I like that blade design . In a smaller configuration it would make a great neck , or front pocket EDC in kydex .

Tips for drilling through already hardened steel? I have a knife thay was made from a vintage cross cut saw. The apoxy wore out on the scales and they popped off. Id like to do new scales with pins. But cant drill through the steel. I dont have a drill press. Just a standard dewalt drill
@thedarwinexperience5312

Is creating more surface area also why some people drill a ton of holes into the tang of the handle? I've always wondered why they do that. Great video as always. I appreciate you taking the time to teach us young bucks.
@Matthew199771

Yes. That and weight reduction.
@ThePcProGamerz
@ThePcProGamerz 2 года назад
Yes. If you fill your tang with holes it will not only get way lighter and push your balance more forwards for better cutting forced, but also allow additional voids for the epoxy to harden in, essentially creating small internal pins that act as a mechanical fit. Sometimes you dont even need pins at all if its done properly, because its still going to work the same way as hidden pins do. Often times a properly glued handle cant even be removed at all and you have to completely grind them off in the first place.

Holes in the tang is primarily to reduce weight.

No kidding, buffers are the most dangerous tool, I had to play with my paring knife, rustic, no scales, no bolster, I'm a gardener and everyone loves my paring knifes.

I noticed that you were trying to figure out how to pick up the holes on the new grips. Just a suggestion maybe use the existing holes on the tang to locate and bring to final hole size? Just a suggestion I don't want to sound like a harsh Critic, just sharing a tip/trick. Love the work you do Mr. Knight

Lmao The guy is a Grandmaster bladesmith and you're trying to give HIM advice on knife making? That's like trying to tell a Grandmaster chess player how to play chess. XD
@dougmate2378
@dougmate2378 2 года назад
@@ghwplx5 advice on blade smithing absolutely not, picking up existing holes so they are straight and true, yes. Just because one is a grandmaster does not mean they would not be receptive to a different perspective. Clearly you are not a master or experienced in any form of metal working. Nice try.

I appreciate both of your comments and no offense taken from either. The mastersmith who believes he has learned it all...has reached his pinnacle. The mastersmith who knows there is so much more to learn will climb even higher. I'm still climbing.

Buffers are 100% object throwing machines! I was taught to only use the bottom front quarter of the buffing wheel. Amywhere else and it’s going to get ripped from your hands and end up who knows where!

any reason not to peen the pins? (if using metal pins)
@bigryan9447
@bigryan9447 2 года назад
you're likely to crack wood scales if you do that
@gundanium3126
@gundanium3126 2 года назад
@@bigryan9447 not as easly if you bore a slightly larger hole a about a quarter of an inch into the scale so you create a rivit into it. you can still crack the scale if you over peen, but you have the advantage of a mechanical hold. I have seen Five min epoxi give just form dropping a knife but pins that have remained in a sword for houndres of years. PS: Sorry i am not quite sure if i explained that adiquitly or politely as i am just about to go to sleep.
