A good leveling and maintenance of the frets is very important for all kinds of guitars and string instruments. It affects how comfortable they are to play, how much buzzing or unwanted noise they make and, consequently, how the instrument sounds.
In this video you can see me changing the frets of a Japanese Hondo electric guitar. Even though it’s a Les Paul-type guitar, it has a screw-on neck, making my job so much easier!

I'm in a bad spot: I bought a cheap Squier Affinity Tele so I could practice things like re-fretting and it's so cheap...if it goes wrong it's not a big issue. Only problem is, the thing is such a good guitar, it became my No.1 and I can't bring myself to refret it in case I balls it up.

Just bought a old Peavey Raptor for £15.00 for the same reason. It's set up really well, plays really well, just can't bring myself to start pulling it apart!

Lot of comments on how difficult this is, but I refretted two acoustics that were completely unplayable due to severely worn frets, and it's not that bad. Taking the frets out is easy with a soldering iron and fret puller. You can buy pre-cut frets. Radius doesn't have to be perfect because they'll conform to your neck radius when you install them. Pound them in gently with small mallet/hammer. Get a straight piece of wood or a leveler and sand the frets until level. Done. If you don't know how to set a guitar up, a pro can do that, but you'll save big $ by not having to get a fret job.

@@mikechernov7342 It's to heat the fret which melts/loosens the glue holding the fret in. It takes a few minutes on each fret. You should not have to pull with the fret "puller". When the glue is loose the fret puller will just pop the fret out. If you pull the fret out with any force you're guaranteed to damage the fretboard.

If you lightly solder the top of the fret, it really helps with heat transfer. I use a good aluminum 2' level for my straightedge and adhere sandpaper to it with 2 sided tape. As long as you sand more or less in parallel with the edge of the fretboard it works well.

with the exception of the radius tool (the bendy deal) these tools will cost you 50$ on amazon, and with that, you can get pre-radius'd fret wire including sets that are already cut and just need the ends clipped once installed. He also negated to heat up the frets in the event they were glued, which can cause HELLA chipping on the fingerboard

To refret by yourself remember 3 things. 1. be sure to get the fingerboard well radiused after you pull the frets...it's important so you can seat the frets well. 2. Radius the fret wire well to the fingerboard. 3. Use fret wire that's .055 or .057 the first 5 or 6 times. You will take off much more then you have to the first 5 to 10 times you refret, Have extra fret to remove when leveling so you don't get them too low. There are evo frets that have a medium length tang, .055 height and .090 width fret. They work well. If you have big enough slots and don't mind very wide frets use a .057 / .110 for starters.

You can avoid adversely chipping the fingerboard if you heat the frets up with a heating iron prior to trying to pull the frets out. Always heat the frets up first folks.

I have a question please. Is it compulsory to have a fretwire-bending machine to give the frets a radius? Can i not just use a fret press or rubber hammer to replace my guitar frets? Thank you

when you pulled the Frets on that Hondo, did you notice that the fret holes were now too big for the new Frets? And if so, what did you do to fix that without making the new fret too tight?

This may look hard, but really isn't. 1:27 is the only time a specialized tool is shown. The tang is cut back to allow room for the binding. I've been using a dremel, and looking for a better way without spending the money.... If the neck isn't bound, you skip that step.

hola! los trastes se colocan sin pegamento. Una vez colocados, en caso de quedar un poco levantados de la orilla se utiliza pegamento de contacto (kola loka) sólo un poco

The buffing wheel at the end would give it a feel I couldn't get doing it DIY...unless I have a buffing wheel which I don't. I've leveled and recrowned frets, it's a bit tedious for a layman.
