?
+Khyan Adair It will take some time for the ink to flow down. Just put the pen in a vertical position for a few minutes and you should see ink from the brush.
I cant understand, in the refilled pen Rotring ink black color looks like original Pentel black color ? Or not? and how about waterproof? I use Pentel and its ideal color real black. How about Rotring?
Hello Teoh. Are you familiar with the water-resistant Pebeo India Ink (Encre de chine)? Is this ink suitable for refilling the Pentel Pocket Brush Pen? The ink should be carbon-based. I tried to google this information but the Pebeo ink seems to be quite unfamiliar to the art community. :(
I'm not sure about that. Generally speaking, inks that dry and create those dust bits are not suitable. As for carbon based inks.... I'm not too familiar.
I've tried this with the rotring ink, but I feel like I'm having ink flow problems? The nib dries out very fast when used on watercolor paper, honestly a lot faster than expected. Does anyone know what's causing this and if there's any way to fix it?
Heya, I hope you'll still reply to this lmao. Have you ever tried refilling the Pentel Pocket Brush Pen with Noodler's Ink? Is there anything I should worry about? I already have two bottles and I'd rather not buy any more inks. Plus Lexington Grey and Walnut are so pretty.
Hehe, that's the same method that I used on my old printer when it wouldn't print black text because it said it's missing magenta. So I just used syringe to fill magenta cartridge with water... It printed my black text just fine, but I guess they want you to spend money on cartridges that you do not even need.
*THIS TUTORIAL DOESNT WORK FOR FINE ARTIST, I DRAWING SINCE 20 YEARS A GO, AND WHEN YOU REFILL IT WITH ROTRING INK AT THE NEXT DAYS THE BRISTLES DRY AND CONVERT THE BRUSH IN A DRYED BROOM, AND YOU CANT ANYMORE MAKE FINE DETAILS JUST A BRUTAL THIC DIRTY LINES. I SPEND 20€ FOR ROTRING INK LIKE THE VIDEO, SPEND A ENTIRE NIGHT CLEANING THE PENTEL POCKET PROPERLY FOR RESTORE THE BRISTLES, THEY GAVE ME ALOT OF PROBLEMS, GOING TO SLEEP 7AM + LET IT MORE HOURS IN WASH SOAP. I CLEANED THE PENTEL POCKET AND I USED THE ORIGINAL INK FROM PENTEL POCKET. I FEEL SO SAD. WASTED 20€, ALMOST BREAK THE PENTEL POCKET 15€ + 20€ + 1 NIGHT CLEANING. This tutorial maybe works for random guys dont have talent and just want to play one day with it for fun, but if you wanna use it seriously, the rotring INK DRY the BRISTLES and convert it int a UGLY BROOM with Dryed INK Lines Dirty and Rigid Bristles not Fluid. Sorry my English, but im really sad, and i try to advise other people to NOT USE ROTRING INK, BRUSH SPENS NEED TO FILLED WITH NON WATER PROOF INKS, SO THEY DONT GLUE DRY THE BRISTLES AND BREAK THE FINE USAGE FOR HIGH DETAIL. AND YOU CANT EVEN USE IT PROPERLY EVER MORE AGAIN, ONLY RESTORING IT IF YOU CLEAN IT ENTIRE NIGHT WITH WASH SOAP AND ALCOHOL FOR RESTORE THE NATURAL FLUID MOVEMENT OF BRISTLES , THEN USE THE ORIGINAL INK AGAIN, AND THEN THE BRISTLES WILL WORK AGAIN FINE FOR GOOD DETAILS WITHOUT LOOK LIKE A BROOM, I GOT SCARED WHEN I WAKE UP NEXT DAY AND SEE THE BRISTLES DRY OUT AND LOOKING LIKE A BROOM DURING DRAWING GLUED WEIRD, ROTRING INK IS WATER PROOF, BRUSH PENS NEED NON WATER PROOF INK FOR BE MORE FLUID AND NO DRYE OUT LIKE GLUE TO THE BRISTLES. (OOF...., YES IM TILTED, sleeped 4 hours because recommend this ink for pentel pocket and made me all night restore it cleaning it properly etc etc)* *AND HERE ANOTHER GUY FROM INTERNET TIP Heres a tip: any bottle of ink that has crusty flaky dried ink around the opening means that its unfit for a brush pen. Try getting a new bottle if you find yours is crusty. Sometimes the stock in the shops are old or the ink tends to dry if the cap isn’t put on properly. Try soaking you pen in water and then blowing water out the pen (its gross, I know but it works) sometimes you see the chunks of old ink flow out with the water.*
