You asked lol - I didn't like the finish on the handles; too bright. I also didn't like the dark stain. I loved that you did it black. I can't wait to get my hands on one of those buffets. Other than my own personal dislikes, you did a great job!
Youre right handle finishes are not very pretty wrong metal color.…personally would try to replicate the finishes closer to the era in which it was originally made. If not that then with a color not a stain.
I really liked your makeover. The only things I would have done differently is use a lighter wood stain and paint the strip between the drawers. I love to see you keeping some of the natural wood instead of painting the whole piece!
I don't know if you heard me, but I'm glad you actually "saved your knees!" lol I thought this was ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL, UNTIL THE DRAWERS! Nooo that looked mixed-matched! If the drawers were black as well, it would be perfect in my eyes, but hey everybody's taste isn't the same.
haha I had old knee pads but purchased some new ones! and for the style, I found ideas on Pinterest/Etsy that had sold for thousands and did similar work.
@@maple9326 funny I started it but then said nope and put tape on it. I think you can kinda see the video jump from no tape to tape when I was priming.
I love it. I’m getting ready to do a black and natural wood antique sideboard myself. I think it’s called Tuxedo. Looks great! I agree, the strip in the middle in black would have tied it all together. But it looks phenomenal! Thanks for the inspirational video.
Maybe not the silver hardware, it clashes w the brown and maybe some detailing on the designs on the doors , like gold leafing and then hardware that ties in w that.
You used a very dark stain, which is quite beautiful on the oak, but dark paint as well makes it lacking interest. I think gold hardware and some gold wax on the wooden door details might have worked better for visual impact.
I would have used a much lighter stain for more contrast, painted the drawers and trim between them black and used a warm gold toned hardware. I am trying so hard to find a piece like this to paint. Or as some people say “ruin”. 😂 Great job!
thanks for your input! I used gel stain I had kicking around and I only have silver gilding wax, I need to get gold!! and LOL sadly people do say that haha
I have a similar buffet that I have been wanting to paint but due to being exposed to moisture it has probably swelled and needs to be completely reglued. Do you have any suggestions or videos on how to reglue joints, legs, sides, etc? I don't even know where or how to begin.🤷♀️
Really like this! Lots of hard work and it looks amazing! You do still need some additional practice time on the paper airplanes, but you will get there! 😊 💖💖💖
It looks beautiful! If I were to do anything at all differently, I might’ve used a slightly lighter gel stain. But I understand you used what you already had on hand.
I love these old pieces, have one myself and I just couldn't bring myself to paint it. It is a personal preference but I just don't like painted pieces. Somewhere down the road we will see folks restoring and stripping paint.
Interesting looking piece. It has a very distinct style and the two tone paint job works well on it. I felt a little doubtful halfway through the video, but ended up liking the result. I would probably paint the silver hardware in a dark bronze, though - they look a little too bright and shiny, imo. But hey, that's something the new owners can easily do themselves.
You gotta put plastic wrap over the stripper and IT WORKS WONDERS plus then you'll only have to do it once . I learned that from another refurbish video too
Nice tip! But I did only strip once on this piece, I always use steel wool and mineral spirits and I recommend everyone use it to remove the sticky residue before moving on!
BOnsoir, great flip! I have to do something similar to this because my dog ate the legs... yup he ate my antiques... looks great I would of left the door in wood.... just my preference that is all. TFS. Christine
Super nice piece. Great video. As much as I love silver (so much!), I think I may have opted for a more muted tone to blend a little more. It still looks great though. I just love antique furniture.
I love the lines of the piece. It turned out nicely. I would have left the two side doors stained though. I would have chosen a nice antique gold for the hardware. That being said, you did a lovely job, and thanks for the tips on the water stains!
Laura I agree the doors would have looked better stained and either black or bronze hardware would have been more like the original hardware. The design on the doors would look good painted black maybe?
@@laurathompson1913 thanks!! My grandmother had a sideboard like this but her doors were not that ornate. The legs were exactly the same as this one. Wish I had it but its still in the family at least
These pieces are just gorgeous I think in the before & afters & some sell for 3K to 3.5K. They’re very good turnovers even if you’ve paid $150 to purchase it. I thought what you did was good & a more modern improvement than before. If it were me I’d probably left the top, legs & the design on the little door fronts the same colors but lighter including the strip between the drawers & that longer wood piece on the top drawer. The reason why being these are the prettiest parts on this piece & a lighter vrs. darker color pulls them out & forward where a darker color hides & pushes the pretty parts away. You want to highlight those pieces bc they’re focal points on the piece & will probably make them sell better. The rest of it I just wouldn’t use black but there’s a lot of other wonderful colors you could use. Blues, greens, corals or other colors I’ve seen used that are beautiful. I’d of kept the inside the same color as the top, legs & door fronts. I wouldn’t of used silver for the handles but a more golden color. When I saw all the cites on refinishing furniture I started saving videos on some of the ones I liked & I saved many on these buffets. If I were doing one of these I refer to one of those vids to help me decide on the right color until I developed a feel for what I thought would be the best. You still did a beautiful job & I think a lot of men would of painted it black.
really liked the dual paint/bare wood look - it would have been nice if the doors perhaps for example had the inner design panels brought out in bare wood for contrast and more interest
What color stain did you use? I Loved the piece - great job & so beautiful- my opinion soft golden hardware would have been a better choice , but I’m partial, anyway , great job 👏🏼
What do you recommend for those not refinishing (can't take on the project right now) but want to clean up the piece & protect it until a possible future refinishing project?
