I've watched a number of your videos, tried to figure out what I liked about them and just today it dawned on me. First, You don't waste the viewers time with unnecessary talking. You are direct and to the point. Second is your editing style. I like the way you cut. Well done! But that brings me to a question: I have a client asking to have their large melamine walk-in closet painted. I told her I wouldn't do it due to durability concerns but your video has me second guessing. What are your thoughts on that? Painting melamine cabs for a flip is one thing but a closet? I would use Renner 2k products.

question : I removed the melamine from the cabinet door and used Primre and BEHER paint for kitchen cabinet, it's been now 10 day and i can scratch it very easily, do I need to apply coating?

We use 2 component water based polyurethane. We use a lot of different brands, Sirca, Renner, envirolak, Evo, Cic, ICA, and a few other ones

Say if 1 cabinet was peeling would you strip all the cabinets back to bare wood?
@KonstantinUdalov
@KonstantinUdalov 2 года назад
Peeling - is it white plasticky thermofoil ? Than I’d probably find a company that does thermofoil in your area and get that door re done

Great video, thanks. Gives me hope for the beat up cabinets in my kitchen. Lost my job right before moving in so a full renovation will have to wait. A couple of questions. @5:05 You mentioned that you applied a protective film when talking about the cabinet doors. Can you share the details of what exactly this is? Do you consider this a necessary step, and do you apply the same protective film inside the cabinets as well? Thanks!
@KonstantinUdalov
@KonstantinUdalov 3 года назад
Yes. It isolates the unknown crap we might have in the exciting finish. It’s one of the following: vinyl sealer, 2 component polyurethane isolator. (All solvent based) there’s an option in water based formulation. - check out Eric Reason Video on Cic true 2k primer.

Hi.. great video. One comment, actually a concern if I may. You mentioned using 80 grit abrasive to sand the melamine. Did you really use 80 grit? I mean an 80 grit abrasive, regardless of the brand, is very very rough, with deep scratch pattern that a vinyl sealer, again regardless of the brand, wouldn’t level the substrate. In my opinion, a 150/180 grit would just do the job levelling the melamine, create a very acceptable scratch pattern that’ll be easily levelled with low-solid vinyl sealer. Please share and once again thx for posting such an educational video
@KonstantinUdalov
@KonstantinUdalov 2 года назад
Hey Ron, thanks for the comment, 80 greed is good for getting that teeth into the melamine itself, 150 or 180 doesn’t really get much into the melamine, because that melamine is really really tough, 120 is good too if you’re a little worried about the scratches, 100 is good as well but I found at 80 works the best, not worth going lower but I can definitely get really good at using with the 80 grit, please don’t get me wrong I’m not using anything like that after I put my vinyl sealer on, the vinyl sealer should only be scuffed send it with 280 or 320

I’ve used it and I have several of them collecting dust 😊 for the production shop - speed is everything. That’s why most of our flat stuff we hose down with airless

So you're not pealing off the melamine film, rather you leave it and sand the film? Definitely easier but it seems like most others are pealing off the thin melamine film and working with the MDF material underneath which is very clean a more durable surface, ensuring a better lasting bond. Your way suggests that we sand and work with a surface covered in a plastic film. I wonder if you're working with something different.
@KonstantinUdalov
@KonstantinUdalov 2 года назад
flat surface of melamine - rarely peels - the bond is insana.. edges however is a subject for a careful inspection - when i see it's starting to peel - i peel it off and clean sand fill with putty. but in a situation when you have a little budget - it's way better to get new mdf doors . That's my prospective on it =)

Also using hvlp titan 115 but it doesn’t work well with 2k. I have to reduce it abound 15% to have nice finish especially when adding hardener. I heard airless work great with 2k poly

Why wash down then sand after? Doesn’t make sense to me..can someone explain please?
@KonstantinUdalov
@KonstantinUdalov 2 года назад
It’s easy 🙃☺️ if you don’t wash - the oil and grease will stay . Sanding doesn’t help with removing oils - if you sand then wash - all the oils and fat will get pushed and spread all over the place with the abrasives. So the sequence is pretty straightforward - clean(degrease) then sand - blow off dust - spray ✅👍👌☺️

How do you handle cabinets where the melamine is peeling off?
@KonstantinUdalov
@KonstantinUdalov 3 года назад
if it's the edgeband - we either glue it back on, or tear it off and sand fill with wood filler sand, prime paint, or if it's everywhere on the cabinets (panes, doors etc) - replace cabinets