You should really use chemical grade gloves and have good ventilation using stripper, that shit is very bad for your health. And use lacquer thinner to remove anything the stripper doesn't get with the steel wool. Then you need to use vinegar to neutralize the stripper, otherwise your finish will possibly fisheye or chip later down the road.
Great work! Thanks for the video. Can I use this stripper for a Queen Ann (Cherry) Dining Table with inlays or should I stick with sanding in case stripper loosens inlay glue? Thanks
It's a beautiful piece! I would have painted the drawer fronts black and used a muted gold on the hardware. The silver does not look good with the warm oak stain. The gel stain looks great too! 👍Also remember to wear gloves when working with stripper and clean up. Nice to see you wear an appropriate respirator mask.❣
Didn’t like the two drawers stained. I would of painted it all black. Should of used gold for the drawer pulls to flow with the warm brown. Otherwise u did a good job.
It needs to be all black. With gold tones handles to make the warm legs blend. Black flat, wax everything for a more professional look. See Kacha. Still this looks good.
You ruined it by painting it black but if that's what you like but antiques are to show off the natural Beauty of real wood they don't make furniture anymore out of real wood I am very natural wood grain showing .u did good but not my color natural wood on antiques is it .
Not sure I would teach beginners to use the acid in small areas I use it over the whole top. It can go wrong causing the opposite effect with those spots becoming too light. However it's a beautiful piece.
What a beautiful piece of furniture for your creative skills. I enjoyed the process and I love the stunning outcome! You are very talented sir and this piece will make some one very happy indeed😊👍💕
Great auction find! I think a lighter colored stain would have provided for more contrast would have the doors and drawers stained and and used the black pain on door raised areas.
Does it loose any value refinishing this type of buffet or "sideboard". I inherited my grandmothers piece that's similar to this, mine has a mirror over the top that can come off. My Mom and me and my siblings grew up with it in our living room and it's been very well loved and used, missing chips here n there on the drawer fronts and has missed matching knobs too, but the finish is nearly all scratched off tons of water marks on top, but overall it acually doesn't look too bad. But I figured i could probably make it look a lot nicer if I just put a new stain on it. I believe it's oak so ide stick with that color type stain, a darker oak. Even though this piece will never be sold and will keep being passed down, I was wondering if me refinishing it would cause it to loose value at all?
A piece typically needs to be a famous antique name or extremely old to be valued high. Most pieces are not and refinishing them will not lower the value. The best way to know for sure is to find any markings to identify the piece and determine if it is an antique, if so you could find the piece online and see if it is valuable. If you have no idea, post a picture on a forum, furniture page, or reddit for answers from experts.
Beautiful Jacobean sideboard. I have a similar one, along with the matching extendable dining room table and six chairs. I'm just missing the cupboard that goes with the set. Mine needs to be oiled and waxed, or whatever...not really sure of what to do with the pieces but I know i dont want to paint them. I just wish they were lighter in color because they really darken the room. Mine are walnut and oak and stained very dark.
I don’t like it. I swear I’m not trying to be mean. I just don’t like the two toned vibe. It made the item look even older to me. However the work was perfect. The finish itself is beautiful. I’m not saying this to discredit your craft. I’m just speaking to you as if I was in your store or website, this two tone look wouldn’t catch my eye. Like the two black squares then the brown center just feels all over the place. New Subbie by the way. Can’t wait to see see more of your projects.😊
Over all good job. The stain is a little too dark. But i think it could hav had more pop if you painted the strip between the drawers. Its a small thing but tou would be surprised the impact that it would have. When i first saw the finished product my initial thought was something is missing. Then i read through the comments and another commenter said it and i knew immediately that was it! Just my 2cents
I love this it turned out very beautiful. You asked us to comment what we would do differently. There is honestly only two things I’d personally change & it’s just a personal preference. I would of painted in between the drawers black. And I would of used a nice warm or vintage gold for the hardware. And that’s it. But the way you done yours is still perfect 👍
Wow!Seconds before this video, got a marketplace alert for this exact same piece...free. I would love to get it,but wasn't sure if I could do it justice. You make it look so easy.love your channel.
You asked: it has a cluttered look; brown, to black, to silver. The base has no uniformity. Your technique is really good but the design styling on this is a miss for me.
Great job!! Just a tip that I just found out. Rather thank taping up the legs before painting, you can you use tin foil/Reynolds Wrap! You just tear off a strip & mold it around - easy peasy!! Thanks!
I love the two tone black and wood combo. I would have liked to see the door details pop a bit more. I feel like they got a little lost. The magnetic catches were a great finishing touch.
Don't like the silver hardware, think brass or antique gold would look better. The silver is to bright and takes away the whole look of the item. Love it otherwise.
Why not keep the integrity and just restore as it was? Hate seeing the butchering of old pieces with this modern two toned colored jobs. I’m partial to antiques because I think their beauty is in that integrity. Leave it to Target to make pieces this. Just not my taste I guess.
